        상호텍스트성으로 풀어본 포크너 주인공들의 성장

        This paper aims to solve the inconsistency of some Faulknerian characters through intertextuality. For example, some critics have pointed out that Narcissa Benbow of Sanctuary is an unfavorable and even vicious person, while Narcy of Sartoris is a generous and sympathetic woman. “There Was a Queen.” shows the growing process of Narcy. Here, Narcy becomes the helpless victim of a federal agent who threatens to disclose her own shameful secret. Narcy sleeps with the agent to conceal the secret. Through this terrible experience, Narcy comes to learn that this world is not composed of just white and black. That she should be more humble and precautious in judging others. Similarly, Carothers Edmonds of Go Down, Moses is considered the main villain of “Delta Autumn” who discards his love and his own son. But this negative estimation of him cannot be in harmony with the image of Roth of “the Fire and the Hearth”. In the latter, Roth is depicted as a considerate, generous and sincere man who takes pains to prevent the impending divorce of an old black couple. This means Roth has grown into a better and sincerer man through his experience. In conclusion, intertextuality is a key to solve some incongruities of Faulkner's characterization. Through it, we can fill up the untold side of the story, and understand the processes and causes of the growth of some characters. (Sungshin Women’s University)

        글로벌역량 강화를 위한 영어 비교과프로그램 운영사례 - 한성대학교 잉글리시라운지를 중심으로

        본 연구는 한성대학교에서 운영하는 영어전용구역인 잉글리시라운지의 운영사례를 소개한 후, 잉글리시라운지의 교육프로그램들이 학생들의 글로벌역량 향상에 기여하는지를 점검했다. 자료 수집을 위하여 2020년 2학기에 잉글리시라운지 프로그램에 참여한 156명 학생을 대상으로 사전-사후 설문을 실시했고, 글로벌역량의 사전-사후 차이를 살펴보기 위하여 대응표본 t -test로 분석하였다. 그 결과, 잉글리시라운지에서 운영하는 프로그램이 학생들의 글로벌역량 향상에 유의미하게 기여하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 프로그램별로 역량 향상에 미치는 영향에서 차이를 보였으며, Group Speak 프로그램이 글로벌역량 향상에 가장 크게 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 조사되었다. Virtual Exchange의 경우 표본 수의 부족으로 통계상으로 유의미한 결과를 얻지는 못했지만 학생들의 글로벌역량의 평균값은 가장 크게 향상되었다. 4가지 종류의 Open Activity 수업의 효과성 차이에 대해서는 표본 수의 부족으로 유의미한 결과를 얻지 못하였다. 본 연구는 향후 학습자들의 글로벌역량을 보다 효과적으로 향상시킬 수 다양한 유형의 잉글리시라운지 프로그램의 개발로 이어질 수 있을 것이다. This study aims to find out whether the extra-curricular programs of English Lounge, an English-only zone operated by H University, have contributed to the improvement of participants global competency. For this purpose, pre and post course surveys were conducted on 156 students taking classes at English Lounge in the second semester of 2020. Paired t -test was run on the responses of the pre and post-questionnaire to identify any differences in global competency of the students before and after taking the classes. The results show that the English Lounge programs have significantly contributed to the improvement of students’ global competency. The programs have had a different impact on enhancing participants’ global competencies and Group Speak is found to have the greatest impact on global competency improvement. In case of Virtual Exchange, students’ global competency has improved the most though the results are not statistically meaningful due to not enough sample size. For the differences in effectiveness of the four types of Open Activity, significant results are not obtained due to insufficient sample numbers. This study is expected lead to the development of various types of English Lounge programs that can contribute to enhancing global competency of students.

        현대영미소설 : 『팔월의 빛』에 묘사된 하이타워의 환상의 원인 연구

        This article aims to analyze the ongm of the ``cavalry`` fantasy of Gail Hightower, who is one of the protagonists in Light in August. Until now, studies on him have been focused on the question whether he is saved from his fantasy at the last moment or not. A majority of critics argue Hightower comes to get salvation through helping with Lena``s delivery, returning to and reconciling with the community at last. Others disagree with such a positive interpretation, and assert that he fails to be saved from his suffering in that he dies in his lifelong fantasy, which distorted and destroyed his life. However, there have not been enough studies on the origin of his fantasy. With the help of Freud and Lacan, this paper tries to prove that Hightower``s fantasy comes from a self-defense mechanism, not from a genuine worship of his grandfather``s heroic death. In short, Hightower developed the obsessive passion for his grandfather``s heroic military exploits to conceal his inappropriate hate toward his father, providing a typical example of Oedipus complex. Young Hightower retained a strong sense of unity with his mother, who had been, he believed, suffering to death from her husband``s self-righteous negligence. As a result, young Hightower transferred his desire of patricide to a more positive feeling of hero worship of his grandfather. In conclusion, it can be said that Hightower``s fantasy comes from his anxiety hysteria that he might commit a patricide, which caused him to create a hero worship to conceal and divert the horrible desire.

