        Development of indicator for coastal and estuarine eutrophication using morphological charatersitics and tissue N content of eelgrass, Zostera marina

        Since cultural eutrophication has the detrimental effects on estuarine and coastal ecosystems, recognition of early stage of nutrient over-enrichment is critical for effective managements of the ecosystems. Since released nutrients into coastal ecosystems are diluted and dissipated through tidal action and rapid uptakes by marine plants, monitoring of in situ nutrient concentrations may not be useful for detecting early eutrophication on coastal and estuarine ecosystems. To develop an effective indicator of cultural eutrophication using marine plants, tissue N content and area normalized leaf mass of eelgrass, Zostera marina were examined in Kosung Bay and Koje Bay on the south coast of Korea from June 2001 to April 2003. Eelgrass tissue N content exhibited obvious seasonal variations. Leaf N content was highest during winter and early spring and lowest during summer. Eelgrass tissue N content was higher at Kosung Bay site, which has higher sediment organic content, than at Koje Bay site. Area normalized leaf mass showed reverse trend of leaf N content, and consequently, eelgrass leaf N content and leaf mass exhibited strong negative correlation at both study sites. The results of the present study suggested that the ratio of eelgrass leaf N content to area normalized leaf mass can be applied to assess environmental nitrogen conditions on the coastal and estuarine ecosystems.

        Production ecology of the seagrass Zostera marina in Jindong Bay, Korea

        Production dynamics of eelgrass, Zostera marina was examined in Jindong Bay on the south coast of the Korean peninsula. Eelgrass leaf productivities and environmental factors such as underwater photon flux density, water temperature, and nutrient availabilities in the water column and sediments were monitored from March 2002 to December 2003. While water temperature exhibited a distinct seasonal trend, underwater irradiance and nutrient availabilities exhibited high degree of fluctuation, and did not show a seasonal trend throughout the experimental periods. Eelgrass leaf elongation and production rates showed significant seasonal variations. Leaf productivity was highest in May (30.0 mg dry wt sht-1 d-1 or 3.7 g dry wt m-2 d-1) and lowest in November (3.2 mg dry wt sht-1 d-1 or 0.12 g dry wt m-2 d-1). Eelgrass leaf productivities did not show a strong correlation with underwater irradiance or environmental nutrient availabilities. The production rates, however, were positively correlated with water temperature during spring periods, and were correlated negatively at high water temperature exceeded 20C during summer months. While relative growth rates were highest in spring and lowest in high water temperature periods, plastochrone interval was longest during during summer and shortest during spring. These results imply that seasonal growth dynamics of eelgrass, Z. marina was mainly controlled by water temperature.

        Reading through George Herbert's The Temple, one can easily be impressed with the fact that he uses carious forms of poetry. He uses 140 different poetic forms out of 171 pieces in The Temple, but never uses any traditional forms except sonnets. Even in the case of sonnets he writes only six pieces after the fashion of the English sonnet form out of 15 pieces. The others are of the form of his own device in which he sometimes mixes the English form with Italian sestets. He never uses even such a popular form as the ballad metre probably because he prefers rhymed verse to the unrhymed. There are no unrhymed verses in The Temple with the possible exception in the case of his deliberate technical device. Even though he prefers iambic pentameters (more than half of his whole verses are in pentametres) he never uses any blank verse. His chief technique lies in his subtle device of various rhyme schemes as shown, for example, in "Man" in which he uses different rhyme schemes in every stanza but one. He tries to conform his matter or sense with the poetic form in accordance with his various poetic moods and experiences. Not all of his poetic techniques is successful, but his artistic endeavour is not to be disregarded or underestimated. Any practitioners of verse can be greatly profited by the study of Herbert's verse. He is one of the greatest originators of various verse forms of English poetry.

        지각 오디오 부호화기에서의 스펙트럼 에너지 기반 톤 성분 검출 알고리듬

        지각 오디오 부호화기는 신호의 지각적 중복성과 함께 지각에 무관한 성분들을 줄이기 위해 인간의 청각 특성인 마스킹 효과를 이용하여 부호화 과정에서 발생하는 양자화 잡음을 귀에 들리지 않는 수준 이하로 낮춘다. 이때 마스킹 하는 주체인 입력 신호의 특성이 들, 잡음 중 어떤 성분에 가까운지에 따라 주위의 작은 신호들을 마스킹하는 양이 달라지기 때문에 입력 신호의 특성을 알아내는 것은 지각 부호화기의 성능을 좌우하는 중요한 요소이다. 본 논문에서는 낮은 복잡도로 구현 가능한 새로운 톤 성분 검출 알고리듬을 제안하였다. 제안한 알고리듬은 MPEG 심리음향 모델-II 비해 초월함수가 적게 사용되며 사용되는 연산도 단순하기 때문에 낮은 복잡도의 부호화기 구현에 적합하다. 제안한 알고리듬은 다양한 신호들에 대해 성능평가가 수행되었으며, DSP를 사용한 구현 결과 약 3 MIPS 정도로 구현 가능하였다. The goal of perceptual audio coder is to reduce redundancy and irrelevancy of audio signal based on the concept of masking. Several studies on masking effect reveal that the masking threshold varies as a function of the noise-like or tone-like nature of audio signals. Therefore, tonality of audio signal influences significantly the quality and efficiency of perceptual audio coder In this paper, we propose a new effective algorithm for tonality measure using spectrum energy. Since the proposed algorithm consists of a few transcendental functions and simple operations, it has lower complexity than MPEG psychoacoustic model-II. The proposed algorithm was tested with some audio signals, and DSP implementation showed that the proposed algorithm could be implemented with 3 MIPS. These results illustrate the efficiency of proposed algorithm in both performance and complexity.
