This paper correlates the flexible multibody dynamics analysis for the performance of a full scale UH-60A rotor in lowspeed flight with the wind tunnel test. The UH-60A main rotor system is modeled using various multibody elements such as rigid bodies, nonlinear elastic beams, mechanical joints, and elastic spring/dampers. The freewake model is used to consider the effect of rotor wakes more elaborately in low-speed forward flight. Fair to good correlations of rotor performance such as figure of merit in hover, rotor power, propulsive force, and lift in low-speed forward flight are achieved with sweeps of the thrust, rotor shaft tilting angle, and advance ratio, against the wind tunnel test data.
Code-to-code comparison study on rotor aeromechanics in descending flight
2015 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.29 No.8
This paper conducts the aeromechanics study using the two different rotorcraft computational structural dynamics (CSD) codes,CAMRAD II and DYMORE II, for the rotor in low-speed descending flight. The three test cases of the HART (Higher-harmonic controlaeroacoustic rotor test) I -baseline, minimum noise, and minimum vibration- are considered in this study of the blade-vortex interaction(BVI) airloads, rotor trim, blade elastic deformations, and blade structural loads. The two prediction results are compared to each otherfor a code-to-code comparison study as well as to the measured data. Although CAMRAD II and DYMORE II use different theories andmodels, most of the prediction results are similar to each other and compared fairly well with the wind tunnel test data. For all the threetest cases, the two rotorcraft CSD analyses show good prediction on the fluctuations of the section normal force (M2Cn) due to BVI, butboth over-predict the trimmed collective pitch angle. The blade elastic deformations, such as flap deflection and elastic torsion deformationat the tip, are reasonably predicted by both rotorcraft CSD analyses. But, the CAMRAD II result using the multiple-trailer wakemodel with consolidation is slightly better than the DYMORE II prediction with the single wake panel model particularly for the elastictorsion deformation in the baseline case. In addition, CAMRAD II and DYMORE II both correlate reasonably the blade structural loads, such as flap bending, lead-lag bending, and torsion moments, with the measured data; however, the CAMRAD II results are moderatelybetter than the DYMORE II predictions.

This work conducts the performance and airloads analyses of the tiltrotor, using a nonlinear flexible multibody dynamics analysis code, DYMORE. The TRAM (Tilt Rotor Aeroacoustic Model) which is a 1/4-scale V-22 tiltrotor is used as a validation tiltrotor model. Various multibody elements such as the nonlinear elastic beams, rigid bodies, mechanical joint, and so on are used to model the TRAM. Also, the general freewake model and the stall-delay model are used to represent more elaborately the aerodynamic characteristics of the tiltrotor. The tiltrotor performance and airloads in hover and low-speed forward flight (advance ratio=0.15) are predicted and compared with the wind tunnel test data.