        독해 · 영작 중심의 교양영어프로그램이 한국 대학생의 영어자기효능감에 미치는 영향

        성공적인 외국어 학습을 위해 필요한 요소 중 하나로 자기효능감이 주목받아 왔지만, 이와 관련된 연구중 다수는 중등학교 학생들을 대상으로 수행된 연구들이다. 본 연구는 영어 독해와 작문 중심의 교양영어프로그램이 대학 신입생들의 자기효능감에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 자료 수집을 위하여 교양영어프로그램을 수강하는 중급반 학생을 대상으로 사전-사후 설문을 실시하였고, 해당 학생들을 지도하는 교수자들을 대상으로 영작 지도 유형을 파악하기 위한 인터뷰도 실시하였다. 학생들의 자기효능감의 사전-사후 차이를 살펴보기 위하여, 대응표본 t -test로 분석하였으며, 일원분산분석으로 교수자의 지도 유형에 따른 차이가 있는지를 통계적으로 확인하였다. 그 결과, 독해 · 작문 중심의 교양영어프로그램이 중급반에서 영어를 학습하는 학생들의 자기효능감에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤고, 교수자의 영작과제 부여 횟수와 운영방식에 따른 차이가 확인되었다. 본 연구의 결과를 토대로, 신입생을 대상으로 하는 교양영어 수업에서 학습자들의 성공적인 학습 경험을 높일수 있는 다양한 유형의 과제 개발과 효과적인 교수자의 피드백 방식 등에 대한 후속 연구가 필요하며, 이는 학습자의 자기효능감을 높이는 데에 있어서 보다 효과적인 교양영어 수업 모델 개발로 이어질 것이다. Though it has been known that self-efficacy is a predictor to the successful L2 learning, the majority of studies on self-efficacy cases were targeted at secondary school students. This paper aims to explore the effects of the intermediate college students’ essay writing experiences on their English self-efficiency. For this purpose, pre and post course surveys were conducted on a hundred or so freshmen who took intermediate college English classes which focused on improving English reading and writing skills. Interviews with teachers were also conducted in order to find out whether the differences of their teaching styles had any meaningful impact on their students’ self-efficacy. Paired t -test was run on the responses of the post-questionnaire to identify any differences in the self-efficacies of the students before and after taking the classes, and the one-way ANOVA was conducted to find out whether the different instruction types had any significant impact on the differences. The results of the both analyses confirmed the differences of self-efficacies by the two predictors at a statistically significant level. Based on the findings of this paper, various types of writing assignments and efficient procedures of teachers’ feedback need to be developed further in order to design and run an effective college English course which can contribute to enhancing self-efficacy of students.

        H대학교 교양이수체계 개편 사례 연구

        4차산업혁명의 도래와 더불어 대학의 교양교육은 그 내용과 방법에 있어서 근본적인 혁신을 요구받아왔다. H대학교는 시대적 변화에 부응하면서 교육수요자의 필요를 충족시키는 교양교육체계를 확립하기 위해 지속적으로 노력해 왔다. 크게 보아 H대학교의 개선 노력은 역량기반 교양교육과 전통적인 자유학예 교양교육을 조화시키는 방향으로 이루어져 왔다. 구체적으로 이는 핵심역량중심 교양교육 체계 확립이라는 교육부의 요구와 기초-교양-소양이라는 교기원의 교양체계를 발전적으로 수렴, 조화시키는 교양교육체계 확립으로 요약할 수 있다. 그 변화의 출발점은 2017년 말에 받았던 교기원의 기본 컨설팅이었다. 이에 근거해서 2019년도 교양이수체계를 전면적으로 개편하였으며, 교양이수학점도 기존 22학점에서 28학점으로 대폭 확대하는 동시에, 배분이수체계를 도입하였다. 또한 교육부의 가이드라인을 참고하여, 핵심역량 제고를 위한 2020학년도 교양이수체계를 확립하였다. 이를 위해 교과목과 역량을 매칭시켰으며, 3대 핵심역량을 균형 있게 함양하기 위해 몇몇 영역과 과목들을 신설하였다. <사회봉사> 과목과 <글로벌 시민의식> 과목군은 그 대표적 예이다. 이런 변화를 통해 H대학교는 4차산업혁명 시대를 능동적으로 대처해 나갈 수 있는 역량을 갖춘 인재를 양성하는 교양교육이 되기를 기대하고 있다. With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the liberal arts education of universities has been called for fundamental innovation in its content and methods. H university has continuously made efforts to improve its general education curriculum with the goal of satisfying students’ needs as well as the demands of the times. Its efforts can be summarized as the harmonization of competency-based education and the traditional liberal arts education. In more detail, it has tried to meet the demands of Ministry of Education which requests each university to establish its general education system focusing on key competencies. Simultaneously, it also radically changed its education system based on the guidelines of the Korea National Institute for General Education(KONIGE). The starting point of those changes was the basic consulting by KONIGE in 2017. According to the consulting report, H university introduced comprehensive and overall revision of its liberal arts education curriculum, increasing its liberal arts credit requirements from 22 to 28 credits in 2019. It has also reorganized and reclassified its liberal arts courses by introducing distributive elective classes. In 2020, in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Education, H university altered its curriculum once more in order to establish a competency-based general education curriculum. Under the new curriculum, all requirement subjects are completely matched with key competencies of H university. It also includes newly opened courses and subject areas such as “Social Service” and “Global Citizenship.” Through these changes, H university hopes that its general education contributes to fostering students equipped with key competencies, who can face actively this challenging period.

