A variety of investigations have indicated that consumers subjectively perceive a positive relation between price and product quality. And under conditions of perfect information markets will yield a single price for goods of the same quality. This study examines the actual price-quality relations in the Korean market. The data source are the Monthly Consumers by national Council of consumer Protection, the Age of Consumers by Consumer Protection Board, and Consumer Product Quality Information by Industrial Advancement Administration. Spearman's rho correlations of price and quality ranges from - .95 to .97, with a mean of .26. This slightly positive mean correlation indicates that price is not an adequate signal of quality and reinforces the conclusions of ealier work for the United States, Japan and Canada. This study also anlyzes the correlation's change over time, the corrleations grouped by mean price, the rich man's rule', the potential payoffs to consumer search. Some possible explanations for these findings and implications for consumers and consumer educators are presented.
