Galectin family, endogenous ${\beta}$-galactoside-binding animal lectins, is known for the role in cell differentiation, morphogenesis, apoptosis and tumorigenesis. Galectin-3, one of family member, has been studied for its role in cell differentiation and tumor metastasis, and for its expression on epithelial cells of colon and mast cells but not in brain. Several reports, however, suggest its expression in brain including as a prion binding protein. In this report we explored possibility of galectin-3 expression in brain tissue. With Western blot and RT-PCR with rat brain tissues, we could detect galectin-3 that was not shown by conventional immunohistochemistry. Our results indicated galectin-3 was expressed in brain, and substantiate the previous report on galecin-3 as a prion-related protein in brain.
외국인의 한국어 학습서 연구 -영어권 학습서를 중심으로-

This article investigates the Korean learning materials published by non-native speakers of Korean on Korean language from the late 19th century until the early 20th century. The study focuses on the twelve Korean learning books published for the period of eighty years from 1877 till 1965. An in-depth analysis of the twelve books were conducted on the four different areas and they are the overall contents of the books, the instructional language, the topics and the amount of texts included. It was observed that the twelve books can be classified into two different categories and they are the conversation-focused and the grammar-focused, Books written in the late 19th century were observed to be written for the purpose of conducting a simple everyday conversation with Koreans and the remaining books were observed to be written for the purpose of giving a thorough understanding on the Korean grammar. This research proposes a method which uses a Korean language and Korean culture related class with Korean American Korean learners as the object of the study and the purpose of which is to explore its significance. Though the distribution of Korean language learning Koreans residing abroad are not considered in this study they are an important group which consists of different factors. Unlike other foreign Korean language learners, Korean American Korean learners understand English and the American culture through exchange with family and local organizations while also being exposed to Korean and the Korean culture. This leads to them facing difficulty and confusion when learning Korean due to the sense of foreignness between the two languages and cultures. However the content and methods of Korean education offered by many programs are geared toward foreign language learners and do not fulfill the needs and specialties of Korean American learners. The class uses project work involving Korean language and culture and is appropriate for making use of the language ability and cultural background knowledge that Korean American Korean learners have. Even more so is the significance found in providing the opportunity to actively acquire knowledge of the Korean language. Thus to present a Korean language and culture related education method that considers the demands and specialties of Korean American Korean learners, this research aims to suggest project work as a learnable education method that can make full use of Korean American Korean learners’ abilities.(Korea University)
논문 : 외국인 대학생들의 한국어 유의어에 대한 인식 조사-학술 기본 어휘와의 관계를 중심으로

This study is aimed to seek Korean vocabulary teaching methods with the object of learning purpose by considering the foreign university students` aspects of awareness about basal academic vocabulary among synonyms in elementary Korean vocabulary, and the gap between the understanding degree of the basal academic vocabulary and the elementary vocabulary. To achieve such a purpose, the basal academic vocabulary from the list of synonyms among basic Korean vocabulary was sorted out, and the meaning of each word and its orientation of combination relation were examined. The basal academic vocabulary is rather unfamiliar to the students than the basic Korean words, and the combining vocabulary or the formations were not frequently exposed to the foreign students. Thus, the foreign university students were not able to associate the synonymous relations of the basal academic vocabulary, and they were also not able to recognize the basal academic vocabulary accurately. Furthermore, the students did not know the combination formula featuring the basal academic vocabulary frequently. Based on such consequences, one can anticipate that the basal academic vocabulary would be come into play, hindering the students` comprehension on the academic texts they encounter in class. Therefore, in case of studying Korean vocabulary for the academic purpose prior to the college admission, a list of vocabulary must be provided to the students as well as the instruction regarding the semantic differentials, emphasizing the elementary Korean vocabulary.

There are two aims in this paper. Frist is to present the condition and prospect of Korean vocabulary education for foreigners through traditional teaching approach. Second is to find how to implement various approaches into Korean vocabulary education study. Vocabulary, in recent years, has assumed a more important role in second language acquisition, especially is influenced by the communicative approach, the lexical approach, and the development of corpus-linguistics. There is a need for review of current trends of vocabulary education studies in order to keep abreast of various studies. Six topics are discussed in this article: (1) vocabulary knowledge (2) explicit teaching and implicit learning vocabulary acquisition process and mental lexicon, (3) separating vocabulary, (4) multi-word chunks, (5) corpus, and (6) vocabulary learning strategies. 외국인 학습자 개별 학습을 위한 한국어 어휘의미망 사전 개발 방안

The purpose of this study is to develop Korean semantic network dictionary for foreign students. The result of this study will focus on individual study where learners are able to find the meaning of the vocabulary to understand and practice without the help of the teachers. In many cases, when introduced to new vocabulary learners rely on bilingual dictionaries. Current bilingual dictionaries present diverse meanings and examples; however the fact is the meta-Languages and examples given requires higher level than what the learner`s can comprehend. In order to supplement the bilingual dictionaries shortcoming, the study suggests development of Korean dictionary incorporating semantic network, corpus, and advantages of the bilingual dictionary. Based on WordNet and Kornet, the study utilizes the vocabulary meaning from bilingual dictionary and foreign learner corpus data to develop semantic network dictionary to help leaner`s individual study. This study aims to explore educational gradation of Korean vocabulary meaning particularly for L2 learners. The study focuses on the polysemous verbs with the features related to the semantic expansion based on the L2 learners` intellectual abilities, thereby presents a need to set the standards for educational gradation of Korean vocabulary meaning. The result has a great significance for the Korean vocabulary education on the basis of L2 learners` abilities. The meanings of each polysemy are presented based on the frequency of meaning dictionary and the corpus data is also employed for the purpose of the analysis on the semantic expansion.
