This paper is based on the view that hangeul is itself one of the most significant culture codes of Korea. According to Hunminjeongeum, hangeul is created upon the traditional Korean cultural ideas such as Yin-Yang and Five Elements code. Thus, for more effective learning of hangeul and Korean traditional culture, especially for the students from western cultures, first thing would be not so much to teach them technical or theoretical features of hangeul as to let them acquainted with Korean culture codes explicated in Hunminjeongeum. This can contribute to their more effectively overcoming the language ‘interference’ coming from the difference between their native language and hangeul. Moreover, letting the learners exposed to living cultural features which reflect hangeul’s culture codes would help them see hangeul not just as a symbolic sign system but as one of the most effective living communication tools through which they can appreciate not only hangeul but also diverse traditional Korean cultures.

Sindbad the Sailor, Aladdin with his Magic Lamp, and Ali-Baba are literary-artistic figures who still live on forcefully in our imagination. Though we've forgotten the details of The 1001 Nights, we still remember its framing story and unforgettable figures, Scheherazade and King Shahryar. John Barth's tenth novel, The Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor brings them back to the world of American twentieth century. Simon William Behler, the modern day American New journalism writer, finds himself in the world of Sindbad the Sailor. Scheherazade again appears as the fascinating story-teller who delivers the story of Behler and Sindbad to his audience. However, this time she delivers this story not to King Shahryar but to the personified Death to join him to the world beyond. To make things complicated, we find another frame tale in which Behler, the fictional character in the inside story, delivers Scheherazade's story to his young female doctor in a twentieth-century hospital. Instead of going back again to the world of Arabian nights, Barth employed the familiar scene against itself and created the world in which the world of past and present and of fact and fiction were commingled. We feel disconcerted at the frame structure in which the inside story's character shows up as the narrator in the outside story. The Last Voyage is a postmodernist frame tale in which traditional frame structure becomes upside down and in which he makes fun of the traditional boundaries of fact and fiction. Both the arabesque pattern and The Arabian Nights which belong to the Oriental Tradition use frame structure as its backbone. Barth finds frame-breaking pattern from the persian carpet which uses arabesque pattern as its basic form and message. Arabesque romance in the German romantic period appropriated arabesque pattern in their fiction and employed frame-breaks not only as its formal experiment but as its main message. It revives in the postmodernist frame tales. Barth argues that Chaos theory, which also foregrounds "framing" as one of its main concerns, shares some common features with the postmodernist frame tale. This paper focus on the interrelationship among Chaos theory, Arabesque design, and the postmodernist frame structure and on how The Last Voyage reflects those features.
