기획논문 : 남명 연구 성과의 회고와 전망-정치 분야에 대한 소고

이 글은 지금까지 교육부분에 있어서 남명학 연구성과를 정리하여 그 동향을 밝혀 앞으로의 남명학 연구의 방향을 정하기 위하여 작성하였다. 여기서 남명학은 남명 조식(1501-1572)과 그의 문인 집단인 남명학파에 대한 연구를 포함한다. 교육부분에 있어서 남명학 연구는 1947년부터 시작되었지만, 본격적인 연구는 1990년 이후부터 시작된다. 2000년까지의 연구는 거의 대부분 교육사상 일반에 집중되어 있다. 그것도 남명에 편중되어 연구되었다. 2000년 이후는 남명학의 교육부분에 관한 연구가 다양화되는 경향을 보인다. 2000년 이후에는 기존의 연구자가 새로운 방법으로 연구의 영역을 확대하였고 다양한 전공의 연구자가 남명학의 교육부분 연구에 참여하게 되었다. 그리고 남명의 문인에 대한 개개인에 대한 연구가 남명학파라는 문인집단을 중심으로 연구의 방향이 변화되었다. 이러한 변화는 인접 학문의 연구방법이나 결과를 적극 반영한 것으로 보인다. 앞으로의 연구는 첫째로, 남명과 남명학파의 교육에 관한 다각도의 연구와 남명학의 계승에 관한 연구를 통하여 역사 속에서 남명학파의 정체성을 찾는 연구가 필요하며, 둘째로 남명과 남명학파의 향촌사회에서의 교육실천에 관한 연구를 통하여 그들의 영향이 향촌사회에 어떠한 형태로 적용되어 향촌사회 변화와 발전에 기여해 왔는가를 밝히는 연구가 필요하며, 세 번째로 남명과 비교될 수 있는 사람과의 비교연구를 통하여 교육사에 있어서 남명과 남명학파의 위상을 정립하는 연구가 필요하며, 넷째로 남명과 남명학에 대한 연구에 현대 서양교육학의 이론과 연구방법을 지속적으로 도입함으로써 지금까지의 남명학 연구가 가지고 있는 문제점과 한계점을 찾아 이를 극복할 수 있는 방안을 제시해야 할 것이다. 교육영역에 있어서의 남명과 남명학파에 관한 연구는 과거의 역사적 사실에 관한 연구를 바탕으로 현재 교육문제 해결의 단서를 제공하고 나가가 미래 교육발전의 방향을 제공할 때 의미가 있을 것이다. The purpose of this paper is three-fold: 1) to assess research papers written on the sixteenth century Great Teacher Cho Sik(曺植, 1501~1572, referred by his nickname Nam Myung from here on), which focus on political aspects of his life; 2) to find out why such research papers are scarce; and 3) to suggest how the current state of the discipline can be rejuvenated. Despite two previous reviews lamented on the scarcity of political analyses of Nam Myung, the results are positive but not satisfactory. They are positive in that a number of research efforts have in recent years increased, political scientists by training have appeared in the discipline, and some analysts began to examine not only Nam Myung`s political thoughts but also his other political aspects of his life. They are not satisfactory for the number of research outputs are still not many compared to those of education, literature, and history. The paper argues that the main reason for the scarcity is due to the fact that people in general and political scientists, both oriental and western in particular narrowly define politics. As a result, scholars on Nam Myung have failed to grasp the totality of Homo Politicus Nam Myung. Thus this paper offers a new definition of politics: politics is a phenomenon which results from actions to handle collective interests. Political actions in turn consist of meta-systemic utterances and writings, systemic utterances, writings, and actions as office-holders or power holders, and off-the-system utterances, writings, and actions. It is the third type of political action that promises abundant contemplation on Nam Myung`s political behaviors, especially political criticism in the form of petitions. The paper also suggests two methodological tools that may enrich these endeavors to enlighten Homo Politicus Nam Myung. One is the method of consilience amongst otherwise idiosyncratic academic fields. Modern academic training programs produce tunnel-visioned scholars most of whom do not know other fields than their own. Consilience amongst various specialties is therefore necessary as well as inevitable. The other is Quentin Skinner`s methodology which helps us rethink the debates within and without textualists and contextualists. He has argued that utterances represented in historical texts become knowable only if we recover illocutionary forces of those utterances. These suggested tools together with our new definition of politics will expand our intellectual horizon so as to meet a truly political Nam Myung.
