Daerosabi(大老祠碑) is a stone monument inscribed with handwritings bestowed on Song Siyeol (宋時烈) by King Chong-jo(正祖), in 1787, and it is in Yeoju, Kyungkido. Daerosabi seal characters(篆書) on the front is a great work with an unusual type of Daejeon(大篆), which is quite differentfrom Sojeon(小篆) on general stone monuments in the Choseon dynasty, and so it is not that easy to find a similar example like this. There'll be no question to say that a king's own handwritings be used as political symbols. But there were quite a restriction for a king to do literary activities such as calligraphies by the influence of Neo-Confucianism. King Yeong-jo(英祖) and Chong-jo left a lot of handwritings in the latter part of the Choseon dynasty, and it was influenced by King Suk-jong(肅宗), who had a lot of interest in literature. On the basis of strengthened royal authority, Suk-jong left his own paintings and calligraphic works and he also appreciated of other paintings and calligraphic works. And these literary activities by Suk-jong became a background for Chong-jo to leave a great calligraphic work such as Daerosabi. Chong-jo(reigned 1776-1800)'s calligraphy has various types of the classic writing styles; Jeonseo(篆書) ․ Haeseo(楷書) ․ Haengseo(行書) ․ Choseo(草書), Korean (한글). And these various writing styles used on various media such as stone monuments, signboards, letters, documents, and some other calligraphic materials are handed down today. Chong-jo used his handwritings properly for the political necessities of the time. Especially, Chong-jo left a lot of seal characters(篆書), and it is noteworthy. Till now, the calligraphic writing of the seal characters of Daerosabi has been called Hyunchimjeon(懸針篆) or Yuyeopjeon(柳葉篆), because it have the shape of the sharp stroke. But by analyzing the form of the seal characters on the front of Daerosabi, a fact that the first part Si(示) of the word Sa(祠) is Jumoon(籒文) of Seolmoonhaeja(說文解字)is found. It's adjudged that Chong-jo wrote the seal characters on the front of Daerosabi with Jumoon, which was very hard to find a descended example applied the same way till then. It's due to the special situation of the Choseon dynasty, in which the seal characters, a ceremonial handwriting, reflects the academic ideology and political identity, that Chong-jo wrote Daerosabi with Jumoon. By using Heomok(許穆)'s Misujeon(眉叟篆) on the monument of Namin(南人) group, it became means of explaining their ideological and political identity. Chong-jo intended to express the identity of a king with Jumoon. Daerosabi is an expression of honor towards Song Siyeol, who was the core of Noron(老論), the greatest political group at the time of Chong-jo, and also it is figured out that this work is out of Chong-jo's will to embrace Noron with bigger integration.
Vol.34 No.6
Temperature effects on the fluorescence emission spectra of 0.01 M Eu(III) ion with ClO$_4$, Cl$^-$, NO$_3$ were studied. Relative intensity change of hypersensitive band ($^5D0\; {\to}\;^7F_2$) and nonhypersensitive band ($^5D0 \;{\to}\;^7F_1$) was quite remarkable with temperature and ligand. The relative intensity change was interpreted as the change of formation constant and used to calculation the enthalpy change of $Eu(H_2O)_X^{3+}$+ to EuL(H$_2O)_{X-1}^{2+}$ complex. $\Delta{H}$ of $Eu(H_2O)_X^{3+}$ to EuCl(H$_2O)_{X-1}^{2+}$ was roughly 15 kJ/mol and temperature independent, but $\Delta{H}$ of EuNO$_3(H_2O)_{X-1}^{2+}$ was changed with temperature; -11 kJ/mol at 25$^{\circ}C$ and 47 kJ/mol at 250$^{\circ}C$.
