The purpose of this study was to develop a computer-based inquiry activity to learn stimuli and response. The software to measure the reaction time can run on the Microsoft Windows operating system. With this computer program, various visual and auditory stimuli can be produced. Accurate reaction times can be instantly obtained simply by clicking mouse buttons or using a keyboard. The program contains an extra function that allows additional variables to be set. Using this function, students can perform their own experiments. Based on the developed software, computer-aided reaction time experiments were also developed. The developed experiments were related to three types of reaction time measurements: simple reaction time, discrimination reaction time and the reaction time when focusing on other ideas. 20 middle school students and 8 biology teachers tried the developed software and experiments. Most of them performed the suggested experiments effectively. Their opinions were reflected in the developed results.

The purpose of this study was aimed to investigate the elementary school pre-service teachers’ understanding and their misconceptions in the natural selection concept. 119 pre-service teachers participated and the Conceptual Inventory of Natural Selection(CINS) was used to assess their understandings. The results are as follows. First, it was found that the grade-based improvement in the understanding of the concept of natural selection by the elementary pre-service teachers was at a small effect level. Second, the participants had more difficulties to understand the genetics related natural selection concept than ecology related concepts. Third, as a result of analysis of the conceptual network of misconceptions, misconceptions related to heredity were more highly correlated with each other than the ecology-related conceptions. In particular, the misconceptions of teleological explanation on the origins of variation and insufficient understanding of the gradual change of the population were identified as the central misconceptions. In conclusion, The understanding of the natural selection of primary preschool teachers is hard to meet the required level to teach the scientific concept of evolution by natural selection. Therefore, various approaches are necessary to improve the teacher’s understanding of natural selection concepts.
