In this study, a principle test was conducted on the effect of thermal fatigue for visualizing the deformation caused by thermal stress. After tightening an M8 bolt to a jig consisting of polymer and metal, changes in the tightening performance due to periodic temperature changes were monitored. The measured axial force and loosening torque results were compared to the obtained value using a theoretical model and a torque-axis force relationship model considering bolt design factors and tightening characteristics. The difference between the calculated value and measured value was minimized by optimizing the tightening factor. And, the theoretical model that explains the changes in tightening performance under thermal fatigue was developed based on the equivalent relation between the total deformation by the mechanical load and sum of the deformations. This model can possibly explain variations in the tightening performance due to bolt standards and temperature conditions determining the thermal stress property.

Failure mechanism of the poor contact is analyzed on the basis of used connectors and this poor contact of connectors is reappeared by the new forced fretting wear method. As the result of failure analysis and reappearance, fretting wear and corrosion of the contact interface causes the contact resistance degradation and the poor contact of connectors. The amount of degradation depends on the fretting stroke. Changes in contact resistance of static contacts are likely to be small and gradual, while motions of contact interface may result in larger and discontinuous changes in resistance and voltage. This voltage drop by fretting motions is large enough to cause the distortion of sensor signal and mis-working of electric components.

In this study, the lifetime prediction of fluoroelastomers for oil seals and gaskes for preventing automotive lubricant oil was investigated using accelerated aging test. The accelerated thermal aging test was performed at temperature of 160 175 190 and 200 ℃. Tensile strength and hardness of the fluoroelastomer were analyzed as physical parameters for the accelerated lifetime prediction model. As a result, the hardness was more excellent in variation and tendency compared to the tensile strength, so hardness was applied as a parameter of the accelerated lifetime prediction model. It was confirmed that the hardness gradually increased with the aging time, and the accelerated life prediction model of the fluorine rubber could be expressed by the Arrhenius relationship.

In the 21st century, the automobile industry is making active efforts to reduce vehicle weight for development of low-carbon and eco-friendly cars. If the weight of a five-seater car, which weighs 1,500 kg, is reduced with 10%, fuel efficiency will increase by 2.8 %, and carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide of exhaust will decrease by 4.3 % and 8.8 %, respectively. In the case of electric and hydrogen vehicles, which do not emit carbon dioxide, reducing the weight of the vehicle has become an essential requirement to offset the increase in battery weight. Aluminum and magnesium alloys are used for body parts, and common plastics and engineering plastics replace existing metal parts of engine/transmission components. In the case of parts where metal and plastic are assembled and integrated through bonding or specific intermediaries, other types of failure modes will occur instead of the existing failure modes. Thermal degradation under high temperature, deformation and cracks caused by thermal stress due to difference in thermal expansion coefficient at different material junctions, and cracks resulting from vibration due to changes in resonance frequency must be considered. In this study, in order to visualize the process of deformation caused by thermal stress, a principle test was conducted on the effect of thermal fatigue. After fastening M8 bolt to a jig made of polymer material and metal material, changes in fastening performance (axis force) due to periodic temperature changes were monitored using a load cell. Measured axial force and loosening torque results were compared to calculated value based on a torque-axis force relationship model considering bolt design factors and tightening characteristics and a theoretical model describing changes in axial force. The difference between calculated value of the relationship model and measured value was minimized by optimizing the tightening factor. And, the theoretical model that explains the change in tightening performance in the effect of thermal fatigue was developed based on the total deformation by mechanical load equivalent to the sum of the deformation. The models are able to explain variation of tightening performance in the specific condition of thermal fatigue test and bolt standard.