Vol.0 No.31
As this is the first study on `Oh-jeong, So-jeong collection`, which are collected by art patrons, Oh-jeong Lee Jong-myeon and his son So-jeong Lee Keun-sang in modern Daegu, it is focused on clarifying the significance of the 320 paintings out of the collection which are housed at Yeungnam University Museum. Lee Jong-myeon and Lee Keun-sang, who were businessmen and educators, formed Seowonsisa and Dongwonsa each and started their literature activities. Their poetry and prose were published as 『Oh-jeong Collection of poems』, 『So-jeong Collection of works』. Lee Jong-myeon and Lee Keun-sang had a very intimate relationships with Seo Byeong-oh, who was a central figure in Daegu painting groups at that time, and with Seo Dong-gyun, who was the best pupil of Seo Byeong-oh. This kind of close relationship served as opportunities for the father and his son to patronize these painting artists. Oh-jeongㆍSo-jeong Collection has 134 works, making 42% of the whole collection, from the local artists who were active in Daegu at that time. And 38% out of that are Seo Byeong-oh, Heo Seop, and Seo Dong-gyun`s works. And painting works by famous painters between 1920s and 30s, such as Kim Ga-jin, Ji Chang-han, Oh Se-chang, Kim Gyu-jin, Yu Chang-whan, Kim Don-hee, are also housed. Lee Jong-myeon and Lee Keun-sang helped the capacity of the local painting groups to become matured and influenced on enhancing the status of Daegu pivoting on regnant paintings. The significances of Oh-jeongㆍSo-jeong Collection are as follows; The contemporaneity, the contemporary artists` works who lived the same time with the collectors are mainly owned. The affinity, in spite of the strong western influence in modern period, as cultured persons in the realm of Chinese literature, their collection was on the basis of concerning the favor of traditional culture. The regional characteristics, the local wealthy persons supported the local artists.
Vol.21 No.1
This thesis is written to look into the aspects of Hangeul seal-engraving art by the year of 1920-1950's. It was possible for Hangeul seal-engraving art to become a new form of art in the 20th century, since Hangeul was used as Korean letters instead of Chinese and Hangeul became a part of calligraphy. The founders of Hangeul calligraphy are Hanseo(翰西) Namgung-eok(南宮檍 1863-1939) and Sahudang(師候堂) Yun Back-young(尹伯榮 1888-1986). By them, Hangeul calligraphy works were appeared in the court style of writing the Korean script, but Chinese seal-engraving has been used. Hangeul seal-engraving was not used by 1930's, and at that time it was the general situation of the times. The first Hangeul seal-engraving was showed in Iljung(㊀中) Kim Chung-hyeon(金忠顯 1921-2006)'s Sijoshipchup(時調十疊) in 1942. Kim Chung-hyeon used Hangeul seal-engraving in his Hangul calligraphy in the early 1940's, which showed his pioneering consciousness, and after that he used several Hangeul seal-engravings in 1940s and 1950s. His Hangeul seals were engraved by his brother Yeocho(如初) Kim Eung-hyeon(金膺顯 1927-2007). Kim Eung-hyeon, calligrapher and seal engraver, is recognized as the most important artist used Hangeul seal engraved by himself. His first Hangeul seal-engraving was identified in his work, Hoongyejasonga(訓戒子孫歌) in 1946, which he made at the age of 20. Hyodereiyeui(효뎨례의) by Kim Eung-hyeon, he recreated the shape of the coins and letter forms in Joseon dynasty as a modern Hangeul art, and it created a model of beautiful Hangeul seal-engraving patterns. He achieved a remarkable work as a pioneer in the field of Hangul seal-engraving art. Galmul(갈물) Lee Chul-kyung(李喆卿 1914-1989) used the separate writing forms of Hangeul seal-engraving in 1947 and her sister, Gokdul(꽃뜰) Lee Mi-kyung(李美卿 1918-) used similar forms of Hangeul seals. These seals seemed like from their father, Yaja(也自) Lee Man-gyu(李萬珪 1889-1978), a Hangeul scholar who wanted his daughters to learn the court style of Hangeul writing and gave them Hangeul pen names. Ohsechang(오세창), Mumu(뮤뮤) by Wichang(葦滄) Oh Se-chang(吳世昌 1864-1953) is Hangeul seal-engraving made before his death in 1953, and '뮤뮤' is hard to understand its meaning. Considering that Oh Se-chang was a translater, fluent in Chinese and also the meaning of the seal letters, I assume that the Chinese pronunciation of 'mùmù(穆穆)' was engraved as '뮤뮤' in Korean letters. The followings are some representatives in the early Hangeul seal-engraving art: Namgung Eok contributed to the pioneering achievement of the court style of writing the Korean script to be realized and disseminated. Lee Chul-kyung and Lee Mi-kyung, the daughters of Lee Man-gyu, a Hangeul scholar, put their efforts to expand the base of the court style of writing the Korean script. Kim Chung-hyeon used Hangeul seal-engraving in his Hangul calligraphy in the early 1940s. Kim Eung-hyeon who was a pioneer in Hangeul seal-engraving art and developed the very first phase of it. Oh Se-chang who left Hangeul seal-engraving as a national pioneer. Oh Se-chang and Kim Eung-hyeon are recognized as seal engravers who engraved Hangeul seal for the first time. Kim Eung-hyeon is recognized significantly as the first person who engraved his own Hangeul seal-engraving and used it on his Hangeul calligraphy works.
