In this review, we explored the fabrication and application of various metallic nanostructures that support localized surface plasmons. Principles and unique characteristics for individual nanopatterning technologies were demonstrated and relevant discussion focused on the process cost, throughput, and possibilities of large-area patterning and mass production. As a potential use of the nanoscale plasmonic structures, several applications such as plasmonic light sources, photovoltaic devices, and localized surface plasmon resonance biosensors were investigated. In conclusion, true realization of such promising applications could be accomplished through an advance in nanofabrication techniques, together with a better understanding of the underlying fundamentals and a greater collaboration in a variety of fields.
Development of Nanostructured Plasmonic Substrates for Enhanced Optical Biosensing
변경민 한국광학회 2010 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.14 No.2
Plasmonic-based biosensing technologies have been successfully commercialized and applied for monitoring various biomolecular interactions occurring at a sensor surface. In particular, the recent advances in nanofabrication methods and nanoparticle syntheses provide a new route to overcome the limitations of a conventional surface plasmon resonance biosensor, such as detection limit, sensitivity, selectivity, and throughput. In this paper, optical and physical properties of plasmonic nanostructures and their contributions to a realization of enhanced optical detection platforms are reviewed. Following vast surveys of the exploitation of metallic nanostructures supporting localized field enhancement, we will propose an outlook for future directions associated with a development of new types of plasmonic sensing substrates.
Two Cases of Caseous Calcification of the Mitral Annulus

Caseous mitral annular calcification describes a heavy calcification of the mitral annulus with central liquefaction. This rare variant of mitral annular calcification may resemble an intracardiac tumor, abscess, vegetation, or thrombus, a resemblance that often leads to unnecessary surgery. Typical echocardiographic findings include a large, round, bright echogenic mass with a central echolucent area. It is known to have a benign clinical outcome, and it is thus managed conservatively. Because this entity is not well known and has only rarely been described, we report two cases of mitral annular calcification encountered at our institution. The first patient was an elderly woman with exertional dyspnea who was found to have a solitary pulmonary nodule on plain chest radiography. This was determined to represent caseous calcification of the mitral annulus. The other patient was an elderly woman who had a history of cerebral embolic infarction. She did not have an intracardiac thrombus, but she did have caseous mitral annular calcification. Both patients were managed conservatively. Since in vitro neural recording and imaging applications based on a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique have expanded dramatically in recent years, cytotoxicity assessment to ensure the biosafety and biocompatibility for those applications is crucial. Here, we report the cytotoxicity of the SPR substrate incorporating a flint glass whose refractive index is larger than that of a conventional crown glass. A high refractive index glass substrate is essential in neural signal detection due to the advantages such as high sensitivity and wide dynamic range. From experimental data using primary hippocampal neurons, it is found that a lead-based flint glass is not appropriate as a neural recording template although the neuron cells are not directly attached to the toxic glass. We also demonstrate that the adhesion layer between the glass substrate and the gold film plays an important role in achieving the substrate stability and the cell viability.

A 27-year-old female visited outpatient clinic for the evaluation of palpitation and dyspnea on exertion. Echocardiographic examination including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography revealed coarctation of aorta, bicuspid aortic valve, mitral valve prolapse, and sealed-up ventricular septal defect. Further evaluation with computed tomography angiography revealed another combined congenital anomaly of left isomerism with polysplenism and interrupted inferior vena cava and pulmonary embolism with deep vein thrombosis. After corrective surgery for the coarctation, she received anticoagulation therapy for the treatment and the secondary prevention of pulmonary embolism.

We investigated the correlation between the localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and the sensitivity in surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors with periodic metallic nanostructures. The SPR signal can be significantly amplified by the localized adsorption of target analytes that overlap with the local enhanced fields. The goal of this paper is to numerically explore the sensitivity characteristics as a result of the interactions between the LSPs and the target localization.
