미국문화사 강의에서의 소설과 영화의 활용 - 1920년대 재즈 시대를 중심으로 -

이 논문은 소설과 영화 작품을 활용하여 효과적인 미국 문화사 교육 방안을 모색해 보는데 그 목적이 있다. F. S. 피츠제럴드의 소설 『위대한 개츠비』와 배즈 루어먼 감독의 영화 <위대한 개츠비>는 뛰어난 문학성과 예술성을 인정받은 문예 작품이기도 하지만 또 한편으로는 재즈 시대 또는 광란의 시대라고 일컫는 1920년대 미국의 사회상을 보여주는 좋은 텍스트이기도 하다. 이러한 점에 착안하여 이 논문에서는 재즈 음악, 폭스트롯과 찰스턴 댄스, 음주와 흡연, 화려한 파티, 짧은 치마를 입고 단발머리에 짙은 화장을 한 신여성 플래퍼의 등장, 그리고 자동차 문화 등으로 대변되는 1920년대의 미국 문화사를 강의할 때 효과적인 교육을 위하여 소설 작품 『위대한 개츠비』와 동명의 영화 작품을 활용하는 방안을 제시해 보았다. 길드 에이지에 구축된 기간 산업을 바탕으로 1920년대부터 본격적인 산업사회로 접어든 미국은 소비재의 대량 생산이 가능해졌다. 비약적인 발전 덕택에 기업은 엄청난 부를 축적하였고 이것은 개인에게 분배되어 미국은 바야흐로 대중 소비사회로 접어들게 되었다. 이러한 사회 변동과 더불어 1차 세계 대전이 끝난 후 젊은이들을 중심으로 미국인들은 정신적 방황을 겪었다. 이른바 길 잃은 세대라고 불린 이 시기의 미국인들은 전통적인 청교도 풍의 기성 질서에 대하여 반기를 들면서 도덕적인 타락과 환락에 빠져들기 시작했다. 이러한 1920년대 미국 사회의 모습은 소설과 영화 작품으로도 소개되었는데 대표적인 사례가 바로 앞서 언급한 피츠제럴드의 소설 『위대한 개츠비』이며 그것을 영화로 만든 사례 가운데 최근 것이 바로 배즈 루어먼 감독의 작품이다. 이들은 각 장르의 특성, 즉 스토리텔링과 이미지텔링의 강점을 살려 기존 도덕과 질서가 붕괴된 1920년대 미국의 사회상을 생생하게 보여준다. 그러므로 문화사 강의에서도 이러한 점을 활용한다면 학생들의 흥미와 관심을 유발하여 교육 효과를 높일 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 역사 분야의 전문가가 아닌 소설가와 영화 감독이 만든 문예 작품이므로 역사적 사실에 대한 신뢰성을 담보하기는 어렵다. 그럼에도 불구하고 문화사 강의에 있어서 소설과 영화를 활용해야 할 필요는 충분하다. 그 이유는 스토리텔링과 이미지 매체에 익숙한 신세대 학생들의 교육 현장에서는 소설과 영화를 이용하는 것이 기대 이상으로 효과적이기 때문이다. 따라서 문화사 강의의 보조 자료로서 소설과 영화를 활용하는 것은 권장되어야 하며 또한 효과적 활용 방안에 관하여 후속 연구가 이어지기를 기대한다. This paper aims at exploring how instructors in the cultural history class of America can use novel and film works to help students understand the society and culture of America in 1920s more efficiently and interestingly. The 1920s of America has been called the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties which is usually represented by money and gaiety. And also in that era, the trend of laissez-faire had been established as one of the lives, values and American ways of thinking in the age. All of these things in the 1920s had resulted from the industrial development and economic prosperity of America. The American of the 1920s found so-called ‘magic formula’ that had produced their wealth and satisfied their desire. The magic formula was composed of high level wages, mass-production, standardized products, nationwide marketing strategy, and mass-consumption. The industry had made various durable products such as cars, radios, movies, electrical irons, refrigerators, washing machines etc. and the consuming society had been formed in 1920s as a result. This article has examined the necessity to use novel and film texts as a supplementary in cultural history class of the American 1920s. To accomplish this paper’s purpose, the novel and film texts I have explored are the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Baz Luhrmann, whose title is The Great Gatsby. While criticizing American materialism, Fitzgerald described that American idealism essentially had the same root as the shallow materialism of America. His novel text depicted American life style and social aspect of 1920s such as the use of automobiles, the appearance of flappers and fox-trotters, the culture of drinking and partying etc.. Similarly, Baz Luhrmann’s film text showed the phases of American society of the 1920s realistically. By adapting the original novel work in his own way, Baz Luhrmann showed the real lives of the American in the 1920s, which were represented by the actors who had the distinct individualities. As above-mentioned, the historical realities of the American culture in 1920s have been found in novel and film works of The Great Gatsby. But the novel and film texts can not be used as the main text in the American cultural history class because they just have described the historical realities of those days fragmentarily and also are not able to establish their credibilities as historical sources. Nevertheless, they need to be used as a supplementary text in the cultural history class because they help the students figure out the outline of the historical realities. Thus, the study aiming at finding out the teaching method using novel and film texts in the cultural history class needs to be conducted in succession.

