Vol.- No.22

The Tempest was one of Shakespeare`s last plays. The Tempest is a play with so many layers of meaning that no single interpretation can do it justice. One of the interpretations of The Tempest is the power politics. Because The Tempest is a play about power relation. It has a large vocabulary of power, relation such as conspiracy, treachery, betrayal, rebellion, deposition, authority, and usurpation. Especially Prospero exercises his absolute power on the island; All of the characters except Miranda and Ferdinand are preoccupied with the will to power. Shakespeare was concerned with problems of government, with the tensions between power and virtue. It is striking that all the characters are involved in this problem in one way or another. Prospero has absolute power. So he can control the destinies of all the people on the island and he seems to be using his power for benigh ends. But there are Anthonio and Sebastian`s treachery to depose Alonso and make Sebastian king of Naples. Stepano and Trinculo`s conspiracy with Caliban to depose Prospero and make Stepano king of the island. But Prospero handles the end like a master playwright, suddenly weaving together all the plotlines to bring about the denouement he desires. Shakespeare suggests that power must never operate out of fear, out of terrible vengeance which is destructive of all justice. Power must be used to liberate man from hate. Acting so power becomes pure justice and society ethical and human. The Tempest deals with sinfulness past and present, and that the conclusion is characterized by repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation. It seems to be a kind of struggle for power remains the same. Miranda and Ferdinand will be rulers in the future by marriage. Especially Ferdinand is conscious of his political position.

Vol.54 No.4

In general, Death of a Salesman is an indictment of the American capitalist system which values machines more highly than men. However, the protagonist, Willy, is not being efficiently sacrificed to business efficiency but has failed as a common man who has a false way of life compared to Charley`s. Charley, who is successful, is the exact antithesis of businessman Willy himself. The central conflict is the father-son conflict, but it is the presentation of Willy`s internal life which is the most striking feature of this play. There are three categories of culture in this play. First, culture includes physical aspects such as properties, setting, stockings, refrigerator and car etc. Second, culture is connected to behavior and life pattern such as Willy`s ostentatious attitude. Third, culture is interrelated to the thoughts and values of Willy and his family members. These three categories are interconnected in forming the characters` way of life. In conclusion, Willy is a common man who has self-delusions and false values. He has no sense of the right values which will lead him to become a right person.

Vol.24 No.1

Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest which is now widely recognized as one of the finest comedies in English has a perfect union of plot, character and style. One of the striking study is to interpret it in terms of cultural point of view. Culture is recognized as a complex and various social elements such as artifacts, behaviors, and values. In short culture is defined as a way of life. The cultural features of The Importance of Beings Earnest is closely connected with characters' way of life such as searching for materials, feigned name, and false value systems. It furnishes a good pretext for escaping responsibility in the guise of fulfilling one's responsibility to a fictitious younger brother. Bunburying means to invent a fictitious character, who can serve as a pretext for escaping social routine. Mistaken identity is associated with the mask of manners that comic characters tend to assume. They have no identities of their own. In this play identity is not a matter of authenticity or origin but surface, appearance, style. So The Importance of Being Earnest is centered on the name of Ernest which symbolized the comic drive toward stability and the life deception. In conclusion Wilde criticizes the conventions of his society by his witty dialogue which consisted of wild nonsense, paradox and invented logic. In a sense he is a rebel against Victorian life. So he seemed to be faithful to mirror his society through his play as a cultural text.

Vol.- No.33

Long Day`s Journey into Night is one of Eugene O`Neill`s famous plays. This play is simple in form. There is almost nothing that can be called a plot, only a series of incidents which prompt the characters to dig or retreat into their pasts. Much of the force of the play derives from the sense that artifice has been abandoned in favor of the naked truth. Throughout the play, the present and the past come together in search for the cause of the present misery. In a way, the main character of the play is the family itself. The Tyrone family is intertwined by anger and defensiveness, bitter accusations and counteraccusations by ambivalence, so they cannot escape from their family. The central addictive figure within the family is Mary Tyrone. One of the most controversial critical comments about much of Eugene O`Neill`s drama is centered around the cause of the Tyrones` conflicts. This paper argues that their cause is connected with culture as a way of life. If the play is considered as a culture text, it can be analyzed according to artifacts, behaviors, and concepts which constitute a value system. Viewed from such a cultural point of view, the behavior of the Tyrone family can be regarded as typical. What the Tyrones suffer has universal significance, and Eugene O`Neill dramatizes his vision of life through the Tyrone family.

Vol.23 No.1

CLT(Communicative Language Teaching) aims the development of language learner"s communicative competence, i.e. their ability to use linguistic knowledge of language appropriately in various social situations. For the achievement of this aim, CLT requires a considerable amount of exposure to target language and a learner-centered, communication-oriented language instruction based on learner"s language learning needs in a supportive and non-threatening classroom atmosphere. In such a atmosphere, learners are provided with more practice and experience in language used in real communication situations through the use of authentic materials. The activities learners are involved in offer them real roles, situations and real purposes to communicate. So CLT has evolved as the most prevailing approach in language teaching over the last 30 years.
But CLT has always remained as controversial issue in EFL contexts like Korea. In Korea the subject, teaching materials, activities and assessment of English education are wrong in terms of theory and characteristics of CLT. But the objectives of English education are appropriate.
So I suggest the following alternatives. Firstly, the ministry of education and human resources should change the EFL contexts into ESL ones and provide the appropriate and effective assessment instruments and method of CLT in the college entrance English exam. The lack of effective and efficient assessment instruments in CLT was important constraint in Korea.
Secondly, the researchers who major in the English education methodology should develop the appropriate teaching method and school curricula for applying CLT to Korean schools effectively.
Thirdly, EFL teachers in Korea should perceive their own deficiency in English competence, especially sociolinguistic and strategic competence and in the knowledge of target culture. The English teachers in middle and high schools and universities should improve their English ability to use effectively by their own efforts and in-service training. They should use the authentic materials in their classroom to improve learner"s English abilities.
Even though CLT is regarded as an innovation in language teaching methodology, if we don"t develop these kinds of alternatives successively CLT in Korea will not be successful.

Vol.- No.21

The play metaphor is common throughout Shakespeare``s work. The play metaphor is significant to understand the Shakespeare``s mysteriousness and to suggest the audience the thematic aspects and meaning of the play. Especially I deal with Hamlet in terms of the play metaphor. Because Hamlet is the tragedy dominated by the idea of the play in Shakespeare``s plays. There are many linguistic elements which express the play metaphor such as act, scene, play, show, etc. Among them the ``playa part`` is the most important aspect of linguistic play metaphor throughout Hamlet, Hamlet plays various roles. So there are so many varied Interpretations of Hamlet``s character. Second, the play within a play(dumb show, the Murder of Gonzago and fencing match) represents the relationship between the world of the play and the play of the world. Third, I deal with Hamlet in terms of illusion and reality. Then· illusion and reality cannot be distinguished separately. But the linguistic play metaphor, the. play within a play and illusion/reality are interrelated one another. The play metaphor is the best method which illuminates the relationship between life and stage which are reciprocal. Shakespeare sees the real world, the macrocosm through the play, the microcosm. I come to conclusion that we should always consider the relationship between the play and· human life. 1 think that the image of the world is considered as a stage metaphor.
