        들깨 잎 추출물의 항산화 및 신경세포 보호작용

        The leaves of Perilla frutescens Britt. var. japonica Hara (Labiatae) are often used in gourmet food in several Asian countries. Two kinds of perilla cultivars, Namcheon (NC) and Bora (BR), have been respectively developed in Korea by the pure line of 'deulkkae' from the local variety and by the cross of 'deulkkae' and 'chajogi'. The present study evaluated and compared antioxidant and neuroprotective effects of the fractions prepared from the leaves of the two cultivars using cell-free bioassay systems and primary cultured rat cortical cells. We found that the spirit, chloroform, hexane and butanol fractions from NC and BR leaves inhibited lipid peroxidation initiated in rat brain homogenates by $Fe^{2+}$ and L-ascorbic acid. In contrast, only the spirit and butanol fractions from both cultivars exhibited 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity. Among the fractions tested, the butanol fractions from NC and BR leaves exhibited the most potent antioxidant properties, and the butanol fraction from BR was more potent than the NC fraction. In consistence with these findings, the butanol fractions from both cultivars protected primary cultured cortical cells from the oxidative damage induced by $H_2O_2$ or xanthine and xanthine oxidase, with the BR butanol fraction being more active. The butanol fractions from NC and BR did not produce cytotoxicity in our cultures treated for 24 h at the concentrations of up to $100\;{\mu}g/ml$. Taken together, these results indicate that the leaves of the two cultivars of Perilla frutescens exert antioxidant and neuroprotective effects, and that the butanol fraction from BR leaves exhibits the most potent antioxidative neuroprotection among the fractions tested in this study.

        Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) is a slowly growing, benign soft tissue tumor. The tumors occur predominantly on the hands and feet. Although the clinical and histopathologic features are well-defined, only a few reports have described the cytologic appearance of this entity. A 26-year-old woman presented with a gradually developing circumscribed soft tissue mass near the proximal phalanx of her left little finger for one year. Imprint and fine needle aspiration (FNA) smears were obtained from the excisional biopsy specimen. The imprint smears were composed of predominantly singly dispersed bland mononuclear cells and several giant cells. The mononuclear cells were polygonal to round, and they showed a histiocyte-like appearance. Osteoclast-type multinucleated giant cells of various sizes were randomly scattered throughout the smears, and these cells contained 3 to 50 nuclei. Nuclear atypia and pleomorphism were absent in both the single and giant cells. Loose aggregates of hemosiderin-laden macrophages and binuclear stromal cells were also seen. The cytologic features of the FNA smears were similar with those of the imprint, Additionally, the FNA smears contained several clumps of densely collagenous stromal tissue that were seldom noted in previously reported cytologic material. The cytologic features were well-correlated with the concurrent histologic findings and the diagnosis of GCTTS was made. When the clinical and radiologic datas are integrated, the diagnosis of GCTTS can be strongly suggested, based on the pre-operative cytologic specimen.

        Spontaneous Pneumothorax as an Initial Manifestation of Metastatic Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

        Spontaneous pneumothorax occurs in a variety of lung diseases. Primary or metastatic lung cancers are rare, but important causes of pneumothorax. We report here on a case of pulmonary metastasis of thyroid papillary carcinoma that initially presented as spontaneous pneumothorax. A 32-year-old male with no history of thyroid disease underwent wedge resection of the lung due to recurrent pneumothorax. Histologically, the pleura and subpleural lung parenchyma revealed several micronodular lesions and randomly scattered glandular structures with mild cytological atypia. The cells were characterized by their overlapped hypochromatic nuclei with longitudinal grooves and inconspicuous nucleoli. On the additional sections, we found a few intranuclear inclusions and colloid-like material in the follicular tructures. The glandular cells were immunoreactive for thyroglobulin, TTF-1, CK 7 and HMW-CK and they were focally immunoreactive for EMA, but they were negative for S100, chromogranin and CEA. The Ki-67 labelling index was 4%. Neck ultrasonography revealed an ill-defined hypoechoic nodule in the left lobe of the thyroid. The diagnosis of conventional, classical papillary carcinoma was made by both the cytology and the total thyroidectomy specimen. Pathologists should conduct a through histologic examination for the patients with recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax to search for the underlying causes.         A Study on the Characteristics and Application of Emoji in Modern Fashion: A Case Study on the 2011-2017 World's Top Four Women's Collections

        Emoji, small images of facial expressions and objects, is a means of communication in cyberspace. As SNS and messenger apps have become one of the major communication platforms, emoji has been used across all ages around the world and various areas including products, marketing, and social activities. The purpose of this study is to explore emoji clad designs in modern fashion, to analyze its types and characteristics, and to present the need for the development of a wide-range of emoji clad products. According to analysis, among eight categories of emojis used in the 2011-2017 top four world women's collections, posted on Emojipedia, facial expression emojis of Smileys & People are much used in designs. Emoji clad designs, which were mainly unveiled in New York and London collections, have been widely seen in the Milan and Paris collections since 2016. In product and fashion design, emoji is mainly used as decorations for visual effects rather than a communication tool to convey emotions, which is the original purpose of emoji. In the digital era, where individual emotions and diversity are valued, emoji is capable of delivering emotions and adding the value of upgraded premium products by developing customized products reflecting individual characteristics.
