A flow visualization experiment using water-table models was performed. The water-table models simulated the two-dimensional cold flow fields inside the combustion chambers of incinerators. The flow were visualized by small but neutrally bouyant particles photographed by an overhead camera. The experimentally simulated flow fields apparently showed distinct features of two combustion chamber shapes; counter and parallel flow types. The significance of the secondary air injection on the mixing of combustion gases were clearly observed. The effects of the recirculation zones, which were present in the secondary chamber, were discussed by considering the importance of them for optimal combustion.

An aircraft in flight and ATC(Air Traffic Controllers) working in the Ground Control Center carry out a voice communication using the radio. Voice signal to be transmitted from the aircraft is received to a plurality of terrestrial sites around the country at the same time. The ATC receives the various quality of voice signal from the aircraft depending on the distance, speed, weather conditions and adjusted condition of the antenna and the radio. The ATC carries out a voice communication with aircraft in the optimal conditions finding the best voice signal. However, the present system chooses the values of the CD(Carrier Dectect) which is determined to be superior to, based on the input voice level, as optimal channel. Thus this system can not be seen to select the optimal channel because it doesn't consider the effect of the noise which influences on the communication quality. In this paper, after removing the noise in the voice signal, we could give the digitized information and an improved voice signal quality, so that users can select an optimal channel. By using it, when operating the training eavesdropping system or the aircraft control, we can expect prevention accident and improvement of training performance by selecting the improved quality channel.

As one of renewable energy sources, biomass is playing a major role in reducing the greenhouse gas emission in the UK. The country currently produces about 4.5% (18.1TWh in 2006) of the total electricity generation from renewables, where biomass-based sources accounts for 50% of the amount and the remainder mostly from hydro and windpower. In 2007, the UK government has announced its new energy policy through the Energy White Paper, which includes an ambitious national target of 60% cuts in carbon emission by 2050. Complementary strategic plans in key renewable energy technologies accompanied the Energy White Paper, including biomass strategy, waste strategy and low carbon transportation strategy. This paper summarizes the current status and policy of UK for renewable energy production with focus on the use of biomass and bioenergy.

Biomass combustion converts the renewable fuel directly into energy. This paper summarizes experimental studies on packed bed combustion of different biomass materials including herbaceous crops, woody and waste-derived materials. The key mechanism of combustion in a packed bed is the downward propagation of ignition front against the upward air flow. Radiation is the major mode of heat transfer for the ignition propagation, which delivers the heat required for moisture evaporation and heating up to a pyrolysis temperature in fresh particles below the ignition front. From measurements, key parameters for the rates of ignition and combustion can be derived, which are independent of the fuel bed size and therefore useful for furnace design and operation. The parameters include ignition front speed, ignition rate and burning rate. The test results show that fairly dry biomass has a maximum burning rate of 280-400 ㎏/㎡hr and corresponding air flow rate to achieve the burning rate varies with particle shape and size.
