        비알코올성 지방간과 대사증후군 및 혈청 카로테노이드와의 관련성

        Objectives : This study was conducted to investigate the associations of non alcoholic fatty liver with metabolic syndrome and the serum carotenoids. Methods : This study was conducted in a general hospital in South Korea from November, 2004 to August, 2005. The study subjects were 350 sampled persons who were aged from 40 years and older (males : 180, females : 170). They were grouped into the normal, mild and severe groups according to fat accumulation in their livers, as determined by ultrasonography. We analyzed the association between non alcoholic fatty liver and metabolic syndrome by multiple logistic regression analysis and we analyzed the association between non alcoholic fatty liver and the serum carotenoids by a general linear model(ANCOVA). Results : After adjustment for the effect of potential covariates, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was associated with fat accumulation in the liver (p trend <0.001). If the odds ratio of normal group is 1.00, then that of the mild group is 2.80 (95% C.I=1.17-6.71) and that of the severe group is 7.29 (95% C.I=2.76-19.30). The prevalence of metabolic alterations fitting the criteria of metabolic syndrome, according to the class of fat accumulation in the liver, was significantly increased, except for criteria of high blood pressure, a large waist circumference and low HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol level (p trend <0.001). The level of serum ${\beta}$-carotene was decreased according to the class of fat accumulation in the liver (p trend=0.036), but the levels of serum ${\alpha}$-carotene, lycopene, ${\beta}$-cryptoxanthin and lutein were not decreased. Conclusions : This study shows that non alcoholic fatty liver was associated with metabolic syndrome and with the serum ${\beta}$-carotene level.

        대학 교양 인문학 수업의 철학 텍스트 교수법 연구

        이 논문은 대학 교양과정의 인문학 수업에서 철학 텍스트를 어떻게 선택하고 가르칠지에 대한 연구이다. 2000년 이후 많은 대학에서 교양필수 과목으로 인문학 강의가 다양한 이름으로 개설되었다. 그런데교수자의 전공과 관심에 따라 강조점을 다르게 두어 이 강좌의 개설취지가 모호해졌다. 그리하여 이연구에서 인문학 교육의 목표를 좀 더 분명히 가늠하면서 효율적인 교수법을 찾는 것을 주제로 설정했다. 특히 철학 텍스트의 교수법에 중점을 두었는데, 그 이유는 이 과목에서 철학이 차지하는 비중이절대적이기 때문이다. 따라서 철학이 교양과정에서 큰 비중을 차지할 수밖에 없는 정당성을 찾으면서인문학 강의의 취지에 부합하기 위한 철학 텍스트 선정과 교수법을 제시하려고 한다. 그리고 그 방식은텍스트의 특성과 수업유형에 따라 철학 텍스트를 분류한 후, 구체적인 수업구성 항목을 검토하여 교수법을 설계할 수 있는 모형을 보여주는 절차를 따를 것이다. 이 연구가 성공적으로 이루어져 효율적인 교수법을 통해 학생들이 철학 텍스트를 보다 잘 이해하고, 나아가 철학적인 사유를 통해 자신의 삶을 이끄는 올바른 판단기준과 행동지침을 찾는 데 도움이되었으면 한다. This paper is a study on how to select and teach philosophical texts in a humanities class within a liberal arts curriculum at university. Since 2000, lectures in the humanities have been offered under various class names in many universities as one of the required subjects for liberal arts courses. However, the purpose of these lectures has since become ambiguous, because the emphasis can vary depending on the instructors' major or individual interests. Thus, in this study we endeavored to discover how we might teach the humanities more efficiently. We also attempted to make the goal of humanities education much clearer to all involved. In particular, this study was focused on the teaching method regarding philosophical texts. This is because philosophy is of the utmost importance to these types of lectures. Therefore, I would like to present how one might best select and teach any given philosophical text—a process that will conform to the purpose of lectures in the humanities. I shall also attempt to justify why the study of philosophy should be of the utmost importance when it comes to liberal arts courses. In particular, my study will present a model on how to teach philosophical texts, considering specific elements for the class, after classifying the philosophical texts according to the characteristics of the texts and the type of class being taught. Hopefully, as a result of this study, effective teaching methods will help students better understand philosophical texts. Moreover, I hope it further helps them find the right criteria and guidelines to improve their judgement and behavior, all with the aim of allowing them to lead their lives with the aid of philosophical thinking.

        Relationship Between Serum Concentrations of Organochlorine Pesticides and Metabolic Syndrome Among Non-Diabetic Adults

        Objectives: This study was performed to investigate if organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were associated with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance among non-diabetes. Methods: Among subjects who participated in a community-based health survey, 50 non-diabetic subjects with metabolic syndrome and 50 normal controls were selected. Insulin resistance was measured by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). Eight OCPs were selected. Results: After adjusting for confounders except for body mass index (BMI), beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH) and heptachlor epoxide were positively associated with metabolic syndrome. Odds ratios across tertiles of β-HCH and heptachlor epoxide were 1.0, 3.2 and 4.4, and 1.0, 4.0 and 6.0, respectively (p for trend = 0.01 and <0.01). After additional adjustment for body mass index (BMI), heptachlor epoxide still showed an increasing trend with adjusted odds ratios of 1.0, 4.1, and 4.6 (p for trend = 0.10). When the five components of metabolic syndrome (with the definition of high fasting glucose (≥100 mg/dL)) were separately analyzed, all components were positively, but not significantly,associated with heptachlor epoxide. As the serum concentration of heptachlor epoxide increased, HOMA-IR increased significantly in subjects with metabolic syndrome even after adjusting for BMI (p value <0.05 and <0.01). Conclusions: Despite the small sample size, this study suggests that the background exposure to some OCPs may be associated with metabolic syndrome.

        Diving is a perilous activity. Long exposure to the subaquatic environment results in many troubles to divers. In Korea, the number of divers, especially recreational ones, is soaring up and the incidence of diving related accidents and illnesses is also increasing rapidly. Consequently,diving medicine which approaches underwater medical problems is getting more important to doctors as well as divers. Decompression sickness (DCS) is one of the most typical diseases in diving medicine, and divers who breathe compressed air or mixed gas always have a risk of suffering from it. DCS is caused by bubbles from dissolved inert gas as a result of decompression. The diagnosis of DCS is based completely on clinical manifestations, but it is not easy to make a correct diagnosis due to various symptoms. In general, DCS needs prompt recompression chamber treatment with trained medical and paramedical staff, but few doctors are trained to handle diving related diseases like DCS and most people in Korea are not aware of diving medicine. Additionally,lack of recompression facilities hinders DCS patients from taking treatment timely. To deal with these problems, Korean government as well as doctors needs to show deep concern at this field.
