The research on Park Soo Keun’s Catalogue Raisonné targeted to find out the overall issues of his life and artworks. As the controversy over forgery has increased so far, the need for publication of the Catalog Raisonné has been raised, and Park Soo Keun's research was initiated as a priority research target. For this purpose, the researcher set main tasks such as analyzing the amount and whole artworks by Park Soo Keun, showing the title and work year, documentary materials and exhibition histories, ownership histories, preparation of the author’s chronicle. It took two years and a half for the research. The research method consisted of a literature search, a visit to the collection, expert consulting, and an advisory meeting composed of artworks Authenticators. As a result of the research, the number of works was found to be 442 in total, It was the first case to estimate the amount of the works via systematic research. Secondly, His private exhibition, which was known to be ‘Osan Air Force Base’, was found to be actually ‘Yongsan SAC Library’. Thirdly, the research found the photo album scrapped by the author himself and thereby recovered the original title, whereas the provisional title had been used for convenience’s sake. I hope there would be more active discussions on the paintings by Park Soo Keun in the future, taking the opportunity of this study. 본 논문은 박수근과 그의 작품에 관한 객관적인 정보자료들을 수집, 분석함으로써 학술적으로 중요한기록정보들을 목록화하고 진위를 둘러싼 논란을 최소화하자는 취지로 집필되었다. 그간 미술계에서박수근, 이중섭 등 주요 작가들을 둘러싸고 위작논란이 잦아짐에 따라 한 예술가의 주요한 모든 정보를 담고 있는 카탈로그 레조네 발간의 필요성이 제기되었고 우선적인 조사대상으로 박수근 연구에 착수하게 되었다. 이 논문은 박수근 연구조사를 통해 발굴된 자료를 기초로 작성되었다. 연구범위는 그의 생애와 작품 전반에 걸쳐 이루어졌으며, 이를 위해 그의 전작(全作)의 규모와 작품 도상의 분석, 작품의 제목과 제작년도의 표기, 문헌자료와 전시이력, 소장이력 파악, 작가연보 작성을 주요 과제로연구조사를 진행하였다. 연구 방법으로는 문헌조사, 작품실견을 위한 소장처 답사, 전문가 컨설팅, 관계자 인터뷰, 미술품 감정 자문회의 등의 방법을 밟았다. 작품 실견은 국공립미술관과 사립미술관, 개인 소장가, 한국미술품감정평가원 의뢰작 등으로 이루어졌으며 이때 작품크기, 재료, 특이점 등을 파악하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째 연구를 시작할 무렵 기존의 도록과 책자에 수록된 유화작품은 모두 338점에 불과했으나, 조사 결과 연구조사 종료일 기준 총 442점으로 집계되었다. 그동안 몇몇 연구가들의주장은 있었으나 처음으로 체계적인 연구조사로 유화의 전체 규모를 밝혔다. 둘째 ‘오산공군기지’로알려진 그의 개인전 개최지가 실제로는 ‘용산 미군사령부 도서관’에서 열렸다는 점을 확인하였고, 셋째 그간에는 전시 때마다 편의적으로 사용해온 작품 타이틀을 생전에 작가가 스크랩한 작품사진앨범을 찾게 됨에 따라 원래 이름을 되찾았다. 이 연구를 계기로 박수근의 회화에 관한 논의가 활발해지고작품 진위 판별에 유익한 정보를 제공할 수 있게 되기를 기대한다.

The current research on Park mostly focuses on local colour, nativity, and nationality. Even though he passed away over fifty years ago, his painting could not be fully understood apart from his faith, especially when one considers his devotion to Christianity. This perspective stems from his deeply embedded belief that the Bible is the only key to understand the world and the people. Francis A. Schaeffer once said “Christian art is the expression of the whole life of the whole person as a Christian.” Likewise, separating the artist’s emotions and religion from his paintings are not appropriate if one wants to fully understand the work. This paper examines his religious beliefs exploring three categories: Togetherness, a downward movement, and piligram. Each category explains how his painting style is different from other artists with Park’s main paintings. Park once prayed that he would serve the people rather than being served by the people. His prayer reveals what he believed to be his calling from God. During the period when painting the church or the bible is the only way of showing the artist’s Christianity, Park takes his own artistic attitude which corresponds to a Christian worldview. He found that he could not separate his art from his faith. This paper explores the way Park successfully united his faith with his art, and his life with his faith. 본 논문의 목적은 박수근 회화 속에 나타난 기독교적 정신을 살펴보는 데에 있다. 굳이 그의 회화를 재조명하려고 한 것은 그의 명성에 비해 신앙적 부분이 충분히 밝혀지지 않았다는 판단에서이다. 북한에서의 핍박과 월남, 독학과 어려운 여건 속에서도 그는 그리스도인으로서의 정체성을 잃지 않았으며 그의 이러한 신앙은 고스란히 작품 속에 투영되었다. 그런데 박수근의 작품 연구가 기독교적 관점에 기초하는 대신에 ‘향토성’과 ‘소박함’, ‘민족미’ 등의 범주에서 벗어나지 못하고 있는 것은 아쉬운 일이다. 이러한 담론들이 박수근의 회화에서 차지하는 비중을 인정하더라도 전적으로 이것에 의존한다고 보기는 어려운 일이다. 박수근의 작품의 기저에는 그의 신앙체계, 즉 세상과 인간을 이해하는 해석적 열쇠가 성경에 있다고 믿는 기독교신앙이 자리 잡고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 그가 구현해고자 했던 기독교의 정신을 ‘함께함’, ‘하향성’, 그리고 ‘인생행로’로 나누어 각각 살펴보았다. ‘함께함’은 우리 사회의 구성원을 하나의 공동체로 바라보았다는 것을, ‘하향성’은 타자를 애정 어린 눈빛으로 조망했음을, ‘인생행로’는 ‘귀로’로 상징되는 본향에의 의지와 그에 대한 갈망을 각각의 작품 사 례를 통해 알아보았다. 이런 논의를 통해 박수근이 어떻게 기독교적인 관점을 예술작품으로 승화시키는 데에 성공했는지 살펴보았다. 교회를 그리거나 성경책을 그리는 것을 기독교 미술로 알고 있던 시절에 박수근은 기독교세계관에 부합하는 예술적 태도가 무엇인지 보여주었다. 그는 고통 받는 사람들에 주목하면서 하늘로의 상승(ascending)이 아닌 관통(inbreaking)으로 그리스도인다운 예술을 발전시켰다. 본 논문에서는 박수근을 신앙과 예술, 삶과 신앙의 고리를 촘촘히 연결시킨 기독교 예술가의 모델로 삼아 그의 작품세계를 고찰하였다.
