Our study aimed to assess the effects of hypoxia on aerobic exercise capacity at high altitudes through analysis of aerobic exercise metabolism and blood gas in order to explanation of blood acid-base equilibrium regulation and determine the optimal altitude for exercise training. The study included 11 Korean male university students. The oxygen concentration of simulated environments included 20.9% O₂, 16.5% O₂, 14.5% O₂, 12.8% O₂, and 11.2% O₂. Exercise test was performed with 3~6 days interval. Exercise intensity was established cycle exercise load(watt) correspond to 70% HRmax at sea-level. As a result, during 30 minutes exercise, blood acid-base equilibrium maintained through respiratory compensation caused by metabolic acidosis at 14.5% and 16.5% oxygen concentration but not maintained at 12.8% and 11.2% oxygen concentration compared to sea-level. Therefore, altitude exercise training at oxygen levels of 12.8% O₂ and below might improve blood acid-base equilibrium and aerobic exercise capacity.

        문황운(Moon, Hwang-Woon),박훈영(Park, Hun-Young),선우섭(Sunoo, Sub),남상석(Nam, Sang-Seok) 한국체육과학회 2016 한국체육과학회지 Vol.25 No.2

This study was designed to examine the effect of short-term normobaric hypoxic training by reviewing the change of VO₂max, erythropoietin(EPO) and blood lactate level of Taekwondo players in high ground environment. Test subjects are 21 Taekwondo players: 16.5%O₂(2,000m altitude) environment training hypoxic group(HG) of 10, normal environment training control group(CG) of 11. Each group was analysed to examine VO₂max, EPO and blood lactate level before and after the 7days of training. As the result of research, there were changes in VO₂max and EPO before and after the training. However, they did not show the noticeable changes between the two groups. In case of blood lactate, HG shows more increase than CG, but, after 30 minutes and 3 minutes of training, HG shows decrease compared to CG. Through these results, hypoxic training intensity and period is assumed to be important to the training effect to elite players. In later research, the physical change needs to be studied by increasing intensity, period and frequency.

This study is about changes in antioxidant response during repeated apnea diving. The subjects are 16 male university students. The method is to measure MDA, SOD, red blood cell, lactic acid, blood suger, blood and heart rate at rest, after 5, 10, 15 and 20 times of repeated apnea diving in 5M diving pool. One-way ANOVA with repeated measure was performed to verify the difference in the mean between periods, and the LSD method was performed for post-hoc testing if there was any significance between groups. the statistical significance level was set as α=.05. As a result, there were significant differences in white blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, blood glucose, lactic acid, and heart rate changes according to the number of times and time, but there were no changes in MDA and SOD. This showed that the intensity of apnea diving was low in male college students and there was no significant difference due to physical adaptation. Therefore, in future studies, in-depth studies of various variables appearing during apnea diving in various environments and conditions are required.

        문황운(Moon, Hwang-Woon),최윤진(Chol, Yoon-Jin),김우석(Kim, Woo-Suk) 한국체육과학회 2022 한국체육과학회지 Vol.31 No.5

The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of an automatic stepper that can be an easy exercise for the elderly who are experiencing difficulties in physical activity at a point in time when the need for exercise and reduction of physical activity in the elderly is being emphasized through COVID-19. The purpose of this study is to investigate the physiological changes of a sedentary automatic stepper through changes in energy consumption and changes in vascular elasticity variables. The subjects of this study were 8 male and 9 female aged 83 years old. 30 minutes of automatic stepper exercise was performed. Blood pressure, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, arterial stiffness and lactic acid were measured before and after exercise, and energy consumption was measured through heart rate, oxygen intake, METs, and cumulative calorie consumption before and during exercise for 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes. The results of this study showed that systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressure all decreased after exercise in the male elderly, but there was no statistically significant change. In addition, the cumulative calorie consumption of both male and female elderly increased statistically significantly(p<.000), but there was no significant change in the vascular elasticity variable. This study tried to examine whether the effect of automatic stepper exercise can be applied to the elderly male and female, but only showed a significant increase in the cumulative energy consumption. In addition, changes in vascular elasticity were examined, but exercise intensity was low, and it was difficult to study vascular elasticity by sitting and continuing topical exercise. In future research, it is considered that it is necessary to develop an automatic stepper exercise program suitable for various subjects, such as the elderly, the disabled, and patients who need to exercise safely, and to examine the effect in depth with various variables.

Vol.29 No.3

We are generally believed that optimal muscular function and hypertrophy gains are induced via moderate- or high-intensity resistance training, equivalent to at least 70% of an individual’s 1 repetition maximum. In recent years, systemic hypoxic stress has emerged as a stimulation condition that can induce more physiological and biochemical changes caused by resistance exercise. Hypoxic stress result in changes in neuromotor control, metabolic changes, hormonal changes, cellular swelling, and intracellular signaling pathways, similar to the effects of resistance exercise. The combination of hypoxic stress and resistance exercise is expected to have a greater effect on the improvement of muscular function and hypertrophy. Therefore, we examined the previous studies for understand the concept of intermittent hypoxic resistance training (IHRT) and its effectiveness, and to grasp the principle of IHRT to improve muscular function and hypertrophy. However, few investigations have examined the combination effects of hypoxic stress and resistance exercise, and as such it is difficult to make recommendations for implementing IHRT based on current understanding. It should also be acknowledged that a number of mechanisms proposed to facilitate the augmented response to IHRT remain poorly understood, particularly the systemic role of metabolic, hormonal, cellular swelling, and intracellular signaling pathways. Future research should examine the various physiological and biochemical mechanism and performance to resistance exercise in hypoxic condition and training in systemic hypoxic condition.
