문화적 실제성 면에서 본 초등영어 교과서용 씨디롬 교재의 동영상
유범(Yoo Beom) 영상영어교육학회 2006 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.7 No.2
The purpose of this study is to investigate the cultural authenticity of video clips presented in the CD-ROM titles used for elementary school English classes in Korea. The criteria for authenticity was whether the depicted verbal/nonverbal communication and living customs were authentic from the view of English-speaking North Americans. The scenes found unauthentic were classified into six categories (stress & intonation, expressions, conversation flow, nonverbal language, customs, and other), and the examples of each category were discussed. Some of the unauthentic scenes were those in which depicted verbal/nonverbal communication or living customs were Korean. However, the majority of the unauthentic scenes seemed to be due to the creation of dialogues or the directing of actors/actresses without sufficient consideration of cultural authenticity. Such findings implicate that more attention needs to be given to cultural authenticity when creating dialogues or directing actors and actresses to make video clips. This study also raises an issue regarding how cultural authenticity is to be viewed in this time of a multicultural world.

To achieve this aim, a questionnaire was conducted among 410 elementary teachers in Chungbuk province and its results were compared with those of previous research carried out in the Metropolitan area (Choi & Lim, 2005). The results of this study can be summarized as follows: first, regardless of the areas, the opinions of elementary teachers on the utilization frequency and the usefulness of the English teacher's guide book were above moderate levels with slightly higher value in Chungbuk. Second, the English teachers in Chungbuk highly agreed on the suggestions from the previous studies aimed on the improvement of the guide book. Further implications for effective English education were presented based on the results of the study.

This study investigates when and how middle school students comprehend 10 basic grammatical terms such as subject, verb, tense, person, etc. The research questions are (1) When were the students able to comprehend the terms?; (2) Which was more helpful between their English class at school and their private tutoring or reference books for comprehending the terms?; and (3) what ways of teaching were considered effective/ineffective by the students for learning the terms? A survey was conducted on a total of 702 3rd-year students enrolled in seven middle schools in Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungbuk, and Gwangju, and among them 367 students that stated they comprehended the 10 grammatical terms presented in the survey were selected as the subjects. Their responses were analyzed through SAS to compute both basic descriptive and inferential statistics. Some of the important findings are (1) 40.87% of the subjects comprehended the terms during their 1st year at middle school, while 34.87% did while in elementary school; (2) for 51.23% of the subjects their private tutoring (reference book included) was more helpful than their English class for comprehending the terms; for 37.33% both were equally helpful; and for 11.45%, their English class was more helpful; (3) most subjects considered all of the nine ways of teaching presented in the survey to be effective.

유범(Yoo, Beom) 한국영어교과교육학회 2014 영어교과교육 Vol.13 No.3
The purpose of this study is two-fold. One is to explore middle school students’ experience of learning English vocabulary and grammar to identify problems that cause underachievement in English. The other is to seek insights useful for creating support programs for underachievers in English at middle schools. A qualitative research method was employed for this research, and in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with three sophomore underachievers in English at a school located in a city in the mid-central region. Each interview was recorded, transcribed, and analyzed to identify the information relevant for the research goal. Eleven problems were identified as causes of the subjects’ underachievement. It was found that underachievers need support programs that can help them understand grammar on the one hand, and internalize the vocabulary they learn on the other. It was suggested that the support programs make use of homework assignments and face-to-face meetings.
