Korean old sea goddess and Chinese old sea goddess should be studied in an aspect of East-Asian Sea Silk Road. The Buddhist Goddess of Mercy (Kwanum Bosal) from Bota mountain came to the coast of Gwannam from South India through the Sea of Dongjina (South Sea of China). The Buddhist Goddess of Mercy from the south was a combination of vishnu of Hindu and Kwanum Bosal of Esoteric Buddhism and was assumed to came to the mountain Bota. Its hinduistic aspect is that it is a Dango (a small old woman) and jumps from one island to another in three steps. The Esoteric Buddhism of the Sea from the Sea of Donjina met Chinese traditional belief around Bota mountain and combined with Mago in Cheontae Mountain which was developed around the coast of Jeojang-seong and a belief in Kwanum. it became the Giant Halmi Haesin and came to the south east coast of Korean Peninsula. Vishnu who invented the universe in three steps incarnated as Kwanum then Dango Halmi (old woman) and combined with Mago in Cheontae Mountain. It finally became the Giant Halmi Haesin. The Giant Halmi Haesin came to Korean Peninsula through Sadan Sea Route and became Kaeyang Halmi in Beonsan Peninsula and Seonmoondae Halmang (old woman) in Hanla Mountain. Baeku Kwanum Bosal (The Buddhist Goddess of Mercy in white clothes) in Bota Mountain incarnated as Kaeyang Halmi and Mago Halmi in Cheontae Mountain aged and became Seonmoondae Halmang. The origin of Mago Halmi of Korea is the giant Kwanum Bosal in Bota Mountain and Mago in Cheontae Mountain in China. Kaeyang Halmi and Seonmoondae Halmang are the old sea goddesses from Sadan Sea Route between Bota Mountain in China and southeast coast in Korean Peninsula.

The U.S.-Japan security alliance is in the middle of readjustment after the start of Japanese Democratic Party Administration. Democratic Party of Japan issued a new foreign policy including a close and equal relationship with the U.S. and building an East Asian Community during the campaign period and after the election DPJ government started to renegotiate the Futenma Air Station Relocation Plan with Washington. The renegotiation itself developed into the conflict between the two countries, and other agendas like defense burdeng sharing and the revision of SOFA can weaken the U.S.-Japan alliance. But Tokyo is supporting the Obama's vision of nuclear-free world and shows the willingness to accept the No First Use(NFU) of nuclear weapon policy of the U.S., which, if decided, can contribute to intensify the alliance relations. Since Futenma Air Station relocation can change the military readiness in this area and the adoption of NFU policy can change the extended deterrecne commitment of the U.S., Seoul need to pay attention to these possible changes. Also Seoul need to learn the possilble new concept for management of alliance, such as the bureau of alliance and Nuclear Planning Group, which can be formed between Tokyo and Washington in the future.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, people had a hard life because of frequent natural disasters such as drought and owing to the deficiency of water supply, people could not grow crops well so they died of famine and disease caused from malnutrition. People who deserted their home to avoid famine and disease also died of hunger on the streets or become a begger or a thief and this phenomena lasted for about 100 years. The long lasted drought made people develop meals to overcome famine and places to treat disease. Jungbo Salrim Kyeonjae written by U, Jung Rim in the late 17th century described on disease treatment and famine relief. People made a special sauce and meals by using grains, seeds, herbs and trees to overcome famine and special medicine for treatment of disease. Folklore on Guhwang was about how to overcome famine and folklore on disease treatment was about ways to treat disease. The folklores induced development of scientific medical disease treatment and sharmanistic ways to treat disease. Jungbo Salrim Kyeonjae of U, Jung Rim which had a part on disease treatment contributed the establishment of folklore on medical ways to treat disease in the late period of Chosun Dynasty.

The fomentation period of Korean folklore is Japanese colonial period. To get rid of the spirit of Korean, Japan made a group of Japanese scholars for investigation of Korean folklore. Korean historians, such as Chae Ho Shin and In Bo Jeong, studied Korean ancient times (Sanggo period- a period from old Chosun to Sam-Han) to find spiritual background of Korean ethnological culture to be against the manipulation of Korean history by the Japanese scholars. Jin Tae Son and Seok Ha Song who studied in Japan in 1920s had influence of Japanese anthropologists and made Association of Chosun Folklore. The Japanese scholars intended to make Korean folklore as imperial folklore and the students who had their influence collected data in the field. The colonial folklore during the colonial period still affect the means of study on Korean folklore even after the Korean liberation. Folklore is a study of ethnological culture and should be investigated in the field of ethnology. Jin Tae Son said that “Folklore is science that studies ethnological culture”. Even these days, 70 years after Korean liberation, we still have no foundation of independent learning for ethnology. Scholars who study on folklore should try to find traditional Korean culture in ethnology, restore it, and hand it down to our descendents.