Vol.0 No.24
Gimyeong cheolji-hwa was begun by Jang Seung-eop in the late 19th century, and till the beginning of the 20th century it became popular only among limited category of artists in Seoul. On the other hand, Gimyeong cheolji-hwa in Daegu had started to appear in 1910`s and it was painted continuously till 1990`s. The Daegu artists in the world of traditional paintings in modern period mainly painted the four gracious plants and they mostly combined Gimyeong cheolji-hwa. The main artists who conduced to this phenomena are Seokjae Seo Byeong-oh(石齋 徐丙五, 1862~1936), Geungseok Kim Jin-man(肯石 金 鎭萬, 1876~1933), Juknong Seo Dong-gyun(竹농 徐東均, 1903~1978). Seo Byeong-oh introduced Gimyeong cheolji-hwa to Daegu artists` group in traditional ink painting with written meaning style in the 1910`s, and his pupil Kim Jin-man settled down Gimyeong cheolji-hwa among the Daegu artists` group by painting a lot of Gimyeong cheolji-hwa between the 1920`s and the 1930`s. Unlike Seo Byeong-oh`s crude calligraphic handwriting, Kim Jin-man painted Gimyeong cheolji-hwa with descriptive and composing skill of a picture. The two masters of modern Daegu painting and calligraphy work group, Seo Byeong-oh and Kim Jin-man were considered to be the cause of Gimyeong cheolji-hwa being painted continuously among the Daegu traditional artists` group with the following reasons; combining the painting four gracious plants and Gimyeong cheolji-hwa, deploying their Gimyeong cheolji-hwa in traditional ink painting with literary artist`s style, and their paintings, which were distributed in the area, playing a role of a sketch. In addition, the cultural atmosphere of Daegu which they cherish the mood of stationary that Gimyeong cheolji-hwa expresses might have acted as a background and it might have been a role of supplement simplicity of the traditional artists` group who mainly painted the four gracious plants. Seo Dong-gyun, who`s a pupil of Seo Byeong-oh was very active in modern and contemporary times from the 1930`s till the 1970`s, and he had the greatest influence on Gimyeong cheolji-hwa by the traditional Daegu artists` group. Seo Dong-gyun seeking for a new way of expression, he compromised between ink painting technique and coloring technique, and between line drawing and contrast. He also newly established Gimyeong cheolji-hwa as modern art work making use of auspicious subject matter. Artists who painted Gimyeong cheolji-hwa in Daegu were Huijae Hwang Gi-sik(羲齋 黃基式, 1905~1972), Geungnong Im Gi-soon(肯農 任璣淳, 1912~1994), Haejeong Hong Soon-lok(海亭 洪淳鹿, 1916~1983) and so on. Gimyeong cheolji-hwa by the artists` group in Daegu was deployed in literary artist`s style through modern times and it was continuously painted by the four gracious plants` painters in the area till the 1990`s. Gimyeong cheolji-hwa, which was almost disappeared in Seoul in the 1930`s, was continued its vitality throughout the 20th century in Daegu. Gimyeong cheolji-hwa by the Daegu artists` group was expanded and deepened traditional painting in modern times, and so that it has significant meaning to modern and comtemporary art history in Korea, and at the same time it is noted that the regional characteristics is evident.
