Vol.12 No.2

In this case study, the brake line failure of air over hydraulic(AOH) brake system is described. AOH brake system is applied to commercial vehicles between 5 to 8 tons. It consists of a hydraulic system using compressed air and operates the air master to form hydraulic pressure to transfer braking power to the wheels. When the brake lines of the system applied to vehicles with high load capacity are damaged, the braking force of one shaft is lost, and the braking distance increases rapidly, leading to a big accident. Failure of the brake line occurs due to various causes such as road surface fragmentation, corrosion of the line, and aged deterioration of air brake hose. The braking force could be decreased even when a very small break in the form of a pin-hole occurs. However, it is difficult to find a part where the thickness of the line is thin due to stone pecking or corrosion generated in the pin-hole formed on the brake line located under the lower part of the vehicle by the sensory evaluation or the conventional braking force test. Accordingly, it is necessary to analyze the condition and cause of the failure of the brake line more precisely when the accident investigation of the heavy vehicles, and also to examine the necessity of the advanced test for the aged brake line.

Mule Bone Kills De Turkey: Hurston and Hughes’s Artistic Contention on Black Folk Comedy

Vol.56 No.6

Mule Bone (1931), Zora Neale Hurston’s collaboration with Langston Hughes, has been credited as the ‘first’ attempted by African Americans to create black folk comedy. The proposed research is driven from a question to the recent scholarship’s tacit consent on such historic importance imposed on the play. This paper suggests a possibility that De Turkey and De Law (1930), Hurston’s edition of the collaboration work, could be the truly first attempt in the tradition of American black folk comedy. By illuminating a series of historical moments in which Hurston first expressed her dream for writing a real black folk comedy that would be a really new departure in the African American drama, then collaborated with Hughes on the dream play project, and eventually quit the collaborationship due to artistic dispute with Hughes, this paper explains why Hughes edition Mule Bone came to remain ‘unfinished’ and, more importantly, fall short of Hurston’s original goal and expectation from the collaboration. On the other hand, this paper sheds light on the significance of often-ignored Hurston’s edition De Turkey and De Law by demonstrating how this play, compared to Mule Bone, fulfills her original idea of black folk comedy in terms of contents and themes compared with Mule Bone. Adding to the knowledge about little known behind story related to the Mule Bone controversy and the subsequent birth of the two different editions of the Hurston-Hushes collaboration project, supplementing the dearth of the related research with a critical comparison of the two editions, and discussing the validity of Hurston’s edition as the real sense of black folk comedy, this paper argues for the necessity of reconsidering the origin of the mentioned genre. This paper finally concludes that De Turkey and De Law, replacing Mule Bone, deserves a right to be truly the first American black folk comedy genre in the sense that it was completed and copyrighted three months earlier than Mule Bone and that, more importantly, it cherished the original aim and artistic vision of black folk comedy Hurston first planned and expected through the collaboration with Hughes.

1950s American Ideology Witch Hunt and Art Censorship: Case of Black Celebrity Actor Paul Robeson

Vol.54 No.-

The 1950s was a period of ‘Great Expectations’ for the United States, both politically and economically. Faced with a new phase of the world order called the Cold War, the US replaced Britain’s glory and position in the past and emerged as a representative and real power of Western Democracy. In addition, the 1950s was one of the longest periods of sustained economic growth in the US history. Accordingly, American citizens had a growing sense of pride that they ‘were’ the members of the world’s strongest and wealthiest nation. The 1950s is remembered as one of the best times in American history, and such optimistic sentiments were confirmed in the realms of reality as well as mass media of television dramas and magazines. On the other hand, American citizens turned into a silent generation insensitive to the problems in reality, and the United States turned to a conservative society dominated by the anti-Communist ideology of McCarthyism. In this regard, the 1950s America also tells a different story. This decade was the worst time for an American citizen Paul Robeson (1898-1976) who was a celebrity actor and activist. In the 1950s, this public figure met a reversal of fate especially in the face of the prevailing anti-Communist sentiment. His passport was cancelled, and this ‘American’ celebrity was classified as an ‘Un-American’ reactionary. This paper traces the case of racial and art censorship brought by American political ideology in the 1950s, focusing on the personal history of the African American artist Paul Robeson.

The resonance scattering of acoustic waves from thick cylindrical shells is analyzed for the case of an air-filled glass shell immersed in water. This is done by using the model of an elastic plate, and by calculating resonance frequencies, dispersion curves, and attenuations of circumferential waves. We also discuss some experimental results that deal with the backscattering of acoustic waves by cylindrical shells obtained by using short pulse excitation and Fourier spectroscopy analysis. Resonance spectra of backscattered signals show peaks corresponding to thickness resonances.

Vol.32 No.2

, In the 1960s, responding to a series of political and social concerns, a number of radical theatre groups appeared in USA with an intention to change society. Among them was the Bread and Puppet Theatre. In the manifesto of 1962, Bread and Puppet proclaimed its founding spirit and moto: art should be produced as response to life, as expression of what is shared with other, as out of felt need, for the sake of doing it. Accordingly, Bread and Puppet has been the most influential theatre of political radicalism, presenting itself in critical moments of US history, responding to life through theatrical experiments, and consequently acting out the needs for change. Bread and Puppet criticizes the imperialist tyranny of the ‘Big Brothers’ such as government, armed forces, capital, and politics, disclosing both the arrogance of warmongers and the despair of the victims. At the same time, Bread and Puppet’s artistic-political action suggests the necessity of change and corresponding direction that America and the global society should take. This study illuminates the significance of Bread and Puppet’s artistic practice as a way of responding to life, reflecting its agenda and maneuver so far. Particularly focusing on the 1991 performance Columbus: The New World Order, this study clarifies the uncomfortable truth of the ‘New World Oder’ Bread and Puppet calls people’s attention to, and its implications in terms of their artistic activism.

Vol.2 No.-

The use of dielectric measurements for monitoring the cure of fiber reinforced epoxy resin prepreg has been investigated. Measurements of dielectric constant and loss have been made at frequencies from 10 to 1000 KHz. The frequency dependence of the dielectric measurements has provided the basis for interpreting and understanding the signal in terms of dipolar and ionic phenomena. The results show that the dynamic dielectric analysis can be used to monitor and measure the viscosity, the state of the system, and the extent of the reaction as a function of time and temperature.
