Lucy’s Attempts to Emancipate from Patriarchal Oppression in Villette

Vol.29 No.3

Unearthing and restoring the female voice in a patriarchal discourse is a pivotal task in feminist studies. Charlotte Brontë is one female writer who attempts this through her writing. Through Lucy Snowe’s independence in Villette, Brontë attempts to accomplish female autonomy from male-dominated society. Lucy is exposed to patriarchal ideology which oppresses both her gender and sexual desire, and this ideology is represented by the school, religion and culture of the arts. The society that Lucy belongs to is controlled a monitored through Foucault’s Panopticon. In addition, two representatives of the men in the novel, Dr. John and M. Paul endeavor to spy on Lucy in order to imprison Lucy in the concept of Panopticon. Yet, Brontë depicts Lucy’s subversive attitude which attempts to transcend the surveillance of Patriarchal ideology. In this paper, I map out how Brontë illustrates female autonomy through Lucy’s independence from patriarchal ideology. Lucy undermines gendered suppression through her subversive attitudes, and seeks her realistic and ideal love-bond with M. Paul, in order to emancipate herself from sexual oppression.

'No, not yet,' and the sky said, 'No, not there': Representation of Orientalism in A Passage to India

Vol.31 No.3

This study explores that as an accomplice of British colonialism, Forster fails to fully comprehend India and her people because of his Orientalism. This article also examines the colonialists' perspectives such as Adela, Mrs. Moore, and Fielding, who attempt to build friendships between the different races, as well as colonial implications through the descriptions of Aziz, Hamidulla and Indian landscapes. In A Passage to India, Forster deals with the issue of the friendship between the British and the Indian, but withdraws his narratives by employing mysterious and abstract descriptions about India because of his status to hardly escape from political ideology.

Post-Colonial Aspects in Jamaica Kincaid’s Annie John

Vol.48 No.-

The purpose of this study is to understand the voice and identity of an Antiguan girl in the colonized context by exploring subversion and undermining colonial discourse. Gayatri Spivak points out that there is no space from where the subaltern subject can speak because the brown woman is oppressed by both colonizers and the colonized. In this regard, Annie John, written by Caribbean author Jamaica Kincaid, plays a pivot role in restoring and bolstering the voices of oppressed women’. The protagonist, Annie, recognizes and confirms her identity by establishing independence from her mother, who adheres to colonial order, and by standing in opposition to the European ideology constructed through the years on Antiguan island. Kincaid articulates anti-colonial struggles by debasing colonial heteronormativity and continuously subverts the colonial system by imposing Annie’s rejuvenation through Obeah that is the Caribbean traditional healing method.

Analyses of Inter-cultivar Variation for Salinity Tolerance in Six Korean Rapeseed Cultivars

Vol.30 No.4

Salinity stress is one of the most serious factors limiting the productivity of agricultural crops. The aim of this study was to assess inter-cultivar (intraspecific) variation for salinity tolerance in six Korean rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) cultivars at the seedling stage. The effect of three different salinity stress levels (EC 4, 8, and 16 dS・m-1) on seedlings of six cultivars was investigated through leaf size, leaf dry weight, and leaf chlorosis. At the highest salinity level (16 dS・m-1), the mean decrease of leaf dry weight in ‘Sunmang’,‘Tammi’, ‘Tamla’, ‘Naehan’, ‘Youngsan’, and ‘Halla’ was about 56.2, 56.9, 78.4, 79.3, 77.4, and 80.9%,respectively. ‘Tammi’ and ‘Sunmang’ showed much less reduction in leaf dry weight than all the other cultivars. In addition, diluted seawater treatments increased the occurrence of leaf chlorosis in six cultivars. At EC 8 and 16 dS・m-1, ‘Naehan’, ‘Youngsan’, and ‘Halla’ showed a higher level of leaf chlorosis than ‘Tammi’‘Sunmang’, and ‘Tamla’. On the basis of these results, six cultivars were placed into salinity-tolerant and sensitive groups. ‘Tammi’ and ‘Sunmang’ were the salinity-tolerant cultivars, while ‘Naehan’, ‘Halla’, ‘Youngsan’,and ‘Tamla’ were the salinity-sensitive cultivars. ‘Tammi’ and ‘Naehan’ rated as the most tolerant and most sensitive cultivar, respectively. To further analyze protein expression profiles in ‘Tammi’ and ‘Naehan’, 2-D proteomic analysis was performed using the plants grown under diluted seawater treatments. We identified eight differentially displayed proteins that participate in photosynthesis, carbon assimilation, starch and sucrose metabolism, amino acid metabolism, cold and oxidative stress, and calcium signaling. The differential protein expressions in ‘Tammi’ and ‘Naehan’ are likely to correlate with the differential growth responses of both cultivars to salinity stress. These data suggest that ‘Tammi’ is better adapted to salinity stressed environments than 'Naehan'.

