The chemical composition of reaction wood of Pinus densiflora was investigated. Reaction wood was classified into compression, opposite and sidewood. For the chemical characteristics of reaction wool with those of normal wood, about 40-year old pine tree was also collected and investigated. Not only the ash content, pH value but also the extractives amounts of cold water, hot water and g% NaOH were not statistically significant different between reaction wood and normal wood. However, opposite wood showed the highest amount of organic solvent (ethanol-hexane) extractives, while the compression wood the lowest. The contents of lignin and holocellulose in the opposite wood, side wood and normal wood were almost same, whileas the compression mood showed more lignin and less bolo-cellulose than the above mentioned wood. The carbohydrate composition was different from the tissue positioned in the reaction wood; the compression wood showed lower amount of glucose, mannose and xylose, higher amount of galactan than those of opposite, side and normal wood, while these latter three woods contained exactly the same composition of the carbohydrates.

Damage of powder-post beetle, Lyctus brunneus S. in the hardwoods was investigated, which are growing in southern part of Korean peninsular. Among the eightyeight species, 24 hardwoods were attacked by L. brunneus. Especially the woods of Celtis sinensis, Robinia pseudo accacia, Albizzia julibrissin, Gleditisia japonica M. var., Rhus sylvestris, Sapindus mukorossi and Meliosma myriantha were severely attacked(Tab. 1). Almost all the hardwoods susceptible against the attack of L. brunneus showed the positive color reaction with Lugol-reagent These hardwoods belonged to the ringporous or diffuse porous wood. Research work is necessary to determic the natural resistance of the most important timber species in Korea against this insect.