        체스와 정신분석: 윌리엄 포크너의 「기사의 첫 수」 (“Knight`s Gambit”)를 읽는 두 개의 키워드

        William Faulkner`s “Knight`s Gambit” is a novella which depicts the way Gavin Stevens tries to prevent a family tragedy from taking place. In return for his role, he succeeds in marrying his first love, Melisandre Backus. The story begins with a scene where Gavin and his nephew are playing a chess game. Chess is the most important motif in the story and contributes to enriching the meaning of the text. In the fiction, Max Harriss, Melisandre`s spoiled son attempts to kill his would-be father Sabastian Gualdres because Gualdres courts his mother and his sister at the same time. However, Gavin finds out his plan in advance and prevents it from being put into practice. He urges Max to enlist in the army. Max cannot but obey his demand. Gavin is able to marry Melisandre with no interference. In this sense, the title of the novella comprehensively accounts for the plot. Knight`s gambit, a chess term refers to the move of the Knight which sacrifices the Pawn to rapidly develop his own forces. Gavin discards his Pawns like Max and Gauldres in order to capture the opponent`s Queen, Melisandre. Chess is also closely related with psychoanalysis in that it aims to checkmate or capture the king symbolizing the father. Patricide or the desire to kill and replace one`s own father is the basic motif of the psychoanalytic theory posited by Sigmund Freud. In terms of Lacan`s theory, Gavin, the county attorney of Yoknapatawpha is playing the role of the symbolic father when he tells Max to enlist, which can be compared to spiritual castration. Max enters the Symbolic by accepting Gavin`s demand. At this moment, the imaginary ego becomes the symbolic subject. In other words, the fictional “I” becomes the true “I”. In conclusion, the psychoanalytic theory of Freud and Lacan adds to the depth and meaning of the story.

        포크너의 『성소』의 구조 분석: 반복과 변주

        This paper aims to analyze Faulkner’s sensational novel, Sanctuary, focusing on its repetitious and complex structure. This novel provides a structural approach to elucidate its ambiguous plot and confusing temporal backdrops. The key to understand Sanctuary’s narrative lies in its contrapuntal composition and structural flashback. This novel consists of distinctive stories of two protagonists, followed by each other in turn. Whenever one protagonist’s story alternates with the other one’s, a structural flashback sets in, because the latter begins where it ended several chapters ago. The seemingly disparate traumatic experiences of the protagonists are the same in essential. These devices contribute to heightening the dramatic effect of main theme, disclosing the prevalent hypocrisy and violence of the American South in the 1930s. (Hansung University)

        윌리엄 포크너의 『사토리스』 연구: 변화에 대한 대처 방식을 중심으로

        This paper aims to analyze the various ways in which Faulknerian characters deal with change. In Sartoris, three kinds of attitudes toward change appear. First, some people, including Young Bayard and his wife, Narcy, refuse to face their changing reality. Instead, they try to escape into the past or adhere to tradition. Second, there are others who are willing to step out and avail themselves of change. Caspey, old Simon’s son, represents this category. He participated in the First World War, and returned home, baptized with the idea of racial equality. However, his new belief fails to draw the sympathy of readers, especially when he demands he get white women. Finally, there are some wise characters, such as Miss Jenny, Old Bayard, and Horace Benbow. They are neither obsessed with the past nor blindly praise change for more material prosperity. In the literature seminars at the University of Virginia, Faulkner emphasized the inevitability of change and the key role of wise people in guiding change in the right direction. However, the wise people of Sartoris are too weak to play their roles in leading change for a better tomorrow. That’s why the tone of this novel is felt tragic. (Hansung University)

        ‘도둑맞은 편지’를 둘러싼 주체와 권력의 상관관계: 포우, 라캉, 포크너 비교연구

        This paper aims to interpret William Faulkner’s short story, “There Was a Queen,” in terms of Lacanian theory. Using Poe’s “The Purloined Letter,” Lacan asserts that the signifier is absolutely superior to the signified. According to him, the privileged signifer, or the letter constructs the subject, not vice versa. Faulkner dealt with a similar motif and topic in his story, where Narcissa Benbow, the heroine of the story was put in a cul-de-sac due to some purloined letters. These erotic, even obscene letters should have long been destroyed. Instead, she kept cherishing them for erotic gratification when they suddenly disappeared. The heroine had no choice but to pay for the recovery of the letters with her own body. That is, the letters had irresistible power over her. This paper compares how Faulkner and Lacan use the same motif of ‘the purloined letter’ to deliver their own messages effectively. (Hansung University)
