l. Sojeokbaekchoolsan compound treatment decreased pulmonary fibrosis induced by Bleomycin. 2. At 1 and 2 days after bleomycin treatment, Sojeokbaekchoolsan compound treatment decreased the number of neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage than those of bleomycin alone treatment. 3. Sojeokbaekcoolsan compound treatment increased the Fc receptor mediated rosette activity of alveolar macrophage decreased by bleomycin treatment. 4, At 10 days after bleomycin treatment, Sojeokbaekchoolsan compound treatment decreased the lipid peroxidation of lung tissue than those of bleomycin alone treatment. 5. Anti-tumor activity of Sojeokbaekchoolsan and bleomycin compound group was higher than those of bleomycin alone treated group to ascitic tumor caused by Sarcoma-180 tumor cells.

Gekko has been used for several diseases including cancer in Oriental medicine and fork herbalogy. Nevertheless, its origin as herbal medicine and its efficacy and mechanism as anti-tumor drug have not yet been thoroughly reported in Korea. This study aimed to investigate anti-tumor effect of Gekko through selected articles from cqvip database in China. In vitro and In vivo, Gekko could obviously inhibit tumor growth, induce tumor cells apoptosis, reduce micro-vessel density in tumor tissue through down regulating VEGF & bFGF protein expression, promote cytotoxicity of lymphocyte. Gekko could improve survival rate, relive clinical symptoms, improve quality of life, and relieve anti-tumor treatment reaction, suggesting that Gekko might be a effective anti-tumor drug.
식중독환자에서 분리한 Salmonella Enteritidis 다제내성 플라스미드의 내성유전자 집락의 구조해석

Clinically isolated Salmonella Enteritidis strain has a multi drug resistance plasmid, which confers ampicillin, chloramphe-nicol, sulfonamide, streptomycin and tetracycline, named pCAST2. We cloned a 7 kb Sacl fragment of pCAST2 which has sulfonamide, streptomycin and tetracycline resistance genes. The 7 kb SacI fragment showed the organization of sulII-strA-strB-tetR-tetA gene cluster which is different from the other clusters reported previously. In this study, we presented the method to detect this cluster by PCR analysis and showed that this cluster was found in Salmonella strains occurred sporadically at Kyungpook province in 2002. 2001년 경북지역의 설사환자로부터 분리된, Salmonella Enteritidis SY9 균주로부터 ampicillin, chloramphenicol, sulfonamide, streptomycin, tetracycline에 내성을 가지는 40 kb plasmid를 분리하였다. pCAST2 라고 명명한 이 다제내성 plasmid로부터 sulfonamide, streptomycin, tetracycline 내성유전자를 가지는 약 7 kb의 Sacl 단편을 클로닝 하였다. 이 7 kb 단편 염기서열의 내성유전자의 구조는 sulII-strA-strB-tetR-tetA의 집락으로 기존에 보고되지 않은 새로운 유전자 배열을 나타내었다. 본 연구에서는 내성유전자 집락을 검출할수 있는 primer를 제작하여 PCR 분석을 통해서 이들 구조를 탐지할 수 있는 방법을 제시하였다. 또한 PCR 분석을 통한 구조 비교로, 이 집락이 2002년 8월에 경북지역에서 산발적으로 발생한 Salmonella 균주에서도 발견됨을 확인하였다.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is an agonizing illness that impedes the quality of life of people worldwide. Although this syndrome is reported to be increasing in industrialized countries, there are as yet no effective therapies. In the view of Oriental medicine, chronic fatigue syndrome is thought to result from a state of unbalanced inter-organ functions, or a condition of deficiency in the qi or blood characteristics. On the other hand, chronic fatigue-related symptoms are one of the most common complaints of patients using complementary and alternative medicine. This study aimed to theoretically analyze chronic fatigue syndrome from an Oriental medicine point of view, so to help Oriental doctors to design appropriate therapeutic models.

Recently, the proportion of the population older has increased rapidly. As the aged population is increasing, the prevalence of malignancy rises with age, too. We believe that the potential benefits of approach to cancer care in the elderly are self-evident. In order to investigate the characteristics of cancer in the elderly, we reviewed literature related with the biology of the aged with cancer. The elderly undergo age-related changes in their physiology which may result in altered tolerance to disease and to the requirements of the management of illness. The possible reasons for the increased prevalence of cancer in the elderly are a longer potential duration of exposure to carcinogens, a reduced ability of repair DNA and reduced host defences against malignancy. In general, cancer patients in the elderly have a shorter survival. Because it is impossible to offer the active treatment of cancer in the elderly. Also, they have the problems that the psychosocial change and reduce of physiological function such as absorption, metabolism and excretion. We hope that other groups will further research cancer in the elderly in future.
