        Coastally Trapped Waves over a Double Shelf Topography(III) : Forced Waves and Circulations Driven by Winds in the Yellow Sea

        The first order wave equation over a double shelf has wind stresses on both coastal boundaries and wind stress curl forcing across the shelf. In the Yellow Sea, the effect of wind stress curl can be neglected as a forcing of shelf waves. The decay distance of Kelvin waves is much greater than that of continental shelf waves so that Kelvin waves are transmitted nearly intact through the northern embayment. The numerical method of characteristics has been modified to accomodate wave propagation of opposite directions. Using a little more realistic coastline, the wave model hindcast has been improved for current velocity, but hardly for sea level. It means that Kelvin waves, which mainly determine sea levels, are affected little by the change of bottom slope. For a better hindcast of sea level, input energy of Kelvin waves transmitted from the East China Sea is needed. The basic structure of downwind flows along the coasts and upwind flows along the trough supports the seasonal circulations driven by monsoon winds in the Yellow Sea. 양향성 대륙붕에서 1차 파동방정식은 양 해안경계에서의 바람응력과, 대륙붕폭에 걸친 바람응력의 회전효과를 갖는다. 황해에서 바람응력 회전효과는 대륙붕파를 발생시키는 힘으로서 무시될 수 있다. 켈빈파는 대륙붕파보다 약화될 때까지의 거리가 매우 크기 때문에 황해 북쪽만(별)을 거의 약화되지 않고 통과할 수 있다. 파동특성을 따라 적분하는 수치방법은 반대방향으로 전파되는 파동을 수용하기 위해 조절되었다. 보다 실제와 가까운 해안선을 사용한 결과, 모델재생이 해류에서는 개선되었으나 해수면에서는 거의 개선되지 않았다. 이것은 해수면을 주로 결정하는 켈빈파가 해저지형의 변화에 영향을 극히 적게 받음을 의미한다 보다 개선된 해수면 재생을 위해서는 동지나 해에서 황해로 전파되는 켈빈파의 에너지를 알 필요가 있다. 해안을 따른 순풍류와 골을 따른 역풍류의 기본구조는 계절풍에 의해 발생하는 황해의 계절순환을 뒷받침한다.

        우리나라 근해의 장기적인 해수면변화

        Monthly mean sea levels from 103 tidal stations in Korea, Japan, and Russia are analyzed to study long-period sea level variations. Barometric adjustment are done for all the sea level data, using monthly air pressures at sea levels from meteorological stations near tidal stations. Seasonal variation is dominant in most of study area. It is the largest in the coasts along the Tsushima Current, and the smallest in the Russian coasts. The cross-correlations of seasonal variations are very high between the coasts along the Tsushima Current. In these marginal seas, seasonal variations seem to be related with the Tsushima Current. The phase of seasonal variations is generally getting late from south to north, and also from west to east. On the other hand, longer-period variations(longer than seasonal variation) have the largest amplitudes and the earliest phases in the coasts along the Pacific Ocean, which shows that they propagate from the Pacific Ocean. Shorter-period variations (shorter than seasonal variation) have generally lower cross correlations. Their values do not show any dictinct difference between areas, and show a common tendency that they are inversely proportional to distance. It implies that the shorter period waves are generated all over the study areas, and propagate in all the directions with faster dissipations. The trends of sea levels in the study area are generally negative in the coasts along the Pacific Ocean and positive in the other areas during the period of 1965 to 1985. By the trends, the mean volume transport between Cheju and Sasebo can be reduced by about 1 Sv during the period. The seasonal variation of volume transport obtained by sea level difference is about 2 Sv in the Korea Strait. The values are comparable to previous reports.

