A tri-spine horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus (Leach, 1819) was collected from a sandy beach of UdoIsland of Jeju during the full moon tides in November 1997. Three spines on the posterior margin of theopisthosoma were characterized indicating that the specimen was T. tridentatus. This specimen was a femalewith the total length of 49.5 cm and prosoma width of 23.0 cm. Tachypleus tridentatus was the first record fromKorean waters. A brief description and figures of the species were given. This finding indicates that Korea isincluded to the distribution range of the species.

This study examines the lived experiences of Korean immigrant women intermarried to U.S. military personnel and their cultural practices of resistance to prejudice and discrimination that they encounter in everyday life. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in a Korean ethnic church and in its cell group meetings, it explores the ways in which they resist multiple hegemonic forces constantly operating in everyday life. As immigrant women of color with lower socioeconomic backgrounds, they are subject to discrimination and stigmatization. Notwithstanding these conditions of living, they indeed construct strong spiritual identities through the use of religious symbols and discourses. They tend to reconstruct the past by using religious symbols and discourses, which is a means to make their everyday experiences religiously meaningful. They also construct a spiritual hierarchy, which generally coincides with their formal leadership roles and responsibilities in the church, as a means to counteract secular hierarchies categorized on the basis of race, gender, and class. Therefore, participation in church and its cell group meetings not only provides these women with opportunities for active engagement and empowerment, but also cultivates the cultural practices of resistance against discrimination and stigmatization. 이 글은 미군과 결혼하여 미국에 이주한 한인여성들의 일상적이고 실존적인 삶의 경험을 기술하고, 그들이 미국의 주류사회와 한인공동체 안에서 겪는 편견이나 차별에 대항하는 대안적 문화양식을 고찰하고 있다.이 논문은 미 중부에 있는 한 이민교회와 그의 구역모임에 대한 지속적인 참여관찰을 통해서 얻어진 자료를 바탕으로, 미군과 결혼하여 이주한 한인여성들이 일상생활에서 겪는 억압과 차별을 어떻게 대처하고 극복하는 가에 촛점을 두었다.이 여성들은 낮은 사회적 지위의 유색인종 여성 이민자들로서 차별과 편견 속에서 살아왔다. 이러한 생활 여건에도 불구하고, 그들은 종교적인 상징과 담론을 사용하여 강한 영적정체성을 확립해 나간다. 그들은 종교적 상징과 담론을 이용해 그들의 어려웠던 과거를 재해석함으로써 그들의 일상의 경험을 종교적으로 의미 있게 만든다. 그들은 또한 교회 안에서 지도적인 역할을 하고 책임을 맡음으로써 영적인 위계질서의 개념을 만들어 인종, 성, 및 사회계급에 기초를 둔 세속적 위계질서에 대항해 나가는 수단으로 사용한다. 그러므로, 한인교회의 예배와 구역모임에 참여하는 것은 그 여성들이 적극적으로 집중하고 파워를 키울 수 있는 기회를 제공할 뿐만 아니라 차별과 편견에 대항할 수 있는 문화 양식을 배양시킬 수 있다.

Distribution characteristics of freshwater fish in Jeju-do, Korea

In order to examine distribution characteristics of freshwater fish in Jeju-do, freshwater fish were examined at 17 stations including three reservoirs, 13 stations in six streams, and one estuary wetland. A total of 396 fish individuals of seven species in four families were collected at the three reservoir stations and Lepomis macrochirus, an introduced species that disturbs the ecosystem, was the dominant species (71.7%). There were 770 fish individuals of 22 species in 15 families collected from the six streams. The dominant species was Chaenogobius urotaenius (22.6%). A total of 26 fish of four species in three families were found at the Hadori wetland and the dominant species was Tridentiger obscurus. There were five species of fish found for the first time in Jeju-do during this study; Micropterus salmoides, Eleotris sp., Tridentiger brevispinis, Redigobius bikolanus, and Scatophagus argus. In particular, Eleotris sp. of Eleotridae had not so far been recorded in Korea.
