마하스웨타 데비의 1084의 어머니에 나타난 낙살라이트 운동과 모성의 윤리

        손석주 21세기영어영문학회 2019 영어영문학21 Vol.32 No.2

Mahasweta Devi’s Mother of 1084, arguably the first novel on the Naxalite armed movement in India, sheds light on the agency of motherhood and examines the possibility of forming ethical relationship between human beings regardless of class and ideology. This paper examines the ways in which a mother of a young Naxalite guerilla gains a new sense of motherhood and protests the governing system as she comes to understand the cause of her son's death as well as her alienation. A series of her interrogations shows a way of countering the hegemonic discourse of the ruling elite and police, which, in turn, makes it possible to bring back his son’s name in place of the corpse number 1084. This paper also pays keen attention to her scream of pain, which seemingly stems from the bursting of her appendix, but is actually an alternative way of calling for the establishment of human ethics for underprivileged others like Naxalite guerrillas.

Cultural Imperialism, Interpellation, and Speaking Back in Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things

        손석주 21세기영어영문학회 2014 영어영문학21 Vol.27 No.4

This paper explores the ways in which the twins in Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things respond to and counteract cultural imperialism and interpellation to become subjects of their own experience. Among others, I appropriate the idea and theory of Althusser in postcolonial contexts to discuss how these characters are not controlled or silenced as children or after they return as adults. They employ a variety of strategies to resist and subvert hegemonic language, culture, and power. The little twins use the vernacular language to transgress and counter standard English usage and proper pronunciation, and the twin brother uses silence and invisibility as daily practices of the self. In the end, this study shows how the practices of appropriating and transforming the hegemonic discourse help these “bad subjects” speak back to the authorities. Such a failure of interpellation raises the possibility of opening up a negotiatory space for agency as it leads to subversion in the text.

Telluric Acid가 흰쥐 간조직의 미세구조에 미치는 영향

        손석주,정영길,조승묵,백태경,최창도,최월봉,Son, Serk-Joo,Jeong, Young-Gil,Cho, Seung-Muk,Baik, Tai-Kyung,Choi, Chang-Do,Choi, Wol-Bong 한국현미경학회 1995 Applied microscopy Vol.25 No.4

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of telluric acid on the histological and fine structural changes in the rat liver. Fischer 344 rats($150{\sim}200gm$) were used in this study as control and experimental groups. Telluric acid(5 mg/100 gm of body weight) suspensed in olive oil was given intraperitoneally to the animals of the experimental group and only olive oil to those of the control group. At the intervals of 3, 6 and 12 hours, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 60 days after administration, the animals were sacrificed, and livers were obtained from the rats. For light microscopic examination of the liver, sections($5{\mu}m$) were stained with hematoxylineosin(H-E). For electron microscopic examination of the liver, sections were stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate, finally examined with Zeiss EM 109 electron microscopes. The results obtained were as follows. 1. In the control group, round nucleus. well developed mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, rough endoplasmic reticulum(RER) and numerous glycogen particles were observed in the cytoplasm of the hepatocyte. In the cytoplasmic membranes of the hepatocyte, sinusoidal surface had numerous microvilli and cellular surface is combinated adjacent hepatocyte with desmosomes. The RER cisterns were dilated and zymogen granules were fewer than those of the dark cells. Kupffer cells with irregular nuclear membrane were observed. Fat storing cell and collagenous fiber bundle were observed in the Disse space. 2. Kupffer cell, inflammatory cells in the connective tissue of hepatic triad and lysosome were increased in the 3, 6, and 12 hour experimental group comparing with that of the control group. 3. In the 1 day experimental group, infiltration of inflammatory cells in interlobular connective tissue, dilatation of sinusoidal capillary and increasing of Kupffer cell were observed. Atropic change of hepatocyte and aggregation of glycogen particles in the cytoplasm of hepatocyte were observed. In this group, desmosome near bile canaliculi and collagenous fiber bundle in the Disse space were increased comparing with that of the 12 hours experimental group. In the 2 days experimental group, desmosome, lysosome, peroxisome and collagenous fiber bundle were increased comparing with that of the 1 day experimental group. Furthermore, lamellated bodies were also seen in the cytoplasm of the hepatocyte. 4. In 3 and 5 days experimental groups, transformations of hepatic cell cord and degeneration of the hepatocyte were markedly inclosed comparing with the all experimental groups. And damaged RER and mitochondria. collagenous fiber bundle were also inclosed comparing with that of the 2 days experimental group. Autophagosome and fat storing cells with large lipid droplets were also observed comparing with that of the 2 days experimental group. Tight junction and desmosome between the hepatocytes were separated. These degenerating changes were severe through the all experimental groups. 5. In the 10 and 20 days experimental groups, arrangement of hepatic cell cords and cell organelles of hepatocytes were similar to those of the control group. However, aggregation of glycogen particles, dilatation of sinusoidal capillary and infiltration of inflammatory cells remained. 6. In the 30 days experimental group, the tissue findings were similar to those of the control grout. But lamellated bodies in some hepatocytes and lysosome were remained in the cytoplasms of the Kupffer cells. In the 60 days experimental group, these all changes were recovered as the control group. In conclusion, telluric acid would directly induce the degenerative and necrotic changes on the hepatic tissue. However, these changes were perfectly recoverd in the 60 days experimental group as the control group.

