Waiting for Godot
Vol.11 No.-
The study aims at revealing "the tragic human condition in Waiting for Godot." Its author, Samuel Beckett, contributed to the rise of the Theatre of the Absurd by successfully performing Waiting for Godot in 1953. Godot caused a great sensation since Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author in 1923. Art to beckett is a kind of an Absurd but inescapable imposition. Therefore the world that interests him is not upwards and outwards but inwards and downwards. In this respect this paper analizes the world of Godot and its characters. The world of Godot is based on nothingness bounded by darkness and permeated with mystery. In this world the characters are bored to death and come to face the metaphysical fear. They wait for Godot to escape such a situation but he never appears. Two phenomena of existence are shown through the characters. One is immobility and the other is disintegration. Bechett tries to reveal the fundamental fate of human beings by juxtaposing them. In conclusion it must be said that it would be vain to find any positive or consoling feature in this image of man and world. And yet the tone of the play is not beastly serious nor cynical but filled with a sadness.
A Short view on Harold Pinter and His plays : Harold Pinter
1990 Minerva Vol.- No.24
