언어적 및 비언어적 문화차이로 인한 의사소통장애에 관한 연구 -한·미간의 문화를 중심으로-

        이상혁 ( Lee Sanghyock ) 대한영어영문학회 2012 영어영문학연구 Vol.38 No.2

Learning a language is learning the cultural norms and values observed by the people who speak the language as their mother tongue. Language learning without understanding cultural differences may cause trouble and breakdowns in communication. We may experience culture shock if we are not well aware of the rules and customs of the country we are visiting even though our ability to speak the language is excellent. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to some of the major factors that cause misunderstandings between interlocutors from different cultural backgrounds. To illustrate more about cultural differences comparisons were made between cultures that share different views on verbal and nonverbal communication norms. Based on the research, it is highly recommended that all levels of education should incorporate cultural competence and awareness courses into the curricula. Also, those organizations dealing with foreign affairs are encouraged to include cultural awareness classes in their personnel training programs.(Keimyung University)

영어명사의 가산성에 의거한 영어문장의 이해 및 재해석 -성경구절을 중심으로-

One of the key linguistic features of English nouns is countability. The countability status of English nouns varies according to a given situational context. In this study, a Korean-English explanation bible was chosen to illustrate how certain English nouns are interpreted and translated under particular contexts and situations. We can notice that, in several cases, there is room for some more in-depth explanation and discussion. It is always a good idea to read both the Korean and the English versions of the Bible. In doing so, readers of the Bible will have a better grasp of the meanings of the Bible verses and will come to know more about the biblical truth. (Keimyung University)

킹제임스(KJV)한영대역성경과 NIV한영성경의 비교를 통한 영어성경구절의 한글번역에 관한 연구 ― 영어 관용어를 중심으로

        이상혁(Sanghyock Lee) 한국번역학회 2024 번역학연구 Vol.25 No.1

Idioms are widely used in movies and dramas as well as in daily conversations. This paper mainly explores idiomatic expressions found in the Bible. We can notice that word by word translation of English idioms into Korean may sound strange. For instance, the expression ‘Break a leg,’ commonly used in English to convey good luck, loses its intended meaning when directly translated into Korean. Research on correct translation or interpretation of English idiomatic expressions contained in Bible verses into Korean is nearly nonexistent. Therefore, an in-depth study on its implementation is required to ensure correct comprehension of both the English and the Korean versions of the Bible. As observed in the illustrations provided in the research paper, a literal translation may fail to capture the essence or significance of the original text when encountering idiomatic expressions in Bible verses. Specifically, the accurate interpretation of English idiomatic expressions holds significant importance in ensuring a thorough comprehension. It falls upon translation specialists to facilitate a clearer understanding for Korean readers, guiding them through the intricacies of the text and ensuring readability as well as faithfulness.
