박준언(Jun-Eon Park) 한국외국어교육학회 2003 Foreign languages education Vol.10 No.3
In this paper, I explore issues in English for Specific Purposes with a view to stimulating research interest among Korean applied linguists. Discussions of the ESP issues are centered around ESP needs and genre analysis. First, various approaches to ESP needs analysis are accounted . for, Next, the issue of ESP genres is discussed in detail, such as genre analysis in general, classifications of ESP genres, and current research in three ESP genres, i.e., English for Business Purposes (EBP), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), and English for Legal Purposes (ELP). Finally, the relevance of the corpus linguistics approach to ESP research is pointed out.
K-pop 노랫말들의 언어 혼종: 영어 변이형들과 코드전환 사용
박준언 ( Jun Eon Park ) 이중언어학회 2015 이중언어학 Vol.61 No.-
This paper analyzed K-pop song texts in terms of language hybridization. The findings show that language hybridization proceeds in two ways: incorporating different varieties of English and code-switches between Korean and English. Different English varieties such as standard colloquial English, African American Vernacular English, and Koreanized English are used in K-pop song texts. Also, code-switches are the significant mode of language use in all the K-pop song texts analyzed for the research. K-pop lyrical texts maximize Korean and English bilingual resources to appeal not only to the local Korean audience but to the global fans. In the language hybridization processes, English varieties and Korean/English code-switches are utilized as effective resources in striking a balance between the locality and the globality of the K-pop songs. In recent years K-pop has obtained distinctive character by its active linguistic hybridization in the lyrics. This paper addresses the issue of matrix language assignment in the Korean/English bilingual code-switches in K-pop lyrics. A total of 242 lyrics were selected from the 14 K-pop groups that have gained popularity among the Korean youths. Analysis of the K-pop lyrics corpus reveals that the overall discourse is determined by the Korean language. Of the total 10,257 song lines selected for the analysis, Korean lines accounted for 58.5% (6,001), followed by English lines (25.3%: 2,597) and Korean/English code-switched ones (16.2%: 1,659). The Korean-dominated linguistic context in K-pop lyrics is claimed to have a strong bearing on the matrix language assignment of the code-switches in the lyrics. In most code-switching cases in the K-pop lyrics, matrix language was rather easily determined due to the structural disparity between Korean and English. (Soongsil University)
영어사용 국가들의 언어정책 고찰: - 영국,호주,남아프리카공화국을 중심으로 -

This paper introduces the language policies of three major English-speaking countries: Britain, Australia, and South Africa. Britain has shown varied attitudes toward the language use of ethnic minorities from the assimilationist viewpoint during the 1960s, to the multicultural one in the 1970s and 1980s, and to the current anti-racist one. The national demand on language policy in Australia was triggered by the rapid influx of non-white immigrants. The direction of her language policy has shifted from the focus on the multiculturalism in the earlier period to the current economically-motivated policy. Unlike the cases of Britain and Australia, the language policy of South Africa is codified in the new constitution. With the collapse of the previous notorious apartheid regime and the construction of new democratic political system, the country's language policy has focused on the balanced development of all major languages that have received the status of official national languages by the constitution.

Recently, Incheon, Busan, Gwangyang, Jeju Island have been designated as Free Economic Zones or a Special Self-governing Province by the Korean government. English is expected to emerge as a major medium of communication alongside Korean in these regions. This research aims at suggesting a workable model of immersion English education in elementary schools in the regions based on the surveys conducted to groups of people who have a stake in immersion education: elementary school teachers, elementary school students" parents, faculty at the colleges for elementary school teachers, and the students attending the colleges for elementary school teachers. The surveys consisted of six major categories: current elementary English education, language use patterns in those regions, introduction of immersion programs, teachers for immersion education, considerations for immersion education, and feasible model of immersion education. Discussions on each category are done in detail based on the analyses of the questionnaire items. Finally, suggestions for immersion English education in elementary schools in the regions are offered.

This paper reviewed the current situation of Korean as a foreign language(KFL) education in terms of major domains: government support system, KFL teaching institutes, curriculum and materials development, KEL education tot overseas ethnic-Koreans, KFL education for domestic multicultural families, KFL-related research, testing, etc. Considering the emergent status of KFL education in Korea and abroad, it is strongly advised that both researchers and practitioners maintain close cooperation to establish a theoretically valid and pedagogically well-tested KFL discipline. This paper overviews the research topics in the field of teaching languages for specific purposes. Of a multitude of issues related to language for specific purposes (LSP) research, this paper focuses on the central issues common to all LSP research: LSP needs analysis, LSP genre analysis, LSP register analysis, LSP teaching methods, and LSP assessments and evaluations. Each of the LSP research issues is examined in detail by discussing related theoretical and empirical studies. Considering the growing interest in LSP education in the field of teaching Korean as a foreign language in recent years, it is hoped that this paper can shed light on the research of teaching and learning Korean for specific purposes.