        해수면변화와 해저지형에 의한 난류수의 순환과 그 기원

        우리나라, 일본, 러시아 해역에서 관측된 조위관측자료에서 얻은 해수면의 장주기변화를 기상과의 관계로 분석해 본 결과, 기상의 효과는 해역에 따라 다르지만 전반적으로 해수면변화의 절반 정도를 설명해주는 것으로 나타났다. 해수운동에 의하여 발생하는 해수면변화는 대마해류역에서 가장 크며 대마해류의 영향을 적게 받는 곳일수록 작아져 해수면변화가 대마해류와 관계있음을 보여준다. 순압해수면 변화가 허용된 수치모델을 사용하여 해수면변화가 해수순환에 미치는 영향을 알아보았다. 그 결과 기본적인 해류형태는 Pang et al.(1993)에 의해 수행된 GCM(Semtner)모델의 결과와 같이 대만 주변해역에서 지균형조정을 거친 후 등수심선을 따라 대한해협으로 흐르지만, 순압해수면 변화의 허용에 의해 일부 해수가 황해의 중앙을 따라 황해로 유입된 후 서해안을 따라 남하하여 유출되는 황해의 기본순환형태가 나타났다. 이와함께 쿠로시오해류에 변화를 가할 때 순압해수면 변화에 의해 대륙붕에 장주기파동이 뚜렷해지며 이 파동으로 황해의 기본순환형태가 교란되어 해수가 서해안을 따라 북상하는 순환형태도 나타났다. 황해순환은 겨울철에는 기본순환형태가 북서계절풍에 의해 강화되고 여름철에는 파동에 의해 교란된 순환구조에 남동계절풍이 합세하는 것으로 보인다. 장주기파동에 의해 나타나는 다른 특징은 대마해류 기원해역의 변화 가능성이다. 지금까지 대마해류의 기원해역은 크게 큐슈섬 남서해역과 대만 주변해역으로 대립되어 왔다. 그러나 이 연구결과는 이들은 서로 위배되는 것이라기 보다는 대마해류 기원의 중요한 두 해역이며 장주기파동에 의해 한쪽이 강화되어 나타나는 것을 보인다. 쿠로시오해류의 변화에 의해 대만 주변해역에 가해진 파동은 강제파로 대한해협으로 전파되며 대한해협에 이르러 일본연안의 파동은 동해로 계속 전파되는 반면, 우리나라 연안의 파동은 해저지형에 의해 반사하게 된다. 반사된 파동은 자유파로 동중국해 대륙붕을 따라 남서방향으로 진행하며 북동방향으로 진행하는 강제파와 더불어 동중국해의 해수면변화를 결정하게 된다. The analysis of long-period sea level variations with tidal record data around Korea, Japan, and Russia shows that about half of the variations are due to atmospheric influences. The sea level variation by water movements is the largest in the coasts along the Tsushima Current, and becomes smaller in the distant areas. It suggests that the sea level varications are related with the Tsushima Current. The effect of sea level variations to ocean circulation has been studied with a numerical model allowing barotropic sea level fluctuations. Like the result with GCM (Semtner) model by Pang et al. (1993), the present model also shows that waters basically flow along isobaths over the East China Sea after geostrophic adjustment around Taiwan. However, barotropic sea level fluctuation makes the basic circulation in the Yellow Sea, which waters flow into the central Yellow Sea and out along the west coast of the Korean Peninsula. Besides this, barotropic sea level fluctuation makes long period waves over the shelf area as the Kuroshio varies. By the waves, the basic circulation in the Yellow Sea is disturbed, so that the flow pattern of oppositely flowing into the Yellow Sea along the west coast of the Korean Peninsula appears. In the Yellow Sea circulation, it seems that northwest winds strengthen the basic circulat ion in winter, and southeast winds strengthen the disturbed circulation in summer. Another point appeared by the long period wave is that the Tsushima Current possibly originates in different areas. There have been two opposing argues on the area in which the Tsushima Current originates: the southwest sea of Kyushu Island and the adjacent sea of Taiwan. Through this study, we found that both of them seem to be important areas for the origin of the Tsushima Current, and one of them is possibly strengthened by long period waves. The long period waves given by the variation of the Kuroshio Current in the adjacent sea of Taiwan propagate to the Korea Strait as forced waves. The wave continuously propagates to the East Sea through the eastern channel, but reflects in the western channel due to bottom topography. The reflected waves propagate southwestward along the East China Sea as free waves and determine the sea level variations with forced waves.

        On the Origin of the Tsushima Current ( Ⅰ ) : Barotropic Case

        The Tsushima Current has been known to branch out from the Kuroshio west of Kyushu and to flow north to the Korea Strait. Then, it has to flow across the isobaths and so needs some driving forces. As the forces, sea level difference between the Korea and Tsugaru Straits, Reynolds stress west of Kyushu and density differences have been suggested, In this paper, their roles have been numerically studied in the barotropic case. Model results show that the Tsushima Current is possible without any above force. The flows just follow isobaths over the East China Sea. They seem to be driven by their own dynamics without any external force. The mechanism is just like outflows from a gap. Model results also show that the flows in this area could be significantly affected by the external forces such as Reynolds Stress. Then the dynamics and flows in real ocean might be complicated. However, the barotropic study tells us that the Tsuahima Currents is basically driven by geostrophic adjustment.

