The Shihwa wetland, a newly developed constructed wetland prototype in Korea with an area of approximately 104 ha, was established to improve the water quality severely polluted inflow streams into Lake Shihwa. Because this wetland could play a role as an ecological park in addition to improving the water quality, an ecological impact of the Shihwa constructed wetland has been a national concern. This paper focused on reporting the survey results for fauna among the entire investigation results for 3 years. A total of 129 terrestrial insect species have been observed from August 2001 to June 2002. Among them, Ischnura asiatica (Brauer) (order Odonata), Scymnus species (order Coleoptera) and Orthopteran species were frequently found in the reed bushes. A total of 77 bird species were recorded in a seasonal count, the maximum number of species was 34 in winter and the maximum number of individuals was 4,599 in summer. For the freshwater fish, only 4 species were found in 2000, however in 2001 and 2002, 12 species and 459 individuals were collected at four survey points. Among these 12 species, the dominant species were Mugil cephalus(36%), followed by Carassius auratus (25%) and Rhinogobius brunneus (22%). Meanwhile,12 individuals of Oryzias latipes were observed nearby, mostly downstream of the wetland. For the Herpetofauna at four survey areas, 3 species of amphibians and 3 species of reptiles were recorded. Because of remaining salinity in the soil of the Shiwha constructed wetland, Herpetofauna inflow to the wetland was scanty and mainly inhabited the upstream area. A total of 8 mammal species were recorded. Small-sized species were the striped field mouse, the Ussurian harvest-mouse, the Manchurian reed vole and the brown rat. Middle- and large-sized species were Korean water-deer, Korean raccoon dogs, Korean yellow weasels and feral cats.

This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of bird community and habitat types in Mangyeong River area from Aug. 1999 to Jun. 2000. Paddy field was the most dominant land use type. Water area, mudflat, shrub field, urban area and green house were also dominant land use types in study area. Eighty-eight bird species were recorded during study period. Maximum number of species and individuals were shown as 58 species and 7,084 individuals in Oct. and Jan., respectively. There were low number of diving ducks and clumped pattern of waterfowl distribution of bird community in Mangyeong River area. Dabbling ducks distributed at upper reaches near Samrye Bridge, and plovers and sandpipers at lower reaches near estuary. Those results suggest that creation of pools over one meter water-depth and restoration of paddy field into riparian zone with diverse shrubs are required to increase the bird diversity in the Mangyeong rived.

This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of bird community in Han River area from Oct. 1997 to Jul. 1998. Total 107 bird species were recorded in Han River area. Bird mainly distributed around Kangdong Bridge, Paldang Dam, Yangsuri, Haengju Bridge, Sungsan Bridge, and Bam island. The area between Dongiak Bridge and Youngdong Bridge showed the lowest the density of birds. The dominant birds of Han River area were the dabbling ducks, which were Anas platyrhynchos and A. poecilorhyncha. Diving ducks were distributed in the Dongiak Bridge, Youngdong Bridge, and estuary area. Grebes, Gulls, Herons, and Coots were also dominant bird species. Cormorants, Swans, Sandpipers, and Plovers were minor birds in Han River area. Maintenance and management of various micro-habitats are needed for habitation of bird community in Han River area.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 8 week lactate tolerance and lactate production training with swimming training on swim performance as well as physiological parameter of elite swimmers. Fourteen male college swimmers were maximal swim effort 50m×6 times and 85% intensity swim effort 50m×12 times swim record and physiological variation were measured before(0 week) 4 week and 8 week training. The result showed that 50m swim record was no significantly different among each experiences. but lactate concentration was significantly difference at 0 week vs. 4 week and 0 week vs. 8 week,. respectively. Moreover, there was more related to the change stroke rate and stroke length in lactate tolerance training at 4 week and lactate production training at all experiences. In conclusion, lactate tolerance and production training with swimming training appear to be beneficial to swim performance. Decrease in lactate concentration with increase swimming velocity possibly contribute to improvement of swim performance for stroke efficiency, development of anaerobic capacity in elite swimmers.
