The purpose of this paper is to analyse destruction of desire and humanism in Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper through becomingother on the basis of Deleuze’s theory. In The Prince and the Pauper, Mark Twain emphasizes the important value of humanity and humanism in our society by criticizing inhumanities and injustice which are perpetrated by the British Empire in the 16th century. In this novel, the two protagonists, prince Edward Tudor and pauper Tom Canty, exchange their status and roles by changing their clothes. They desire each other’s status and life that seem to be happier than their own’s. According to Deleuzian theory, Edward and Tom attempts ‘border crossings,’ and ‘deterritorialization’ through becoming-other. Tom wants to be Prince Edward for his luxurious and gorgeous life, while Edward is anxious to be a pauper Tom Canty for his free and unbridled life. Although they experience each other’s life, they don’t feel true happiness in the process of becoming-other. The real prince Edward experiences much suffering and oppression committed outside of the royal court, while the pauper Tom experiences horror and boring life through needless and cumbersome etiquettes formalities, and ostentation inside of the palace. After their returning to each other’s own position, although their becoming-other attempts seem to be failed by deconstruction of their desire, their sense of subjectivity was changed and intensified. They turned into a merciful and lenient characters through the process of becoming-other. Mark Twain emphasizes the importance of humanism in our society through the critique of imperial and unjust factors in the background of 16th century English history. (The Prince and the Pauper, 1881)에서 16세기 영국의 역사를 배경으로 제국주의의 비인간적인 행태를 날카롭게 비판하면서 따뜻한 인본주의 사상의 중요성을 강조하고 있다.
