임진왜란 최대의 전투였던 제2차 진주성 전투에서 진주 관군ㆍ의병 등 약 4천~5천8백여 명(추정)이 9만3천여 명의 왜군과 맞서 9일 동안 사투를 벌인 끝에 결국 모두 전사하였고, 전투에 대한 기록은 매우 적다. 그러나 『선조실록』 등과 같은 관련 사료를 살펴보면, 당시의 전투장면들이 증언한 사람들이 없었음에도 불구하고 자세히 묘사되어 있었고, 특히 진주목사에 대한 평가가 너무나도 부정적으로 기록되어 있었다. 이러한 기록에 의문을 가지게 되어 총 4개의 의문점을 도출, 당시의 실상을 추론해 보고자 하였다. 당시 기록들을 살펴본 결과 백사 이항복이 8년 뒤에 남해안을 순시하면서 지은 傳(지어낸 이야기)인 『오성일기』 에 제2차 진주성 전투내용이 들어있었다. 그 내용을 보면 너무나 구체적으로 전투상황을 묘사하고 있었고, 특히 의병장 김천일 등은 전투의 주역으로, 진주목사 서예원은 심하게 폄훼하고 있었다. 그런데 사료 비교 과정에서 이 『오성일기』의 2차 진주성 전투내용이 원문 그대로 『선조실록』 무진조에 수록된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그 이유를 추정해 보면 ① 당시 『오성일기』가 여러 문집에 인용되다 보니 실록청에서 그 내용을 어떤 의도 없이 그대로 수록하였거나, 또는 ② 당파 간의 당쟁이 극심했던 시대임을 고려할 때 실록청에서 어떤 정치적 목적을 가지고 남인인 서예원을 비하한 『오성일기』내용을 그대로 실록에 실은 것으로 추정할 수도 있고. ③ 너무나도 비극적인 패전의 책임은 실질적으로 외부 지원을 하지 않은 왕과 조정의 책임인데, 이 책임을 진주목사 서예원에게 씌우기 위해 그렇게 한 것으로 추정할 수 있었다. 결론적으로 여러 사료들을 분석한 결과 ③의 가능성이 가장 높은 것으로 평가하였다. 그러나 일본 측 기록 『음덕태평기』 등에서 왜군은 서예원을 『대장목사』라고 칭하고 있었고, 그는 최후까지 싸우다가 전사한 것으로 기록하고 있었다. 이 전투는 호남을 지키기 위해 관군들과 의병들이 죽음을 각오하고 협력하여 싸운 전사에서 찾아보기 힘든 가장 치열한 전투였고, 왜군은 전투의 피해가 너무 커서 전라도로 진출하지 못하고 부산으로 철수하였다. 객관적으로 볼 때 이 전투는 실질적으로 승리한 전투이고 그 주역은 1차 진주성 전투를 승리로 이끌었던 진주 관군이다. 당시에 그들에 대해 여러 가지 이유로 포증은 못했더라도 더 이상 그들이 폄훼 되어서는 안될 것이다. 그리고 당시 진주목사와 진주 관군들, 그리고 김천일 등 의병들이 보여준 불굴의 정신력은 오늘을 살아가는 대한민국 국민과 국군들에게 귀감이 되어야 한다. In the second battle of Jinjuseong, about 4,000-5,800 people, including Jinjuseong main army and volunteer soldiers, fought against 93,000 Japanese troops for 9 days, and eventually all were killed. But the remaining records of the battle are very few. However, historical records such as Annals of Seonjo depicted the battle scenes rather in detail without any data source, and the evaluation of Seo Ye-won, Jinju Province Governor, who was the commander at the time, was done very negatively. Through interrogative research approach at these records, we have drawn a total of four questions about the 2nd battle of Jinjuseong. The 2<sup>nd</sup> Battle of Jinjuseong record in the Annals had been known to have been adapted from diverse historical resources, one of which was the Oseong Ilgi. It was a fictitious story that Seo-in, Baeksa Lee Hang-bok wrote while patrolling the southern coastal area eight years after the battle. According to the detailed battle scene in the Ilgi, Seo-in leaders of the volunteer soldiers, such as Kim Cheon-il, etc. were mainly the main heroes of the battle, while Seo Ye-won, Jinju Province Governor, was severely degraded. Knowing that the 2nd Battle of Jinjuseong record in Oseong Ilgi was almost copied in the Mujin-jo of Annals of Seonjo as it was., we could presume the following possible reasons. First, since the Oseong Ilgi was cited in various writings, the battle scene also was recorded in the Annals without any intention in the Sillokcheong (Annals office). Secondly, considering that the party hegemony between the factions was severe, it can be assumed that the contents of the Oseong Ilgi were put in the Annals for political reasons. Thirdly, assuming that the king and the court were actually responsible for the tragic defeat of the Jinjuseong battle for their having failed to provide external support. presumably they needed someone to pass the buck of failure. In the Japanese record EumDeoktaepyung-gi, the Japanese military referred to Seo Ye-won as “Captain Warrior,” and Seo Ye-won was recorded as having been killed with the vice governor Seong Soo-kyung fighting until his death. The 2nd battle of Jinjuseong was the most fierce battle that is hard to find in the war history where main army and volunteer soldiers fought together until death to protect Honam region. Close study on the historical records of this battle showed us that Jinjuseong army officials who led the first battle to victory contributed to the battle of the 2nd Jinjuseong battle. The indomitable courage shown by Jinju Province Governor, his army, and volunteer soldiers should serve as a role model for the Korean people and Korean armed forces living today.