        Coastally Trapped Waves over a Double Shelf Topography ( Ⅱ ) : Free Waves with Linear Topographies

        For a linear double shelf bottom topography as in the Yellow Sea, the dispersion relation of coastally trapped waves is derived for the general case including high-frequency and short waves and for the case of low-frequency and long waves. With linear bottom topography, the governing equation is Bessel`s equation for the latter case but Kummer`s equation for the former case. Hypergeometric Functions, which are the solutions of Kummer`s equation, are derived and converted to various special functions for the limiting cases. On a double shelf topography, the divergence effects of horizontal flow are important for the wave dynamics, irrespective of cross-shelf dimensions, while on a single shelf they are usually neglected when the cross-shelf dimension is much smaller than the Rossby deformation radius. The divergence effect allows the existence of Kelvin wave and reduces the phase speeds of continental shelf waves. Finally, the frictionless eigenfunctions are proved to be orthogonal.

        Coastally Trapped Waves over a Double Shelf Topography ( Ⅰ ) : Free Waves with Exponential Topography

        Double shelf topography allows the existence of two sets of waves propagating in opposite directors. In the case that two shelves are apart sufficiently enough, the solutions show two independent sets of waves which recover the single shelf waves. However, if the distance between two shelves is less than the Rossby deformation radius, the waves become dependent on the geometry of both shelves. Even over a double shelf topography, shelf waves propagate with the shallow water to the right in the Northern Hemisphere. The group velocity of shelf wave has the same direction as phase velocity in the long wave case, but the opposite direction in the short wave case. Each shelf mode has a zero group velocity at some intermediate value of wave length.

        제주도 중문 연안역의 물리해양환경에 대한 연구

        관광단지의 개발로 인해 생활오염수가 연안생태계에 영향을 미칠 가능성이 제기된 제주도 남쪽 중문 연안해역에 대해 1997년 7월부터 2000년 6월까지 매달 1회씩 관측하여 물리해양학적 특성을 조사하였다. 겨울철과 여름철의특성은 각각 $12{\sim}4$월과 $6{\sim}10$월에 나타나며 5월과 11월은 중간시기이다. 겨울철에는 수온이 약 14{\sim}16^{\circ}C$, 염분이 34${\sim}$34.7 psu로 대마난류수가 분포하며 여름에는 수온이 $15{\sim}27^{\circ}C$, 염분이 32${\sim}$34.3 psu로 저층에는 여전히 대마난류수가 분포하고 표층에는 저염의 양자강연안수가 영향을 미치고 있다. 양자강연안수의 영향이 특히 강한 때는 30 psu 이하가 나타나기도 한다. 성층은 연안에서는 거의 형성되지 않고 외양에서 약 20m층에서 6${\sim}$10월에 형성된다. 표층의 등온선과 등염분선의 분포는 때때로 해안선에 수직인 경향이 나타나며 이것은 정점1부근의 화력발전소와 정점3부근의 하천과 하수종말처리장의 영향으로 해석할 수 있다. 이번 관측으로는, 이들의 영향이 미칠 수 있는 최대한도는 수온이 300m 거리에서 약 $0.4^{\circ}C$이하, 염분이 30m 이내의 거리에서 약 0.1 psu이하로만 말 할 수 있다. 보다 정확한 영향을 파악하기 위해서는 관측정점들이 화력발전소와 하수종말처리장 배출구에 보다 가깝고 조밀해야 할 것이다. Physical oceanographic environments in the coastal sea of Chung-Moon located in the south coast of Cheju Island, Korea, where water pollutions by growing tourism complex possibly start to influence on the ecological system, are studied with hydrographic data observed monthly during July 1997 to June 2000. Winter and summer characteristics are shown in December to April and June to October, respectively, and transitional characteristics are shown in May and November. Waters show 14{\sim}16^{\circ}C$ and 34${\sim}$34.7 psu in winter and $15{\sim}27^{\circ}C$ and 32${\sim}$34.3 psu in summer. It tells that Tsushima water distributes in the whole column in winter and in the lower layer in summer, and Yangtze coastal water appears in the surface water in summer. When the influence of Yangtze coastal water is strong, salinities below 30psu are shown. Stratification is formed in the depth of about 20 m from June to October, so that it is not shown in the near shore stations, of which the depth is about10 m. Isotherms and isohalines sometimes tend to be perpendicular to the coast line in the surface, which seems to show influences from the steam power plant near St. 1 and the sewage disposal plant near St. 3. During the observation period, temperatures in St. 1 are a little higher than those in St. 2 and St. 3 except for a couple of months in summer and salinities in St. 3 are mostly a little lower than those in St. 1 and St. 2. Their effects seem to be no more than $0.4^{\circ}C$ in a distance of 300 m and no more than 0.1 psu within a distance of 30 m.

