조선시대 포를 응용한 대학 학위예복 디자인 개발 : 전남대학교 학위예복을 중심으로
Academic dress is a formal academical clothing for those who hold a status of academic degree, entitling them the authority of the degree. The current academic dress used in the country follows the same form of Western academic dress and does not consider the national identity or the status and image of university, suggesting a new design of academic dress. Development of academic dress design has been carried out among universities that are located in the capital area and have high recognition for evaluation and the number of such universities has been gradually increased. In the design of academic dress suggested by a significant number of such universities, formative aesthetic of Korean traditional costume is integrated. This phenomenon is not limited to the country and major universities in foreign countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and China witness a growing demand for independent design with the image of their universities and home countries. The purpose of this study is to suggest academic dress design where the formative aesthetic of Korean traditional costume and the image of Chonnam National University are harmonized, as a tool of expression to introduce the identity of the Korean culture. For the method of study, literature study and empirical study were combined. Through literature study, the concept and history of domestic and foreign academic dress, the type and formative characteristics of Po in Joseon Dynasty were examined and the present conditions of wearing domestic academic dress was analyzed by using empirical study. The universities of target to analyze the present conditions of wearing academic dress are where design of the formative elements of traditional costume combined with the existing academic dress and include the College of Korean Classical Music of Chung-ang University, SungKyunKwan University, Korea University and Seoul National University. Three universities except for Chung-ang University use a common academic dress; only the College of Korean Classical Music of Chung-ang University wears a new design of academic dress. In the process of suggesting a new design of academic dress based on the result of the wearing condition survey, the problems of the existing academic dress and the need for new design were understood and a costume design process was introduced to suggest objective design results. In the costume design process, the need to develop academic dress design of Chonnam National University was raised and the academic dress used by Chonnam National University was examined. Based on this, the criteria for academic dress design were established and a work plan table and an illustration were suggested. The results of design suggested through this study are as follows: Design I adopts the form of a flight feather of Korean full-dress attire and the hem in the neckline of academic dress and the edge of robe with application of rectangular duri sleeve. To get rid of inconvenience due to a wide sleeve and promote activity, a slit was used in jindong line. The UI of our school was applied to express the image of Chonnam National University on academic hood and the academic hat was designed in the form of a hexagonal hat with attachment of a hat string based on