Vol.58 No.-
This paper highlights a significant literary influence on Ham Seok-heon, whose pacifist beliefs were further developed through his reading of H. G. Wells. Famous as the author of The Time Machine, Wells published The Outline of History after World War I. Ham Seok-heon immersed himself in this book while he was studying at Osan School. This experience reflected his interest in history, and influenced his change of view on Christianity and the secularization of his pacifist ideals following the Korean War. Wells left behind numerous political writings which reveal a unique stance on the creation of a ‘socialist world state’ based on a ‘liberal-international organization’ such as the League of Nations. In Joseon in the 1920s, his world state theory had accepted as a name of reconstructionism. The two groups that facilitated the translation and propagation of Wells’ thinking were the Shinjinkai(Tokyo Teikokudaigaku) group, whose most iconic figure was Sano Manabu, and Civilizationists of Waseda University, represented by Ukida Kazutami. This paper focuses on the latter, and emphasizes the fact that Wells’ evolutionary gradualism, through which he envisioned a world state coming about through the development of internal societal capacities for collective solidarity, resonated with the intellectuals of the northwestern region of Korea. The Outline of History was written in intention to popularize cosmopolitanism, with the aim of promoting diversity in the cultural realm while marginalizing nationalist politics and overcoming cynical realpolitik. Wells, who saw elites as the fulcrum of his ideal world state, modified his thinking in light of his disappointment with the Paris Peace Conference and the League of Nations. While The Outline of History was an attempt to include colonized countries in his conception of the world state, he still saw the League as an authority that was responsible for guiding and overseeing the development of the colonized. About 40 years later, on the other side of the world, Ham Seok-heon regarded the Korean War and U.N. intervention in it as a sign from God of “the world uniting as one.” He was thus drawn to Wells’ writings, and gradually adapted and reconfigured his ideas about the world state, in this way assimilating it into his own philosophy. In the belief that all humans are peaceful by nature, Ham dreamt of a worldwide revolution that would enable society to break free from the hierarchical, gradualist framework established by Wells. The writings of Wells hailed from a few decades previously, but it was Ham’s anachronistic reading of his work that allowed him to become a unique figure in Korea’s intellectual history.
Vol.59 No.-
Cultural and academic discourse on ‘Korean’ is one of the prevalent cultural phenomena in the 1960s Korea. This paper notes a considerable qualitative change in the discourse on Korean in the 1960s, which occurred with the acceptance of Cold War behavioral science. Ko Young-bok, Choi Jae-seok, Hong Sung-jik and Jung Beom-mo are sociologists who have taken graduate courses after the end of the Korean War. Through concepts and methodologies of behavioral science such as personality, attitude and value orientation, they identified the mental structure of Koreans and tried to transform it. They criticized the former discourse on ‘reconstruction of national character’ as an unscientific discourse, and established a new strategy to make Koreans ‘worthy’ to engage liberal development. But, in fact, their attempts were continuation of the former discourse. Discourses on national character in 1960s were still influenced by the ethnicity study on Joseon, which had been produced during the colonial period. Firstly, I examined the critical intervention of Ko Young-bok in the national character discourse in 1960s. He sought to generalize the idea that national character is an acquired and changeable social structure. Secondly, I reviewed Choi Jae-seok’s The social character of Korean(1965). The gist of Choi’s research was that the personality and behavior of Korean can be made appropriate to liberal democracy through the transformation of the “family.” However, Choi was projecting too much of the typical repertoire of psychoanalytic diagnosis of the “enemy” which had been produced in the United States during World War II, into the analysis of Koreans. Thirdly, this paper deals with Hong Seung-jik's attitude survey research of 1,005 farmers, businessmen, and professors, A Survey of Korean Values(1969). His research assumed a rigid dichotomy of ‘tradition’ and ‘modern.’ But it is drawing attention as an attempt to refute the conventional and subjective prejudice about Korean through empirical research. Lastly, I briefly looked at Jeong Beom-mo’s pedagogical discussion about how to “create” Koreans as owners of a personality suitable for development. Now, the task of changing the personality of Koreans became ‘human engineering’ that requires professional knowledge of behavioral science. The discourse on ‘reconstruction of national character’, an indigenous discourse rooted in colonial experience, was transformed(continued) with the acceptance of Cold War behavioral science and the introduction of developmental timeview. The discourse on ‘reconstruction of national character’ remains unsolved, which calls for a blind eye to structural and institutional violence by taking issue with internal qualities.

