북경대학(北京大學) 진덕회(進德會)와 5 · 4 신도덕(新道德)의 건설

20세기 초, 당시 북경대학 교장이었던 차이위안페이(蔡元培)는 풍기(風氣)를 개량하고자 북경대학 진덕회를 발기하고, “도박금지, 성매매금지, 축첩금지” 등 8개항의 회원 개인의 자발적인 도덕적 약속을 요구하는 계율을 제출했다. 8항의 요구는 중국과 서방도덕관념의 조화를 주장하는 것으로, 중국전통의 유․불․도의 수신관념의 기초 위에 서방의 민주, 평등 등의 사상관념을 흡수하여 융합한 것이었다. 중국의 신도덕윤리체계를 구축하기 위한 노력이었으며, 신문화운동 선구자들의 ‘도덕구국(道德救國)’ 이상의 실천이기도 했다. 당시의 특수한 문화배경 하에서 대체될 수 없는 가치와 의의를 지닌 것으로, 5 · 4운동 발생을 위한 견실한 여론의 기초를 놓는 것이었다. 중국과 서방의 조화를 주장하는 북경대학 진덕회의 윤리도덕관의 의의는 매우 컸고, 영향력 또한 심원했다. 진덕회의 윤리관은 근대중국이 냉정하게 전통윤리도덕을 검토하고 분석한 산물이다. 단순히 전통수신관념을 계승했을 뿐만 아니라 동시에 서방의 자유 평등의 현대적 윤리를 받아들였다. In early 20th century, Chai Yuanpei, the principal of Peking University, to reform morals, founds Jindehui and propose eight mandatory rules for members of the society : the prohibition of gambling, prostitution and keeping concubines etc. As a result of harmonizing between Chinese morals and ones from the West, eight rules are adoption of western ideas such as democracy and equality to the fundamental self-cultivating disciplines from traditional Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. As pioneers of new culture movement, Jindehui and their eight rules are the seeking for new moral system of China and practicing the idea of Moral Patriotism. They are representative cultural reformation and due to their effort, public opinions are solidified for the advancement of 5 · 4 movement. Jindehui’s effort of harmonizing different morals from China and the West is fundamental and influential since it is the result from modern Chinese intellects’ critical assessment for traditional morals and ethics. Hence, it is not only the succession of traditional self-cultivating disciplines but the adaptation of modern western ideas, democracy and equality.