Impact of Home-Based Exercise Training with Wireless Monitoring on Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

2013 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.28 No.4

Recent studies have suggested a favorable effect of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on patients with cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of home-based exercise training with wireless monitoring on acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A total of 55 ACS patients undergoing PCI were randomly divided into home based exercise training with wireless monitoring cardiac rehabilitation (CR, n = 26) and usual care (UC, n = 29). Exercise capacity and quality of life (QOL) were evaluated at baseline and after 12 weeks. Change of metabolic equivalent of the tasks, maximal exercise time and QOL were significantly increased (+2.47 vs +1.43, P = 0.021; +169.68 vs +88.31 sec, P = 0.012; and +4.81 vs +0.89, P = 0.022, respectively), and the change of submaximal rate pressure product, and of submaximal rate of perceived exertion were significantly decreased (-28.24 vs -16.21,P = 0.013; and -1.92 vs -1.62, P = 0.018, respectively) in the CR group compared to the UC group after 12 weeks. CR using home-based exercise training with wireless monitoring led to improvement of exercise capacity and QOL relative to conventional care in ACS patients undergoing PCI. Our findings suggest that early scheduled CR may be considered in ACS patients undergoing PCI.

Vol.0 No.46

In this essay, I have focused on the role played by one of the protagonists, Mitsuko Naruse, in Shusaku Endo’s novel Deep River (Fukai Kawa). Deep River traces the journey of a group of Japanese tourists on a tour to India. Mitsuko’s sense of self-transformation and improvement through the journey to India is unique among the female protagonists in Endo’s work. Her internal transformation becomes manifest during her physical journey in India, and I have examined what Mitsuko is given in the three periods of her internal journey: the preparatory period, the transitional period and materiality period. In the final analysis, Endo’s obsessiveness with maternal affection has provided Mitsuko with a maternal role, surrounding the universe with her affection, superbly realized through the situation of the journey to India.

Vol.11 No.2

Blood is essential in modern medical services. This study is aimed at providing an assessment of present situation of blood supply in Korea. There were 116 blood banks registered as of September, 1974. This study used two sets of data. The first is available information reported to the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs by the blood banks. The second set of data was collected from a random sample of 6.159 persons among those who donated blood at six blood banks in Seoul and one blood bank in Pusan during July 1-August 31, 1974. Out of them, voluntary donors were 2,959 and compensatory donors 3,200. Major findings obtained from the study are presented below. 1. The blood supply was made mainly by compensatory donors and blood banks attached to private clinics or hospitals. 2. About 30% of blood supply was collected at the blood banks located in Seoul. 3. Blood supply was largest in Summer. 4. The majority of compensatory donors were male. Most of them had donated blood much more frequently than the maximum frequency defined by the law (4 times a year). 5. About 17% of compensatory donors had hypohemoglobinemia, more than 6% were positive in HAA Test, and more than 5% were VDRL positive. 6. More than 60% of voluntary donors were under the age of 20. 7. Thc above findings suggested several approaches to the improvement of blood supply situation in Korea. First blood supply by voluntary donation should be increased. Secondly, appropriate measures should be taken to enable blood banks to separate blood into at least three primary components, plasma, packed cells and resuspended red blood cells. Thirdly, spoiled or inadequate blood should be used for the production of blood derivatives. This can be the way of preventing the abuse of blood and the complications of transfusion.

Exploring the Talk in EFL Students’ Peer Feedback: Content, Perspectives, and Desire

Vol.23 No.1

Peer feedback (PF) can be an important component in teaching and learning writing. This study investigated the content of PF and students’ perspectives about PF in two EFL writing classrooms at a Korean university. The data comprise sixty-five students’ written comments and their opinion writing on PF. The findings reveal that students’ comments included mainly ‘statements’ and ‘praises’ with significant high scores. The strengths of PF were students’ ‘knowledge about concepts’ for getting ideas and recognition of their grammatical problems through peers’ work. Regarding weaknesses of PF, students felt that their peers were not qualified to revise the grammatical aspects and tended to distrust their peers’ recommendations. As an ideal type of feedback, students preferred anonymous PF to teacher feedback. These findings show the importance of choosing not only what ways of PF are effective in a given context, but what effect of the selected way might have on the improvement of students’ writing.