This article examines the conventions dictating the cultural representation of the ‘youth’ in 1950s Korea and the conditions in which this took place, focusing on a series of discourses and forms of imagery that were hostile to the youth and students. As the Cold War situation in Korea strongly required the suppression of the possibility of people moving across the geographical/ ideological boundary between the two opposing camps, the ‘youth’, who were a symbol of modern mobility and unpredictability, became the group most closely associated with the figure of the ‘enemy’. The numerous young communist figures in postwar literature, in texts such as Descendants of Cain (1954) by Hwang Soon-Won, and A Story on Escaping from the North (1956) by Lim Ok-In, were central to the epistemological alteration of postwar Korea, as they helped to characterize the national divisions as the issues of education and the cultivation of moral character, rather than economic status(/class) or political ideology. Furthermore, several works of Lee Bum-sun and Sun Woo-hwi centered the Korean War on narratives of a young man’s betrayal of his parents and elders. Versions of these stories of the Korean War appeared in the context of the ‘Morality Discourse’(도의담론, 道義談論) which prevailed after the declaration of the armistice. Through an examination of the institutional formation of ‘Moral Education’(도의교육, 道義敎育) and the ‘Moral discourse’ of the intelligentsia, this paper argues that the conceptions of ‘morality’ and ‘education’ replaced the notion of ‘class’ in the attempt to overcome the epistemological crisis caused by the ‘international civil war’ that was the Korean War. These conditions underpinning the cultural representation of the era were the reason Oh Sang-won, a brilliant young postwar writer, portrayed young people as good and moral. The young people in his work do not violate the representational protocols of ‘moral youth’, as they side with their parents instead of displaying generational solidarity, and act on the basis of abstract reasoning which is diluted through the language of humanism. But sometimes, either obliquely or in the guise of mistakes, he portrays moments when the desires of young people who have been harmed by war and the state appear. In particular, “Conspiracy” (1957) depicts a young man who refuses the Cold War hostilities and escapes the young men’s association. This article ruminates over the meaning of this escape/rejection which was on the liminal point of the representation of the young, particularly in the work of Oh Sang-won, who was quickly forgotten after the April Revolution.

This article focused on the fact that communists were portrayed as youths in the cultural reproduction of South Korea during the Korean War. These numerous figurations of the young communist, which may have come from the simple fact that most of the military practitioners of People's Republic in the wartime were young, were eventually cemented into a conventional representation on the “enemy=youth”, combining with the actual impression of enemies such as decisiveness, violence, and stupidity. Even if the figuration of young communists could be connected to the Cold War epistemology that denies the historical legacy and indigenousness of the communist movement of the Modern Korea, it was the unique representation custom of South Korea made at the battlefield of the ‘hot war’. In particular, it was deeply related to South Korean intellectuals identifying themselves as a solemn patriarch or a mature man who got thorough his ideological wanderings. Therefore, reading novels published during Korean War focusing on the problematic figuration of the ‘enemy=youth’ is appropriate. While Yeom Sang- seop's A Shower and “The Morning of Liberation” claim the virtue and dignity of older people against the inexperience and ungentleness of the enemy, Park Young-joon's “A Partisan” represents the attempt to tame the “enemy=youth.” Lastly, this article highlighted several works of Bildungsroman published during the Korean War such as Choi Tae-eung's aprés-guerre and Jung Bi-seok's AejungMuhan that had double meaning of psychological warfare/the history of thought. Ironically the character as a stubborn anti-communist from the beginning do not allow itself the space for the growth. Therefore in the initiation novel and Bildungsroman of the Korean War most of the main characters represent the Submitted Soldier (귀순병), the Convert (전향자), and the Collaborator (부역자). This article conceptualized these works of Bildungsroman as ‘the Bildungsroman of anti-communism’. It refers to the Bildungsroman of the Korean War period in the narrow sense, but broadly, it refers to the way of thinking that give the meaning of ‘personal growth’ to the defection, surrender, conversion, embroidery, and the experience of war itself. When all South Koreans were asked to be reborn as stubborn anti-communists, the Bildungsroman of anti-communism responded to the task of turning anti-communism, which demand not just an external norms but a self- consciousness of spontaneity.

The goal of this paper is to examine the significance of Lee Bong-Boem’s recent books, Conversion, Pureness, Postwar, Engagement(Sungkyunkwan University Press, 2023) and Cultural Cold War in Korea(Sommyeong, 2023). The two books contain numerous papers that the author has submitted and have been widely cited on a variety of topics over a period of nearly 20 years. The former contains the achievements of cultural studies since 2000, ranging from the history of the media, the conversion sysytem, the debut system, the formation of literary field, and the history of customs. The latter includes recent research that expands the view to dimensions of the global cultural Cold War, including U.S. private foundation aid, the reception and circulation of Cold War texts, the formation of Cold War knowledge, and psychological warfare. All of these discussions are fundamental to the study of the institutional and material foundations of Korean culture and literature in the early Cold War era. In this paper, I focus on a few issues in particular, such as conversion, the reception and circulation of Cold War texts, propaganda and psychological warfare, and the social engagement of intellectuals, to summarize the relevant findings and clarify the challenges ahead. Regarding the conversion after the establishment of the ROK government, the author offers an institutional approach and a view of the dynamic reorganization of the cultural field, but I propose to go further and see the conversion as an event in the history of thought involving an epistemological shift. Meanwhile, a review of the reception and circulation of Cold War texts, in particular the chapters dealing with The God that Failed(1949), has been undertaken to consider the challenges ahead for the ‘1930s in the postwar period’. Finally, while the author’s work on psychological warfare provides a dense reconstruction of the formation and changes in South Korea’s psychological warfare strategy and apparatus, I point out that more work needs to be done on the processes and principles of internalization of Cold War epistemology. The author’s sense of realism, which runs through both books, is always a valuable reference point for literary researchers exploring the world of the represented and the written.
