Identification of 2-methylbutyric Acid as a Nematicidal Metabolite, and Biocontrol and Biofertilization Potentials of Bacillus pumilus L1

The present study described the isolation of 2-methylbutyric acid (2-MBA) produced from Bacillus pumilus L1, to subsequently investigate its nematicidal activity for the control of the root-knot nematode. The results showed that 2-MBA could be purified by chromatographic techniques and was identified using nuclear magnetic resonance and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Crude extract and partially purified compounds had a significant effect on the inhibition of egg hatchability and second-stage juvenile (J2) mortality. A dose-dependent effect of 2-MBA was observed for J2 mortality and egg hatchability. Egg hatchability was 69.2%, 59.9%, 32.7%, and 0.0% at 125, 250, 500, and 1000 μg mL-1 of 2-MBA after 4 d of incubation, respectively. Meanwhile, J2 mortality was in the range of 24.4%-100.0% after 2 d of incubation, depending on the concentrations of 2-MBA used. A pot experiment also demonstrated that treatment of B. pumilus L1 culture caused a significant reduction in the number of galls, egg masses, and J2 population than that of the tap water (TW) control. However, as the B. pumilus L1 culture concentration was decreased, the efficacy of nematode control by treatment of B. pumilus L1 culture was reduced compared to that of TW. B. pumilus L1 inoculation at different concentrations also promoted cucumber plant growth. Therefore, our study demonstrated the potential of 2-MBA from B. pumilus L1 as a biocontrol agent against the root-knot nematode and a plant growth promoter for cucumber plants.

신문산업진흥 입법 논의를 위한 프랑스 신문지원정책 탐색

Since 2003, our newspaper subsidy system has been influenced by France through its long history and diverse policies. France held the "Print Media National Congress" to provide urgent relief to the newspaper industry facing the 2008 crisis and proposed a policy for the future of newspapers. Some examples of such policies include newspaper distribution support, restructuring of newspaper printing, increase in newspaper advertising expenses, subscription fee for juvenile newspaper subsidies, and tax exemption. French newspaper subsidy policy has attracted great attention to our press and studies of journalism. Since 2009, legislation has been actively enacted in the National Assembly for restructuring of the newspaper industry, joint delivery and joint printing support, subscription for youth subsidies, support for digital infrastructure construction, and tax reduction. However, discussions on legislative initiatives during the 18th and 19th Congress regarding the newspaper industry were not successful due to problems such as overlapping newspaper subsidy that already existed. Our newspaper is still in a serious crisis. Newspaper subsidy systems are also failing due to insufficient funds and inefficiencies in business. We should again focus on French newspaper subsidy policies and newspaper subsidy systems. In the 20th National Assembly, the legislative process for promoting the newspaper industry should be discussed so that funds can be provided for urgent projects such as subsidies for future newspaper readers, newspaper industry restructuring support (joint printing and co-delivery) and digital news production support. 2003년부터 우리의 신문지원제도는 오랜 역사와 다양한 정책을 갖춘 프랑스의 영향을 받아왔다. 프랑스는 2008년 위기에 직면한 신문산업을 긴급 구제하기 위해 ‘인쇄미디어국민회의’를 개최하고 신문의 미래를 위한 정책을 제안했다. 정책제안 중에서 신문유통 지원, 신문인쇄 구조개편, 신문 광고비 증액, 청소년 신문구독료 지원, 조세 감면등이 실행됐다. 프랑스의 신문지원정책은 우리 언론계와 언론학계에 큰 관심을 불러 일으켰다. 2009 년부터 국회에서 신문산업 구조개편, 공동배달과 공동인쇄 지원, 청소년 구독료 지원, 디지털인프라구축 지원, 조세감면 등을 위한 입법이 활발해졌다. 그러나 18대와 19대국회의 신문산업진흥 입법논의는 이미 존재하던 신문지원제도와 중복 등의 문제로 성과를 거두지 못했다. 우리 신문은 여전히 심각한 위기에 있다. 신문지원제도도 부족한 재원과 사업의 비효율성으로 후퇴하고 있다. 다시 프랑스의 신문지원정책과 신문지원제도에 주목해야 할것이다. 미래 독자인 청소년 신문구독료 지원, 신문산업 구조개편 지원(공동인쇄와 공동배달), 디지털뉴스제작 지원과 같은 긴급한 사업을 위한 기금을 마련해서 집중 지원할수 있도록 20대 국회에서도 신문산업 진흥을 위한 입법 논의가 시작돼야 할 것이다.

The presence and absence of stress on penultimate light syllables is one of the most recalcitrant problems to deal with in English stress assignment. Previous proposals have suggested lexicon division and different rankings in the subdivision(Pater, 1994; Kager, 1989; among others) or double consonant moraicity and low vowel mora generation along with no neutralization convention(cf. Rice, 1996). Still, light penult stress remains partly unexplained. This paper reviews these previous proposals, pointing out problems in the analyses and views the penult stress from a different angle with two main constraints, Align-PrWd and NonHead(ə). The ranking, NonHead(ə) » Align-PrWd, accounts for the position of a light penult syllable in a foot, explaining its variability in stress

OT-CC and English Opacity in Flapping

McCarthy’s (2006) OT-CC incorporates derivational effects in Optimality Theory in the form of faithfulness violation recorded in candidate chains. These chains are subject to the evaluation by precedence constraints, which checks upon the order of violation. This paper applies the proposed OT-CC in analyzing both overapplication and underapplication opacities involving flapping. In General American English, Flapping interacts with Vowel Lengthening. Vowels are long before a flap that comes from /d/. But they remain short before a flap derived from underlying /t/: a case of underapplication. In Canadian English, Flapping interacts with Raising. Diphthongs are raised only before a voiceless consonant. But we find raised diphthongs before a flap showing the effect of typical overapplication. It is shown that both types of opacity can be consistently analyzed within the OT-CC framework. The proposal can obviate controversial proposals such as Local Constraint Conjunction or Sympathy Theory.

시네 우수(Šine-Usu) 비문의 남쪽 면 제3행에 있는 bIdgẄčIr에 관하여

The Šine-Usu Inscription is the most voluminous one with 50 lines among the Uighur inscriptions. Like Tes (750) and Tariat (752-753) inscriptions, Šine-Usu also was erected in 759 in honor of Moyun Čor (磨延啜 Mòyánchuò), the second kaghan of the Uighur Kaghanate (r. 747-759). It is still on the spot in two pieces. Most parts of the sentences of the Šine-Usu Inscription are now well understood. However, bIdgẄčIr in the 3rd line on the south side has been differently interpreted by the researchers. All of the readings hitherto are problematic. The author would like to regard the letter group RiCOGDiB bIdgẄčIr as a spelling error for RiCOGiDB bdIgẄčIr and suggests to read it as äbdigüči är ‘soldier who recruits/drafts soldier’ (< äbdi- ‘to gather, to pick up’ + -güči ‘participle suffix’). There are at least three examples of spelling error related to the position of the letter i I in the inscriptions. The sentences in question can be read as beš yegirmikä … ... taygan költä teriltim. äbdigüči är anta ï<d>t[ïm. är k]älti “On the 15th (of the month) …… we (lit. I) gathered at the Lake of Taygan. I sent the recruiting soldiers from there. [The soldiers] came”.
