This study aimed to identify the level of awareness, self-efficacy, and knowledge of research ethics among nursing graduate students. A descriptive survey design was used. A total of 102 nursing graduate students were recruited from one nursing school in Korea. Data collection instruments were developed based on the core instructional areas of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) from the Office of Research Integrity at the research team’s institution. Participants completed a self-reported questionnaire consisting of questions on research ethics. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics using PASW Statistics 18.0 Window program. Participants (mean age=31 years) consisted of master’s (77.5%) and doctoral (22.5%) level students. Only 25.5% of participants had taken a course in research ethics, and 26.5% of participants had experience conducting research as principle investigators. The level of awareness (mean score 2.91 out of 5) and self-efficacy for good research practice (3.15 out of 5) were moderate. The level of knowledge regarding research ethics was low (10.59 out of 16). The area of lowest awareness was ‘protection of intellectual property and patents,’ followed by ‘justifying authorship’;the area of least knowledge was ‘writing research articles,’ followed by ‘criteria for authorship.’ Statistically significant correlations were found between awareness, self-efficacy, and knowledge of research ethics (all p<0.05). These results support the conclusion that educational programs for enhancing awareness, self-efficacy, and knowledge of research ethics for graduate nursing students are needed in order to help students conduct ethically sound research.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the trend of research on the use of home-based pulmonary rehabilitation. Method: Using Medline and CINAHL search engine, experiemental research, titled as 'home-based pulmonary rehabilitation' and 'chronic lung disease', statistics were collected. The total 29 experimental studies published between 1981 to 2000 were selected and analyzed according to the ATS guidelines. Result: 1) The study samples in research were mostly of men, whose lung function was moderate to severe. 2) The total period of the intervention program varied from 5 to 12 week. The program included excercise intervention and educational intervention. Psychosocial intervention was minimal. 3) The outcome of the home-based pulmonary rehabilitation had been measured mostly by physical aspects. Quality of life and cost were less frequently measured. 4) In terms of effectiveness of the home based pulmonary rehabilitation program, physiologic outcome, such as lung function and hematologic markers, there was more 'no effect' than 'positive effect', whereas there was more 'positive effect' in decreasing dyspnea, improving excercise capacity, and improving quality of life. Conclusion: Based on these findings, future research on home-based pulmonary rehabilitation should be emphasized and provide standardized protocol, including psychosocial intervention, and analyses on cost and quality of life.

Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and evaluate a research ethics course in a graduatelevel educational program in nursing. Methods: This study consisted of three major parts. First, an initial course was developed based on a review of the existing literature regarding research protocols and the ethical issues involved in research. Second, this initial course was delivered to the graduate students in one nursing program and a quasiexperimental study was applied to evaluate the course. Third, based on an analysis of quantitative responses from the participating nursing students, as well as input from a panel of experts, a final research ethics course was developed for this graduate program in nursing. Results: The initial course involved the following six content areas: the concept of research ethics,bioethics and research ethics, research ethics for the protection of human subjects, statistical analyses in research ethics, ethical issues in publishing and intellectual property, and research ethics in nursing. The quantitative research reports showed a significant increase in the nursing students’ perception, self-efficacy, and knowledge regarding research ethics. Further analyses show that graduate nursing students still need structured course work in order to increase their ability to carry out good research. Additionally, a course in research ethics in nursing was designed as a 1-credit, pass/fail official course consisting of the following five content areas: the concept of research ethics, the protection of human subjects in nursing, data management and research ethics, statistical management and research ethics, and publication and research ethics. Conclusion: This study was carried out to develop and evaluate a course in research ethics for a graduate-level educational program for nursing students.
Psychometric Properties of Korean Version of Self-Efficacy of Evidence-Based Practice Scale

Purpose: This study is to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the Self-Efficacy of Evidence-Based Practice (SE-EBP) scale, which was originally developed by Chang and Crowe. The beta-version of the SE-EBP is a modified version of the original SE-EBP, which measures the clinical nurses' confidence in finding, appraising, and implementing evidence into practice. Although the original SE-EBP has been validated, no study has been conducted to validate the Korean version of SE-EBP. Methods: The original scale was translated into Korean through a process of forward and back translation of the original scale. After getting confirmation of the equivalence of the Korean forward translation by the original author, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis of data from 212 clinical nurses were used to test construct validity. Internal consistency was examined using Cronbach a coefficients. For the statistical analysis, STATA version 13.0 software program was used. Results: Exploratory factor analysis of the 28 items revealed three factors with eigenvalues above 1, accounting for 60.2% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis showed good fit of the three-factor structure which was statistically significant (x2 = 718.61, df = 330, p < .01). For internal consistency, Cronbach a coefficient for the total scalewas .95, and itwas greater than .80 for each of the three subscales. Conclusions: The Korean version of SE-EBP scale showed evidence of adequate construct validity and reliability. This study might have contributed to a wider application of the SE-EBP scale, but further studies are needed to provide more evidence on the structure of the scale.