살만 루시디의 키호테에 나타난 감시 제국과 디아스포라 판타지의 대안적 세계

        손석주 21세기영어영문학회 2023 영어영문학21 Vol.36 No.1

This paper explores the ways in which Salman Rushdie uses the technique of fantasy as an alternative discourse aimed at countering the dominance of truth and the imperial system of surveillance in his latest novel Quichotte. Rushdie’s 14th novel, a postcolonial version of Miguel de Cervantes’s classic Don Quixote, also appropriates the ancient Indian concept of maya as well as Jean Baudrillard’s notion of hyperreal and simulacrum in order to explore the possibility of escaping from the crisis of Western civilization and ultimately creating an alternative world. The paper shows how the deployment of fantasy is instrumental in empowering postcolonial immigrants to resist the hegemonic truth and the insidious surveillance system controlled by digital media and drugs in the U.S. Based on this, it argues that Rushdie’s fantasy contributes to raising the prospect of creating a counter space in reality for them, as opposed to Baudrillard’s pessimistic view of the future dominated by digital technology.

Suicide and Transformative Agency in Rohinton Mistry’s A Fine Balance

손석주 한국영미어문학회 2015 영미어문학 Vol.- No.118

This paper explores the ways in which Maneck’s suicide in Rohinton Mistry’s novel, A Fine Balance works as a viable strategy for resisting and transforming the hegemonic order of postcolonial India. Rather than a mere sequence or repetition of events, Maneck’s death on the railway establishes a critical point of grounding and creates the metaphorical effects of a new community. The highlight of this research is to illustrate how oppression or abjection can be transformed into a mode of agency in the circulatory, recursive structure of transgression and protest. To that end, by arguing the importance of strategic essentialism coupled with everyday practice I emphasize the need to problematize the dominant concept of space and time so as to explore the potential reterritorialization of space and the repossession of time. Among others, I draw attention to how a carnivalesque gathering in Dina’s kitchen following Maneck’s suicide serves as a powerful metaphor for reasserting a place within the governing space. To explore suicide as a mode of resistance and transformation, I appropriate the theories of Bhaktin, Foucault, Bhabha, Ashcroft, and de Certeau.

Sexual Transgression: Agency of Spatial and Temporal Transformation in Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things

손석주 한국영미어문학회 2014 영미어문학 Vol.- No.115

This paper explores the ways in which sexual transgression such as incest works as a viable strategy of resistance to and transformation of hegemonic history. Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things illustrates the agency of sexual transgression in the recursive structure of law-defying desire. In particular, I consider how the circularity of Kari Saipu’s pederasty, Ammu’s sex with a Dalit servant, and the twins’ incest brings about for the downtrodden and marginalized the reassertion of place as well as the reinscription of the hegemonic concept of time. The novel shows that ‘sexual outlaws’ who are perceived to be abnormal, insane, or perverts can never be eliminated. Transgressive sexual practices enable them to explore the possibility of agency in oppression or abjection, so that they can return to interrogate, subvert, or reinscribe the hegemonic discourses that deny them subjecthood and livable life. To explore sexual outlaws’ transformation into subjects of their history and experience, I appropriate the theories of Foucault, Bhabha, Butler, and Spivak. Among others, the examination of the interstices of history and politics shows how pederasty, a trope of colonial power’s exploitation, and caste-crossing sex can be connected with a metaphor for the twins’ subversive political agency.

Abject Body and Ethics of Resistance in Salman Rushdie’s Shame, Rohinton Mistry’s Such a Long Journey

        손석주 21세기영어영문학회 2013 영어영문학21 Vol.26 No.4

This paper explores the ways in which subaltern characters in Salman Rushdie’s Shame and Rohinton Mistry’s Such a Long Journey respond to and counteract hegemonic control over their body to achieve human recognition and become subjects of their own experience. I contextualize the ideas and theories of Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Gayatri Spivak, and Homi Bhabha in the postcolonial setting to discuss how the characters who are perceived to be abnormal, unfit, ‘perverts,’ or insane are never completely eliminated, ostracized, or silenced. Rather, they employ various strategies so that they can redefine what Butler calls bodies that matter as well as ways of living, instead of being expelled or banished to an abject zone. This comparative study also discusses the ethics of transgressors and authority figures, given that the politics of resistance operate in a relational manner. It demonstrates how the selective and careful use of norms or ethics is instrumental in transforming subaltern others into subjects with a voice.

      • 한국성인여성의 대퇴심동맥과 대퇴회선 동맥에 대한 형태학적 연구

        손석주,김경용,이원복,김동창 중앙대학교 의과대학 의과학연구소 1988 中央醫大誌 Vol.13 No.3

In order to observe the origin and relation of deep femoral, medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries, the distance between the origin of deep femoral artery and the ligament was measured, and the patterns of ramification of the deep femoral and both circumflex arteries were identified in 76 thighs of 38 Korean female cadavers. 1. The deep femoral artily arose from 21 to 40mm below the inguinal ligament in 75% of sides. 2. The deep femoral artery arose from the posterior surface of the femoral artery in 47% of sides and from the posterolateral surface in 32%. 3. Type 4 of classifed type by Williams et al. was most common type(70%) in sides. In 34% of right sides and 5% left respectively, type 3 arose from femoral artery and type B in 5% ofsides. 4. A case of new type was noted, that is, the common stem for circumflex femoral artery arose from the deep femoral artery and the descending artery, usually a branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery arose from the femoral artery. 5. The only significant evidence of side predominance was type 4 in left side and type 3 in right.
