        Cholesterol cystal embolism is a serious complication of atheroma. Cholesterol embolism can give rise a various clinical spectrum, depending of the site of the embolism, but neurological manifestation involving spinal cord is extremely rare. We describe a case of cholesterol embolism causing spinal cord infarction presented with myelopathy. A 74-year-old male visited our hospital due to sudden paraparesis and sensory loss below T10 dermatome. Laboratory test revealed renal failure requiring hemodialysis and renal biopsy showed cholesterol cleft emboli in the microvascular space. Myelopathy would be presenting symptom of systemic cholesterol crystal embolism. (Korean J Stroke 2008;10:139-141)

        호산구 척수염을 보인 개회충증

        Infection with Toxocara canis evokes various symptoms by migration of the larva via hematogenic infiltration, but CNS involvement has rarely been documented. We describe a 63-year-old man who had eosinophilic myelitis associated with T. canis. He had subacute progressive lower body paresthesia. Spine MR revealed that the intramedullary lesion was in the thoracic cord. CSF analysis showed many eosinophils and elevated antibody titers to T. canis. These results indicate that parasitic infection should be considered as a possible cause of subacute myelitis.         편측성으로 설계된 하악 유리단 국소의치에서 직접유지장치의 설계 변화에 따른 광탄성 응력 분석에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this study was to analyze the magnitude and distribution of stress using a photoelastic model from a unilateral distal extention removable partial dentures with five kinds of the direct retainers, that is, the bilaterally designed bar clasp of the cross-arch lingual bar and the unilaterally designed bar clasp, circumferential clasp, mini-Dalbo attachment, and telescope retainer. A photoelastic model for mandible was made of the epxy resin(PL-1) and hardner (PLH-1) with the acrylic resin teeth used and was coated with plastic cement-1 at the lingual surface of the model, and then five kinds of removable partial dentures were set. A unilateral vertical load of about 16㎏ was applied on the first molar and the stress pattern of the photoelastic model under each condition was analyzed by the reflective circular polariscope. The following results were obtained: 1. The conventional removable partial denture with the bilaterally cross arch lingual bar produced th most favorable stress distribution on the residual ridge and supporting structure of abutment teeth than the unilaterally designed removable partical dentures. 2. The uilaterally designed removable partial denture with the bar clasp produced the stress distribution on the residual ridge, except sligtly higher stress concentration on the supporting structure of the abutment teeth, similar to the conventional removable partial dentrue with the bilaterally designed cross arch lingual bar. 3. On the unilaterally designed removable partial dentures, the bar clasp produced greater stress distribution on the residual ridge and supporting structure of the abutment teeth than the circumferential clasp. 4. On the unilaterally designed removable partial dentures, the mimi-Dalbo attachment produced relatively higher stress concentration on the residual ridge, but produced lesser stress concentration on the supporting structure of the abutment teeth than the other direct retainers. 5. On the unilaterally designed removable partial dentures, the telescope retainer produced uniform stress distribution on the residual ridge, but produced higher stress concentration at the root apex of the terminal abutment tooth than the other direct retainers. 6. On the unilaterally designed removable partial dentures, the circumferential clasp and telescope retainer produced slightly higher stress concentration on the residual ridge and supporting structure of the abutment teeth than the bar clasp and mini-Dalbo attachment.

        Metabolic Phenotyping of Berries in Different Six Grape (Vitis vinifera) Cultivars

        Metabolic behaviors of different grapevine cultivars,grown in the same greenhouse, were characterized through a 1HNMR-based metabolomic approach. Pattern recognition, includingthe principal component analysis, revealed clear dependence ofthe grape metabolome on the grape cultivar. Interestingly, highaccumulations of proline in the purebred grape cultivars of CabernetSauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay were found, whereas theproline levels were depleted in the crossbred grape cultivars ofSteuben, Campbell Early (C. E.), and Seibel. Intrinsic levels ofalanine, glutamine, and trans-feruloyl derivative were highest inC. E. cultivar, which grows easily in a wild vineyard, particularlyin Korea, suggesting that their levels play important roles in theimprovement of resistance or adaptation of the plant to environmentalstress, such as freezing stress during the winter season inKorea. The present study highlights that metabolomics is a powerfulapproach for better understanding the differences of intrinsicmetabolic variables of grape berries among various grape cultivarsand their associations with the plant physiological mechanisms.
