        기준위치가설에 의한 EFL 성인학습자들의 WH-구조 운용

        This paper examines the question of whether the order of the left peripheral elements causes difficulties in EFL adult learners’ using WH-structures. Furthermore, it suggests a method to solve the problem by applying A'-chain (which is a chain linking an s-selection to a criterial position) based on the Criterial Hypothesis (Rizzi (1997, 2004a, 2004b)). To justify the suggestion, the survey targeted 81 EFL adult learners. The results indicate that the subjects have difficulties in using grammatical structures which include wh-elements, focus- elements, and topic-elements in the leftmost edge of the sentence. It has been identified that the fundamental reason for making the difficulties is due to the different way to operate the left peripheral elements between Korean and English. To tackle this challenge, this paper suggests that EFL adult learners should recognize the order of operating the left peripheral elements (Top-WH-(Top)-Foc) and apply the order of them to build the wh-structures in terms of the concept that the standard of the operation is wh-movement which is always preceding the focus and topic movement.

        Korean EFL Learners' Sensitivity to Scrambling Effect in Using English Wh-arguments and Wh-adjuncts

        This study will try to investigate how much Korean EFL learners recognize English wh-arguments and wh-adjuncts and how they use the two types of wh-words. To account for the two questions, this study will adopt the notions of scope bearing elements and scrambling effects. Although both wh-phrases play roles as interrogatives, it is considered that wh-adjuncts are distinct from the English wh-arguments with regard to the level of movement and the way for operation. To verify the discrepancy between both, this study will explore the use of English wh-arguments and wh-adjuncts by the Korean EFL learners through two types of grammaticality judgement tests. On the bases of the results, this study will show the followings; Korean EFL learners are insensitive to the scope bearing elements when they use wh-arguments and wh-adjuncts of English and even Korean, in particular, in using wh-adjuncts. Along with this finding, we suggest that their insensitivity to the scope bearing elements is resulted from the fact that their L1 adopts scrambling instead of considering subjacency effects or intervention effects, while constructing wh-questions. What is more significantly considered on the bases of these results is that the other EFL learners who have wh-in-situ languages might also be predicted to have the same results as in those of the Korean EFL learners.

        Accounting for the Misuse of English Articles by Korean EFL Learners

        This paper will investigate the factors that lead Korean EFL learners to the even under the context that has the specificity and avoid their article use. To proceed this investigation, this study will explore the distinction between English article system and Korean substitutes, based on Trenkic’s (2007) Syntactic Misanalysis Account (SMA), in which the English articles are analyzed as adjectives by L2 learners of article-less L1. This study will assume that the article choices of EFL learners are not interfered by a semantic and UG-determined syntactic factor, but the Korean demonstratives are only transferred to their English article choices. To confirm the assumption, this study will conduct the survey of Korean EFL learners’ tendency in using the English articles, who are 226 students of age 17 grouped by their English proficiency. As a result, this study will show the findings: 1) that the Korean EFL learners’ overuse of the and their avoidance of using articles come from the fact that the English articles belong to the functional category without semantic meaning and are syntactically driven unlike Korean demonstratives. 2) that the choice of English articles associates referential expression of definiteness to the perceptible referent and the expression of indefiniteness to the unidentifiable referent, or avoids their English article choices due to the transfer of L1 demonstratives.

        The Choice of English Articles Patternized in Korean Adult EFL Learners

        This paper explores the choice of articles by two groups of Korean adult EFL learners divided according to their proficiency of the English language. On the basis of the experimental studies, it is postulated that Korean adult EFL learners systematically access to universal semantic features such as definiteness, specificity, and speaker’s knowledge under the context which is known or unknown to speakers (Chaudron & Parker 1990). The results of the experiments demonstrate that Korean adult learners misuse a with [+definite, -specific] features under no knowledge between the speakers, which results in patternized errors. The results also show that they make overuse of a with [+definite] and [+specific] features within no scope of the context. In particular, advanced learners prefer to make use of the with [-definite] and [+specific] features within no scope of the context. Besides, unlike female learners, male learners are inclined to choose no-article with [-specific] feature under no scope of the context. The findings of this study show further evidence that their choice of the English article is not instantiated in L1 or L2, but is guided by UG.

        Factors for Parsing Relative Clauses by EFL Korean Adult Speakers

(NRF-2012S1A5A2A03034006)** First author: Sang-Hee Bae, Corresponding author: Sung-Hun KimClahsen and Felser (2006: 32) proposed that the syntactic representations L2 learners compute for comprehension are quite different for those of L1 learners. such as the relative clause attachment following a complex of Determiner Phrases (DPs). Previous studies (Ha, 2005; Han, 2012; Kim, 2010) have displayed that EFL Korean speakers prefer high attachment (HA) in parsing relative clauses (RCs) which are explained through the Tuning Hypothesis (Mitchell & Cuetos, 1991; Cuetos, Mitchell & Corley, 1996; Brysbaert & Mitchell, 1996; Mitchell, Brysbaert, Grondelaers & Swanepoel, 2000). This study conducted an experiment in which 130 EFL Korean adult speakers were examined with three types of judgement tasks. The results of the study convincingly demonstrated that, although EFL Korean adult speakers showed preferences and that the Tuning Hypothesis works, the results are different from the previous studies (Ha, 2005; Han, 2012; Kim, 2010). The participants differently parsed the target structure in the tuning direction. These results are attributed to gender and English proficiency rather than L1 transfer as found in the previous studies. In other words, it showed that the tendency of RC attachment by EFL Korean adult speakers has relevance to English proficiency and the gender of the participants. In addition, the result of parsing RC attachment can not always be that EFL Korean adult speakers prefer HA to LA and can be justified by the perspective of the tuning directionality.

        EFL 성인학습자의 어순화석화 완화전략: CP 국면활용

        Relaxing Fossilization of Word Order for Adult EFL Learners: Using CP Phase Sang-Hee Bae․Sung-Hun Kim (Dankook University) This paper will suggest Using CP Phase for Relaxing Fossilization of Word Order for Adult EFL Learners. Through the experiments, the fossilized respects have been reviewed first and then critical factors observed. As a result of them, significant factors have been determined through the syntactic differences between the first language and English. First of all, this paper uses CP Phase as a basic technique in terms of biolinguistics according to Berwick & Chomsky (2008). Namely, if the human language faculty can be reasoned to be a part of the organs and can be activated, adult EFL learners under the restriction of UG can expect to acquire English just as English native learners do as well by resetting parameters. Thus the issue of relaxing fossilized English word order is discussed by suggesting Relaxing Fossilization of Word Order for Adult EFL Learners by CP Phase.
