Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the recent changes in the clinicopathologic features of prostate cancer in Korea and to compare these features with those of Western populations. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 1582 men undergoing radical prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer between 1995 and 2007 at 10 institutions in Korea for comparison with Western studies. The patients were divided into two groups in order to evaluate the recent clinicopathological changes in prostate cancer: Group 1 had surgery between 1995 and 2003 (n=280) and Group 2 had surgery between 2004 and 2007 (n=1302). The mean follow-up period was 24 months. Results: Group 1 had a higher prostate-specific antigen level than Group 2 (10.0 ng/mL vs. 7.5 ng/mL, respectively;p<0.001) and a lower proportion of biopsy Gleason scores ≤6 (35.0% vs. 48.1%, respectively; p<0.001). The proportion of patients with clinical T1 stage was higher in Group 2 than in Group 1. Group 1 had a lower proportion of organ-confined disease (59.6% vs. 68.6%; p<0.001) and a lower proportion of Gleason scores ≤6 (21.3% vs. 33.0%; p<0.001), compared to Group 2. However, the relatively higher proportion of pathologic Gleason scores ≤6 in Group 2 was still lower than those of Western men, even though the proportion of organ-confined disease reached to that of Western series. Conclusion: Korean men with prostate cancer currently present better clinicopathologic parameters. However, in comparison, Korean men still show relatively worse pathologic Gleason scores than Western men.

Objectives : To determine the prevalence of prostatitis symptoms in the general population by questionnaire survey and to measure the effect of prostatitis symptoms on quality of life(QOL). Materials & Methods : A cross sectional community-based epidemiologic study was performed on 2,034 men, living in the Seoul metropolitan area using stepwise random sampling. Out of 2,034 interviewees, 1,356 men who were older than 40 and provided sufficient information were selected for this study. The questionnaires were completed by well trained interviewers. Contents of the questionnaires included demographic data, the Prostatitis Symptom Index(PSI), the International Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS), a general health questionnaire section and a sexual health questionnaire section. The PSI was composed of a sum of the scores from three questions about dysuria, penile pain and perineal pain and it ranged 0 to 12. Incidence of prostatitis symptoms was defined by a score of 4 or more and the reference group was defined as consisting of those with a score of 3 or less. The rate of incidence of prostatitis symptoms was assessed according to age and the difference of QOL between the prostatitis symptoms group and the reference group. Results : The overall positive rate of prostatitis symptoms measured by the PSI, in men older than 40, living in the Seoul metropolitan area, was 4.5%(61/1,356), adjusted to 4.8% by the relative proportion of this age group in the general population of the Seoul metropolitan area as compared to Korea and the World. The proportion of the group with prostatitis symptoms assessed by the PSI did not increase with age although the proportion of participants with moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) did increase with age. The group with prostatitis symptoms suffered from a much greater incidence of LUTS compared to the reference group (p<0.05). The QOL scores of the IPSS, and the general health and sexual health status of the group with prostatitis symptoms, were worse than those of the reference group.(p<0.05). Conclusions : The positive rate of prostatitis symptoms in men older than 40, living in the Seoul metropolitan area, was 4.8% and it didn't increase with age. The general QOL of the group with prostatitis symptoms was much worse than that of the reference group.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to report establishment of the 1st Web-based database (DB) system to collect renal cell carcinoma (RCC) data in Korea. Materials and Methods: The new Web-based DB system was established to collect basic demographic and clinicopahtological characteristics of a large cohort of patients with RCC in Korea. Data from a total of 6,849 patients were collected from 8 tertiary care hospitals that agreed to participate in organizing the Korean Renal Cell Carcinoma (KORCC) study group as of 1 July 2015. Basic demographic and clinicopathological characteristics were collected. The data of patients who underwent surgical treatments were analyzed to characterize Korean RCC. Results: We established the 1st Web-based DB of Korean RCC, a database comprising renal mass management cases from multiple centers in Korea. The data of 5,281 patients who underwent surgical management (mean follow-up, 32 months) were analyzed. The most common symptom was incidentally detected renal mass (76.9%). Clinical T1a was the most common (54.3%) stage and mean tumor size was 4.8±4.2 cm. Radical nephrectomy accounted for 62.7% of cases and an open approach was used in 50.7% and 52.2% of radical and partial nephrectomies, respectively. The 5-year overall, cancer-specific and recurrence-free survival rates were 88.1%, 92.2%, and 88.0%, respectively. Conclusions: We report the 1st establishment of a Web-based DB system to collect RCC data in Korea. This DB system will provide a solid basis for the characterization of Korean RCC.
