현대 한국미술사연구의 대가인 황수영박사의 생애와 학문세계를 체계적으로 논의한 글이다. 첫째 황수영 박사의 생애는 평생을 학문위주로 살았기 때문에 학문적 생애만 논의했다. 그 결과 4 단계로 나눌 수 있었는데, 수학기, 성장기, 완성기, 마무리기 등이다. 수학기는 29 년간이고, 성장기는 23년간이며 완성기는 15 년간이고, 마무리기는 25 년간이어서 학문을 왕성하게 연구한 시기는 약 38년 정도라고 할 수 있다. 이처럼 근 40 여 년간 학문 활동에 전념했거나 학문연구를 지원하는 활동에 열성적이었던 관계로 많은 업적을 남길 수 있었다. 둘째 업적은 첫째 고유섭 선생의 유고정리와 간행하는 업적, 둘째 고고미술동인회의 창립과 고고미술지를 간행하는데 지대한 공헌을 한 점, 셋째 불교미술학과와 대학원 미술사학과 등 문화재 내지미술사 관계 2 개 학과를 설립하는 업적, 넷째 불교미술 조사와 불교미술사(불상, 불탑, 불구, 금석문, 사경)연구를 개척하고 정립한 업적, 다섯째 석굴암의 중수와 국내외 석굴사원의 조사연구에 공헌한 업적 등 크게 다섯 가지로 나눌 수 있는 것이다. This study discussed systematically the life and academic world of Dr. Hwang Soo-yeong, themaster of contemporary studies of Korean art history. First, because Dr. Hwang Soo-yeong’s entire life was committed to academic activities, this study was confined to his academic life. According to the findings of this study, his life is largely divided into the periods of learning, growth, maturity, and completion. The period of learning is 29 years, the period of growth 23 years, the period of mature 19 years, and the period of completion 25 years. Therefore, it is for about 38 years that he was active in academic research. Naturally as he was committed to academic activities or supported academic researches for nearly 40 years, he made considerable achievements in different areas. Second, his major achievements are grouped largely into five areas: firstly, the organization and publication of Dr. Ko Yoo-seop’s posthumous manuscripts; secondly, remarkable contributions to the foundation of the Archaeology and Arts Club and the publishing of the Journal of Archaeology and Arts; thirdly, launching two academic departments related to culturalheritages and art history including the Department and Graduate School of Buddhist Arts and the Department of Art History; fourthly, pioneering and establishing research on Buddhist arts and Buddhist art history (Buddhist statues, stupas, Buddhist articles, epigraphy, and Sutra duplication); and fifthly, contributions to the restoration of the Seokguram Grotto and the surveys of stone cave temples in Korea and other countries.
