This study was carried out to isolate and identify Salmonella species from poultry slaughterhouses and pork meat processing plants during the period from January 1997 to August 1998, and analyze resistance of antimicrobial agents and plasmid profiles of isolated Salmonella strains. A total of 15 Salmonella strains was isolated from poultry carcasses, swine carcasses, pork meats and cutting boards. Identified Salmonella strains were S. typhimurium, S. heidelberg, S. hilingdon, S. mbandaka, and S. virginia. Ten (66.7%) of 15 Salmonella strains showed resistance to antimicrobial agents and five strains (33.3%) of them were resistant to two or more antimicrobial agents. Plasmids were isolated from three Salmonella isolates which had two or more plasmids.

In order to investigate the hygienic conditions of potable water in farm area, we examined the hygienic bacteriological and chemical tests of the 159 waters in the farm areas of Kwangjugun, Namyangju-gun, Yangpyung-gun Paju-gun and Hwasung-gun.The results were as follows: 1. Of the 159 waters, the average numbers of standard plate count and coliform were 920 $\pm$ 250ml and 450 $\pm$ 380/100 ml, respectively. The average pH was 6.74 $\pm$ 0.08, KMnO$_4$ consumption 4.18 $\pm$ 0.23 mg/l, turbidity 0.74 $\pm$ 0.08 degree, NH$_3$-N 0.07 $\pm$ 0.02 mg/l, NO$_3$-N 7.76 $\pm$ 0.48 mg/l, total hardness 101.3 $\pm$ 4.7mg/l, chlorine 18.6 $\pm$ 1.3mg/l, sulfate 12.9 $\pm$ 1.0 mg/l, lead 0.036 $\pm$ 0.003 mg/l, manganese 0.017 $\pm$ 0.003 mg/l, zinc 0.064 $\pm$ 0.005 mg/l, and copper 0.010 $\pm$ 0.001 mg/l, respectively. 2. Of the 159 waters, 84 samples (52.8%) were over 100 per ml of SPC or detected coliform per 100 ml water and 63 samples (39.6%) exceed over physicochemical limited criteria for potable water. NO$_3$-N was the primary item among excess contents of potable water in farm areas. 3. The contents of total hardness, chlorine and NO$_3$-N in Hwasung-gun were higher than those in the other regions, but the numbers of SPC and coliform in Yangpyung-gun and Namyangjugun were higher than those in the other regions. 4. The correlationships among many items were highly significant (SPC, Coliform, KMnO$_4$ consumption NH$_4$-N, NO$_3$-N, KMnO$_4$, Total hardness, Chlorine, Sulfate).

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder caused by germline mutation of the MEN1 gene. It is characterized by tumors of the anterior pituitary gland, parathyroid glands, and endocrine pancreas. Thymic carcinoid tumor is uncommon and associated with a high mortality, but its natural history has not been investigated yet. We report a case of asymptomatic MEN 1 with a thymic carcinoid tumor. A 37-year-old man underwent a routine medical checkup and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a duodenal neuroendocrine tumor (NET). Further studies showed the coexistence of pancreatic tumor, parathyroid hyperplasia, pituitary adenoma, and thymoma. The patient underwent duodenal endoscopic mucosal resection, distal pancreatectomy, subtotal parathyroidectomy, and thymectomy. The pathological test revealed a duodenal NET, pancreatic NET, parathyroid hyperplasia, and thymic carcinoid tumor. He was treated for MEN 1. We report this asymptomatic case of MEN 1 with a literature review. (Korean J Helicobacter Up Gastrointest Res 2019;19:65-70)
Non-cirrhotic portal hypertension in an ankylosing spondylitis patient

Idiopathic non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (INCPH) is a disease with an uncertain etiology consisting of non-cirrhotic portal hypertension and portal pressure increase in the absence of liver cirrhosis. In INCPH, patients exhibit normal liver functions and structures. The factors associated with INCPH include the following: Umbilical/portal pyremia, bacterial diseases, prothrombic states, chronic exposure to arsenic, vinyl chloride monomers, genetic disorders, and autoimmune diseases. Approximately 70% of patients present a history of major variceal bleeding, and treatment relies on the prevention of complications related to portal hypertension. Autoimmune disorders associated with INCPH are mainly systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. To the best of our knowledge, a case of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) associated with INCPH has not been reported thus far. Therfore, we report our experience of a patient with AS accompanied by INCPH, who showed perisplenic varices with patent spleno-portal axis and hepatic veins along with no evidence of cirrhosis on liver biopsy, and provide a brief literature review.
시판 식물성 식품의 저장온도 및 저장기간별 세균균속의 변화

Out of a total of 118 genera isolated from commercially distributed plant foods, 34 genera were identified and among them the predominant genera were Pseudomonas(28.8%) and followed by Bacillus(26.3%), Staphylococcus(11.0%). Out of 1345 isolates from commercially distributed plant foods stored at 10℃, 20℃ and 30℃ for 14 days, 25 genera were identified and Pseudomonas(30.3%), Bacillus(23.4%) and Staphylococcus(8.6%) were predominant. The predominant genus among 491 isolates isolated from commercially distributed plant foods stored at 10℃ was Pseudomonas(35.2%), followed by Bacillus(22.8%) and Staphylococcus(7.9%). The predominant genus among 419 isolates isolated from commercial plant foods stored at 20℃ was Pseudomonas(27.7%) followed by Bacillus(24.3%) and Staphylococcus(7.6%) and the predominant genus among 435 isolates isolated at 30℃ was Pseudomonas(27.4%) followed by Bacillus(23.2%) and Staphylococcus(10.1%). Consequently, Pseudomonas and Bacillus were the most influent bacteria for the storage time and temperature in the commercially distributed plant foods. When it was in the higher storage temperature, Bacillus was highly influenced, and in the lower storage temperature, Pseudomonas was influenced. But the longer the storage time was, the greater the hygienic influence of Bacillus, and the shorter the storage time was, the greater the hygienic influence of Pseudomonas was.
시판 동물성 식품의 저장온도 및 저장기간별 세균균속의 변화

It is very important to prepare the sanitation criteria for the animal foods through the microbiological examination and the investigation of tendency to change of the organisms according to the storage temperature and period. As the results of identification of total 110 genera isolated from commercial animal foods, 15 genera were identified and predominant genera were Staphylococcus(29.1%), Pseudomonas (13.6%) and Enterococcus(12.7%) and followed by Enterobacter, Lactobacillus, Achromobacter, Aeromonas, Escherichia, Micrococcus, Bacillus, Klebsiella, Serratia and yeast. As the results of identification of 1323 isolates from commercial animal foods stored at 10℃, 20℃ and 30℃, 21 genera were identified and Staphylococcus(22.5%), Enterococcus(15.9%), Pseudomonas(15.9%), Bacillus(10.3%) were predominant. The predominant genus among 405 isolates from commercial animal foods stored at 10℃ was Pseudomonas(28.9%), followed by Staphylococcus(19.8%), Enterococcus(16.0%) and Bacillus(11.1%). The predominant genus among 483 isolates from commercial animal foods stored at 20℃ was Staphylococcus(23.4%), followed by Enterococcus(16.0%) and Pseudomonas(11.1%) but the predominant genera among 436 isolates from commercial animal foods stored at 30℃ was Staphylococcus(23%), followed by Enterococcus(15.4%) and Bacillus(11%).