        여름철 제주 서부해역의 저염분수로 인한 음속변화와 음파채널 형성

        일반적으로 해양에서는 염분이 크게 변하지 않기 때문에 염분변화로 인한 음속변화는 무시할 수 있다. 그러나 제주 서부 해역에서는 매년 여름 저염분수의 영향으로 염분이 낮아지는 현상이 발생하여 표층 음속의 변화가 발생한다. 해양자료센터의 자료를 이용하여 제주 서부해역 세 정점에서의 30년(1980~2009) 자료 중 28 psu 이하의 저염분수가 발생한 해와 그렇지 않은 해의 수직분포를 각각 평균하여 음속분포를 구한 후에 수온과 염분에 의한 음속 변화를 분석하였다. 그 결과 저염분수 환경에서 염분에 의한 음속 변화는 표층에서 -5.36 m/s, 수심 10 m에서 -1.35 m/s 인 것으로 나타났다. 또한 표층 음속 감소로 인해 수심 약 5 m까지의 음속 수직 분포가 양(+)의 기울기를 갖게 되어 표층 염분채널이 형성되었으며 벨홉(Bellhop)모델을 이용한 음파전달 모의실험을 통해 이를 확인하였다. 30년간 표층채널 발생 동향을 분석한 결과 혼합층에서 압력에 의해 발생하는 정수채널은 9회, 저염분에 의해 발생하는 염분 채널은 5회로 나타났으며 염분 채널이 발생한 경우는 정수 채널에 비해 음선 임계각이 크게 나타나는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 2010년 8월 1일 제주 서부해역에 발생하였던 저염분수의 공간적 분포를 측정한 자료에서도 일부 정점에서 염분채널이 형성되었다. Salinity does not generally affect sound speed because it shows very small variations in the ocean. However, low salinity water appears in the Western Sea of Jeju Island every summer so that sound speed and sound propagation can change near sea surface. We calculated Sound Speed Profile (SSP) using vertical profiles of temperature and salinity, which were averaged over years of normal salinity and low salinity (<28 psu) from 30 years (1980~2009) at 3 sites of Korea Oceanographic Data Center (KODC). As a result, sound speed variation by low salinity alone was -5.36 m/s at sea surface and -1.35 m/s at 10m depth for low salinity environments. Gradient of SSP was positive down to 5 m depth due to decrease of sound speed near surface, leading formation of haline channel. Simulation of acoustic propagation using a ray model (Bellhop) confirmed the haline channel. Haline channel has formed 4 times while hydrostatic channel controlled by only pressure has formed 9 times for 30 years. The haline channel showed larger critical angles of rays than hydrostatic channel. Haline channel was also formed at some sites among 20 measurement sites in low salinity water mass which appeared on August $1^{st}$ 2010.

        수치모델을 이용한 고성만 양식 참굴의 연구 - 1 . 먹이가 참굴의 성장에 미치는 영향

        N/A Effects of available food on growth of commercially cultured Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas in Goseong Bay on the south coast were studied using a numerical model. Levels of total protein, carbohydrate and lipid in particulate organic matter in the water column as well as chlorophyll a concentration were determined for estimating total available food for oyster growth. Environmental parameters including water temperature, salinity and total suspended solid were also monitored for the model. Oyster growth was also monitored by means of measuring shell length and tissue wet weight increase on a monthly basis. Simulation results from the numerical model indicated that chlorophyll a is not a good representative of available food for the oysters in Goseong Bay. In contrast, available food in the water column measured by filtration of the organic particles and analyzed in terms of total lipids, carbohydrates and protein was well matched with simulated oyster growth in the Bay which is similar to observed growth. The model also suggested that oysters have relatively low retention efficiency of 50% or less. This result indicates that oysters in the bay utilize only a part of food particle available in the water column, as reported in other studies.