the form of hat. Design II uses ceremonial robe feather, hem ornament, and triangular mu to express the neckline of academic dress and the edge of robe. Colors symbolizing Chonnam National University are applied to academic dress to express the image of the university and the academic hat is design with the application of the form of royal secret inspector's flower worn with angsam. Design III uses a straight line type feather of shimui and the slit and hem of a long crane-white gown in the neckline of academic robe and the ornament of hem. The logo and school color of Chonnam National University were applied to express the image of the university and the academic hat takes the same form as the existing one. Design IV uses the hem of a long crane-white gown and the Bangryeong form of eather of shimui. It adopts the hem of a long crane-white gown in the end of the edge sleeve of academic dress, cuffs of gown and Bangryeong feather of shimui in the neckline. The academic hat has a yellow line ornament in the same form as the existing one to give a sense of unity with the academic dress. The academic dress design suggested through the abovementioned results could be suggested as a practical approach for the modernization of the Korean traditional costume as the costume which expresses Korea's indigenous culture and image and there is a significance in that this is the first attempt to put the development of the academic dress design of Chonnam National University to practical use. 학위예복은 전공자로서의 권위를 인정받는 학위 수여식에서 착용하는 대학의 의례복식이다. 현재 국내에서 착용하고 있는 학위예복은 서구의 학위예복 형태를 그대로 따르고 있으며, 국가의 정체성이나 대학의 위상과 이미지가 고려되지 않은 것으로 새로운 디자인의 학위예복이 필요하다. 그동안 학위예복 디자인 개발은 수도권에 위치해 있고, 평가 인지도가 높은 대학 사이에서 진행되어 왔으며, 이와 같은 대학의 수도 점차 증가하고 있다. 이 중 상당수의 대학에서 제시된 학위예복 디자인에는 한국 전통복식의 조형미가 적용되어 있다. 이러한 현상은 국내에만 국한된 것이 아니며, 미국, 영국, 중국 등 국외 주요 대학에서도 자국과 해당 대학의 이미지가 표현된 독자적인 디자인에 대한 요구가 증가하고 있다. 이에 본 연구의 목적은 우리 문화의 정체성을 알리는 하나의 표현 수단으로써 한국복식의 조형미와 전남대학교의 이미지가 조화를 이룬 학위예복 디자인을 제시하는 것에 있다. 연구방법은 문헌연구와 실증연구를 병행하였다. 문헌연구를 통해 국내ㆍ외 학위예복의 개념과 역사, 조선시대 포의 종류와 조형적 특징에 대해 고찰하였고, 실증연구에 의해 국내 학위예복 착용실태를 분석하였다. 착용실태 분석의 대상 대학은 기존 학위예복에 전통복식의 조형적 요소가 응용된 디자인을 착용하고 있는 곳으로 중앙대학교 국악대학, 성균관대학교, 고려대학교, 서울대학교이다. 중앙대학교를 제외한 세 곳은 대학 전체에서 공통된 학위예복을 착용하고 있었으며, 중앙대학교는 국악대학에 한하여 새로운 디자인의 학위예복을 착용하고 있었다. 착용실태 조사 결과를 바탕으로 새로운 학위예복 디자인을 제시하는 과정에서 기존의 학위예복이 가진 문제점과 새로운 디자인의 필요성을 파악하고, 객관적인 디자인 결과가 제시될 수 있도록 의상디자인 프로세스를 도입하였다. 의상디자인 프로세스 과정에서 전남대학교의 학위예복 디자인 개발의 필요성 제기와 현재 전남대학교에서 착용하고 있는 학위예복을 조사하였다. 이를 토대로 학위예복 디자인의 기준을 설정하고 작품계획표와 일러스트레이션을 제시하였다. 본 연구과정을 통해 제시된 디자인의 결과는 다음과 같다. 디자인Ⅰ은 도포의 칼깃과 가선의 형태를 학위예복 네크라인과 학위가운의 가장자리에 응용하였고, 직사각형의 두리소매를 적용하였다. 넓은 소매로 인한 불편함을 해소하기 위해 진동선 부분에 트임을 주어 활동하기에 편리하도록 하였다. 또한 전남대학교의 이미지를 학위후드에 표현하기 위해 본교의 UI를 응용하였고, 갓의 형태를 응용하여 육각모에 갓끈이 부착된 형태로 학위모를 디자인하였다. 디자인Ⅱ는 앵삼의 단령깃, 가선장식, 삼각무를 응용하여 학위가운의 네크라인과 가운의 가장자리에 표현하였다. 또한 전남대학교의 이미지를 표현하기 위해 학위예복에 전남대학교를 상징하는 색을 적용하였고, 앵삼과 함께 착용하였던 어사화의 형태를 응용하여 학위모를 디자인하였다. 디자인Ⅲ은 심의의 직선형태 깃, 학창의의 트임과 가선을 학위가운의 네크라인과 가선 장식에 응용하였다. 또한 전남대학교의 이미지를 표현하기 위해 전남대학교의 로고와 교색을 적용하였고, 학위모는 기존의 형태와 같게 하였다. 디자인Ⅳ는 학창의의 가선과 심의의 방령형태의 깃을 응용한 디자인으로 학창의의 가선을 학위가운의 가장자리 소매 끝, 가운의 밑단, 심의의 방령깃을 네크라인에 응용하였다. 학위모는 기존의 것과 같은 형태에 학위가운과 통일감이 느껴지도록 황색 선 장식을 하였다. 이상의 연구 결과를 통해 제시된 학위예복 디자인은 한국 고유의 문화와 이미지가 표현된 복식으로써 한국 전통복식 현대화의 실제적인 방안으로 제안될 수 있을 것이며, 전남대학교 학위예복 디자인 개발의 실용화를 위한 첫 시도라는 점에서 의의가 있다고 생각된다.