소설과 영화를 활용한 역사교육 사례 연구

이 논문은 문자로 쓰인 문학 작품과 영상으로 구성된 영화 작품을 활용한 역사 교육 방법을 모색해 보는데 그 목적이 있다. 나다니엘 호손의 소설 『주홍글씨』와 롤랑 조페 감독의 영화 〈주홍 글씨〉는 각각의 영역에서 가치를 인정받은 작품임은 두말할 나위도 없지만 또 한편으로는 17세기 청교도 공동체의 역사를 이해하는데 도움이 되는 역사 텍스트이기도 하다. 이러한 점에 착안하여 본고에서는 청교도 공동체 사회의 역사 가운데 배타적이고 이중적인 요소를 교육함에 있어서 소설과 영화를 활용하는 방안을 모색해 보았다. 유럽 대륙에서 종교 개혁이 한창이던 17세기 초반에 신대륙으로 건너간 청교도들은 뉴잉글랜드 지방에 종교 공동체를 건설했다. 그들이 표방한 신정일치의 공동체 사회는 애초의 의도와는 달리 개인을 억압하는 배타적이고 폐쇄적인 모습이었다. 이와 같은 역사적 사실은 소설과 영화 작품에서도 소개되고 있다. 나다니엘 호손의 소설 『주홍 글씨』와 롤랑 조페 감독의 영화 〈주홍 글씨〉가 바로 그것이다. 이 두 작품은 서로의 차이는 있지만 주인공 헤스터와 딤즈데일을 통해 배타적이며 이중적인 모습으로 세속화된 청교도 사회를 보여준다. 이렇듯 소설과 영화는 장르 특성상 사실 묘사와 영상 이미지를 통하여 당시의 역사적 사실을 형상화하여 전달하기 때문에 역사를 이해하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 하지만 단편적인 사실 전달하는 것으로 그치기 때문에 역사적 사실에 대한 기승전결의 전개 상황과 근원적인 문제를 다루기에는 미흡하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 역사 교육 영역에서 소설과 영화에 관심을 두어야 할 필요는 있다. 교육 현장에서 문학 매체와 영상 매체를 활용함으로써 이미지에 익숙한 영상 세대 학생들로 하여금 흥미를 유발시킬 수 있고 이는 곧 학습 효과로 이어지기 때문이다. 따라서 역사 교육에 일익을 담당하는 보조 텍스트로서 소설과 영화를 활용하는 방안을 적극 모색해야 할 것이다. This paper examines how teachers in the history education class can use novel and film works to help students understand the history of the Puritanism and the Puritanic community in America more efficiently and interestingly. The novel and film texts I discuss in this article are the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Roland Joffe, whose title is The Scarlet Letter . The main point of this article is divided into two parts and each part deals with the necessity and the examples to use novel and film texts in history education class as a supplementary text. Hawthorne’s novel text describes its ambivalence through Puritanic community that advocates for the cause of godliness and religious passion by purifying the established church. But the true picture of the Puritanic community was not consistent with their intention. Hawthorne’s novel text shows not only the conflicts and repressions but also the duality of the Puritanic community by the hypocrisies that the characters reveal. Similarly, Roland Joffe’s film text shows a phase of the Puritanic community without disguise. By adapting the original work and dealing with the sin of adultery, which breaks away from God’s Providence, Roland Joffe reveals the real lives of the Puritanical ancestors in the New England region and suggests the possibility of the change of the community, which are represented by the characters of his work. As above-mentioned, the historical realities of the Puritanical community of New England have been found in novel and film works of The Scarlet Letter. But these novel and film works are not able to be used as the main text in studying history because they just have depicted the historical realities fragmentarily. Nevertheless, they can be used as a supplementary text in the history education class because they help the students understand the outline of the historical reality. Thus, the study attempting to find out the teaching method using novel and film texts in the history education class needs to be continued in succession.

단결정 PbTe 단일 나노선의 열전도도

We investigated the thermal conductivity of individual single-crystalline PbTe nanowires grown by chemical vapor transport method. Suspended MEMS was utilized to precisely measure the thermal conductivity of an individual nanowire. The thermal conductivity of a PbTe nanowire with diameter of 292 nm was measured to be 1.8 W/m·K at 300 K, which is about two thirds of that of bulk PbTe. This result indicates that the thermal conduction through a PbTe nanowire is effectively suppressed by the enhanced phonon boundary scattering. As the diameter of a PbTe nanowire decreases, the corresponding thermal conductivity linearly decreases.

For an enhanced thermoelectric performance, one-dimensional heterostructure nanowires were created that consisted of aBi core and Te shell. The structure was fabricated by depositing Te in-situ onto a Bi nanowire grown by our unique OFF-ON (on-film formation of nanowires) method. After examining a cross-sectional TEM image, it was found that diffusive interface was formed between Bi and Te. Selected area electron diffraction revealed that the crystallinity of the Te shell was some what lower compared to the highly single-crystalline Bi core. The Bi-Te core/shell nanowires can be a smart structure that suppresses phonon transport by several scattering mechanisms, making the OFF-ON method the simplest way to realize that structure.
