Strength evaluation of soft soils is a formidable task because of difficulties in sampling, specimen preparation and setting in triaxial cells. In undrained triaxial testing, sampling disturbance, verticality of specimen and bedding effect give a great influence on shear strength measurements. On the other hand, shear wave measurements of specimens are less influenced by these factors. In this research, the bender elements were attached to top cap and base pedestal of triaxial cell and shear wave velocities were measured. To initiate a methodology to evaluate shear strength indirectly by measuring shear wave velocity, a relationship between shear strength and shear wave velocity was developed with kaolinite specimens consolidated in the laboratory. Undrained shear strength turns out to increase linearly with shear wave velocity. Stress-strain curves can also be predicted with a hyperbolic model and shear wave measurements.

암석 코아의탄성계수 측정에 동적방법은 잘 사용되지 않을뿐만아니라 그 값은 설계에 많이 사용되지 않는다 그이유는 동적으로 결정한 탄성계수 값이 정적으로 결정된 값보다 매우 큰 것 (약 10배)으로 인식되기 때문이다. 이논문에서는 암석 코아의 동적과 정적 시험결과를 제시하였다 도출괸 결과는 :1) 실내탄성파시험으로 매우 일관성 있는 탄성계수가 결정되고 2) 변형율에 따른 암석 코아의 비선형 변형특성의 잠정적 모델이 제시되었다. Dynamic measurements are used rather sparingly to determine the elastic modull of rock cores and modulus values are not much utilized in design practice. The reason seems to result from the general perception that values obtained by dynamic measurement are much higher (about 10 times) than those determined statically. This paper presents results from dynamic and static tests on rock cores. The findings are: 1) elastic modull can be consistently determined by laboratory seismic testing. 2) nonlinear deformation characteristics of rock cores was tentatively proposed with variation in elastic modulus with strain.
다층 구성 부지에서의 깊이별 실체파 속도의 결정을 위한 시추공간 탄성파 탐사 발진 장치 개발 및 적용

실체파 속도 결정 목적의 여러 시추공 탄성파 시험 기법 중에서 크로스홀 기법은 지반 동적 특성 평가에 신뢰성이 가장 높은 결과를 도출할 수 있는 기법 중의 하나로 알려져 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 지하수위 존재 여부에 관계없이 토사 뿐 만 아니라 암반을 대상으로 크로스홀 탄성파 시험을 성공적으로 수행할 수 있도록, 연직 시추공 안에서 지반에 대한 수평 방향 가진이 가능한 다목적의 스프링식 발진 장치를 개발하고, 국내 주요 시설물 부지들을 대상으로 크로스홀 탄성파 시험을 실시하였다. 대상 부지에서의 수평방향 가진의 크로스홀 탄성파 시험으로부터 전단파 속도 및 압축파 속도와 같은 실체파 속도의 결정을 통해 지반 동적 특성을 효율적으로 평가하였으며, 적용 대상인 시설물들의 내진성능 평가 및 내진 설계를 위한 근본 자료로 제시하였다.
터널 및 기초 암반의 동적 강성 평가를 위한 인홀 탄성파시험의 적용

Dynamic stiffness of subsurface materials is one of the most important geotechnical parameters in predicting deformational behavior of structures as well as practicing seismic design and performance evaluation. In an effort to measure the parameter efficiently and accurately, various borehole seismic testing techniques have been, thus, developed and used during past several decades. Moreover, recent rush of underground-space projects and increasing size of structures put more stress on reliable site investigation techniques in estimating stiffness of rock mass. In the paper, a new technique called "in-hole seismic test" has been implemented to measure the dynamic stiffness of rock masses at subsurface foundations and tunnel-faces. The reliance of in-hole seismic test was evaluated by comparing the testing results at several rock sites with those of other borehole techniques and the technique turns out to be an efficient and accurate in-situ testing technique.

Mechanical properties of Municipal Solid Wastes(MSW) and their influencing parameters were studied by using a series of triaxial compression tests and resonant column tests. The shear strength of MSW can be modeled by a bilinear failure criterion. As the unit weight increasing, cohesion and internal friction were increased linearly on semi -log scale. As the proportion of waste to soil increases, maximum shear moduli tend to decrease whereas minimum damping ratios increase. Shear moduli and damping of degradable waste are higher than those of non-degradable MSW.

Fiber reinforced soils have recently implemented to fills and base layers of highways and railroads, and deformation behaviors of reinforced soils in turn should be investigated. The paper evaluated deformation characteristics of fiber reinforced sands and their effectiveness of reinforcement using resonant column tests. The specimens were prepared by varying gradation and mixing polypropylene staple fibers of 0.3% fiber content. Maximum shear moduli of reinforced sands were increased by up to 30% with increasing uniformity coefficient. Shear moduli of well-graded reinforced sands were larger than those of poorly-graded ones regardless of confining pressure in the whole range of shearing strain and reinforcement was, in turn, more effective with higher uniformity coefficient.
전단파계측을 이용한 연약지반의 압밀상태 평가와 전단강도 결정

Undrained shear strength of specimen re-consolidated with in-situ effective stress was compared with those calculated from c/p ratio. Also, shear wave velocities of re-consolidated specimens using bender element measurements were compared with in-situ shear wave velocity profiles using MASW(multichannel analysis of surface waves). Re-consolidated shear strength is under the c/p ratio line and in-situ shear wave velocity profiles is less than the one of the normally consolidated specimen using bender element measurements. These results indicate that the soft clay layer is under consolidated.