Korean Juldarigi (a tug of war ) consists of Ssang-juldarigi(Gossaum), Oi-juldarigi (with a dragon shape rope), Gae-juldarigi (with a crab shape rope), and Anjun-juldarigi (a tug of war in sitting position). A tug of war is a game performed at a ceremony or an event in Southeast Asia such as Japan, China, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia including Korea. The Korean tug of war has similar properties to other tug of war played in other countries in Southeast. Gossaum is similar to Turoongyeonsak, Young-juldarigi can be compared to Naga and Gae-juldarigi looks similar to with a crab shape rope. A tug of war was handed down more often to the people in coast areas than in inland areas. Korean tug of war was considered as a part of an agricultural event. However, Korean tug of war has Young-juldarigi (with a dragon shaped rope) and people worship a dragon as a symbol from heaven in inland areas and from the sea in coast areas. We can see this from the processes of Gansin (a process that calls for a god), Oshin (a process that pleases a god), and Songshin (a process that bids farewell to a god). People send a dragon back to heaven by wrapping a stone or a tree on Dangsan (a mountain where village people believe that god lives in) with the rope after a tug of war in inland areas. People in coast areas send a dragon back to sea by throwing th rope into the sea. It is an Asian custom that a tug of war is conducted on the fullmoon day in January and August in lunar calendar. Korean tug of war is commonly performed in January and it has the origin of Asinan tug of war. Turoongyeonsak, Naga and Gae-juldarigi shows that Asian tug of war has components of Esoteric Buddhism. It was recorded in 『Dongguksaeshigi』which says “Monks in blak Sungbok (cloths that monks wear) likes to play a tug of war. The tug of war was performed at lotus lamp festival in Corea dynasty when Esoteric Buddhism was developed and became a traditional game conducted in a village in Chosun Dynasty. There are other records that a tug of war was from Esoteric Buddhism and they say Naga in Angkor Wat and Shigujihee in China are from Turoongyeonsak in a book on Buddhism 『Yeolbankyeong』. Varies kinds of tug of war came from Southeast Asia to Korean Peninsula through the sea silk road and we can understand the background of them. Korean Juldarigi was based on Esoteric Buddhism of India and became a part of a ceremony for it as it came to the East Asia. A tug of war was performed by monks in Tibet as a way to overcome agony and reincarnation at first then it began to be a part of the New Year festival. The tug of war was a ceremony to become a new person on New Year’s Day like a snake and a crab that do self-renewal. People did a tug of war as a symbol of regeneration thinking they were sending old ideas and the old world and greeting a new world and a new life.

Tug of war has been transmitted in East Asia including Korea. It is performed at Doug Jae (Dong Festival) on the 15th of January, the First Full Moon day in Korea meanwhile, it is performed at Poong Yeon Jae (Poong Yeon Festival) on the 15th of August, Thanks Giving Day in Japan by lunar calender. The rope is made of rice grass and the symbol and the way to perform the tug of war are basically same in Korea and Japan There are two types of tug of war according to the type of rope; one rope and two ropes. At the tug of war on Dong Jae and Poong Yeon Jae, two ropes, male rope and female rope, are used. Each has a Go, a circle and the frame is wrapped with rice grass, at the forehead. It is uncertain when the tug of war started in Korea and Japan. Tug of war first appeared in Jeju wooden sculpture in the book, Shin jung dong guk yeo gi sung ram published in the early Chosun Dynasty. The tug of war in Jeju, Jorijihee was performed on the 15th of August which was the same kind performed in Japan. A picture of a tug of war appears in the embossed sculpture made in the 12th century of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Augkor Wat is representative temple of Hindoo in East Asia. The embossed sculpture of a tug of war is a depiction of a myth, rowing in the sea of milk. The myth about the god of Hindoo, Visnu had a tug of war with a snake, Basuki against evil for a thousand years. Basuki is a snake, Naga in India. There was a ceremony making Turungyeonsak, a wheel wrapped with a rope, in Buddism in India. It was passed to Tang in China around the 8th century and it developed the belief, Bulgong gyeonsak gwanum and it passed to Japan. Tug of war is performed in Kusu-Okinawa and Okinawa is the place that turbulent flow of Kuroshio current comes from East Asia passes. There are two kinds of tug of wat performed in Japan. One is performed on the 15th of August which was from East Asia and the other is performed at the Festival of Lanterns on the 15th of January which was from China meanwhile, the second type is mostly performed in Korea. The tug of war performed at the Festival of Lanterns is usually Naga type and the tug of wat fighting with male tope and female rope is performed at Hawonjeol, on the 15th of August. Both tug of wars are performed in Korea. The origin of tug of war is supposed to be East Asia such as India, Indonesia, Cambodia and Vietnam since it appears in a myth of Hindoo and pictures and embossed sculptures of it are found in Hindoo religion. It seems that the tug of war passed to Korea through Okinawa following Kuroshio current and the time is assumed to be late Corea or early Chosun. The tug of wat performed for good harvest on the 15th of January seems to be a ceremony of Esoteric Buddhism such as lighting lotus lanterns at the Festival of Lanterns. The shape of the rope is dragon not snake with the effect of Buddhism.
