Vol.16 No.2

John Marcher in Henry James`s "The Beast in the Jungle" has been stigmatized as someone who "unlived" his life and as a man "to whom nothing was to have happened." The long-standing images of Marcher as a failure and an outcast prevented the reader from appreciating the story in a more positive light. Going deeper into the interior of the seemingly uneventful existence of John Marcher, h s paper explores how the protagonist can emerge as quite a contrary figure. The premises of the paper are that John Marcher embodies desires for ideals and a type of self-affirmation within his passivity. The metaphor of the "beast" and the "jungle," then, becomes a place where these new paradoxical possibilities can be explored and examined. The paper discusses that such desires and struggles have been associated with homosexuality, existential anxiety, and other conditions of life, embodied in the haunting images of the beast. However, the jungle remains open for other possibilities and interpretations as well. John Marcher was not just a failure but was somebody who was caught and battled between the ideals and the mundane; the grand and the trivial. In his o w way, John Marcher sought ways to live a fuller life, striving for the ideals rather than the mundane. One might call Marcher a philosopher or a prophet but, certainly, he was not a total failure.

Vol.15 No.5

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of dental hygienists’ leader-member exchange (LMX) and empowerment on organizational performance, improve human resource management in their organization and their job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and provide basic data that could help improve organizational performance. A survey was conducted in 324 dental hygienists at dental care institutions in Ulsan, Busan, and Daegu from March 2 to 31, 2015 and the following results were obtained: Dental hygienists at dental hospitals had higher levels of LMX than those at dental clinics; those who were at higher positions, who were older, and who were more educated showed higher levels of empowerment. There was significant, positive correlation between LMX and empowerment and job satisfaction and organizational commitment: dental hygienists with better LMX and higher levels of empowerment showed higher levels of job satisfaction and organizational commitment. For dental hygienists, significance (β=0.325, p<0.001) exerted the greatest impact on job satisfaction, followed by organizational commitment (β=0.264, p<0.001) and competence (β=0.164, p<0.01) and LMX (β=0.321, p<0.001) had the greatest impact on organizational commitment, followed by job satisfaction (β=0.275, p<0.001) and significance (β=0.210, p<0.001).To put the results together, dental hygienists in dental care practice had their job satisfaction and organizational commitment affected by LMX and empowerment; therefore, it is necessary to develop diverse education programs with the objective of promoting mutual exchange between a manager of dental hygienists`` team and members and improving empowerment.

Vol.21 No.1

In his novel Divisadero, Michael Ondaatje portrays a nomadic existence and its ideology which gypsies, hippies, and displaced people of his story embody as a way of life. Through the motif of “borders” and “division,” which the novel`s title, ‘Divisadero,` connotes, Ondaatje expands his on-going thoughts on transnationalism and nomadism. Jacques Derrida``s idea of ‘absolute hospitality` in Of Hospitality serves as an analytical framework. As Derrida recognizes the stranger as a potential rebel who will eventually rebel against the authority of the host, this paper analyzes the tragic incidence which occurred on the farm in Petaluma in comparison with the tragedy of Oedipus Rex. Witnessing the circumstances of failed, treacherous hospitality as Ondaatje`s characters exemplify, the reader is invited to ask: “What are the contingencies of hospitality which can, at any time, turn into hostility?” This paper explores answers by examining Ondaatje`s characters caught up in the ethical dilemma of hospitality and hostility.

Vol.18 No.3

Chang-Rae Lee`s fourth novel, The Surrendered, weaves the stories of June Han, Sylvie Tanner, and Hector Brennan, whose lives have been brought together through the Korean War. The novel presents the war as a compellingly violent force, the horror of which can leave an indelible scar on the souls touched by it. This paper, centering around the character of June, examines different ways the three main characters deal with the memory of violence incurred in the war and in the distant past. After losing all of her family in a most violent way during the Korean War, 11-year-old June tries to rebuild her life in New Hope Orphanage. There she meets Sylvie, a reverend`s wife, and Hector, a young American soldier, each of whom also lives with the memory of unspeakable violence. The three people, while drawn to one another through the scars and pains they immediately recognize in one another, are trapped in an odd love triangle involving an orphaned girl and an extramarital affair. Sylvie ends up dying caught in a mysterious fire at the orphanage and Hector brings June to America after the incident. With her spontaneity and obsessive behavior, June may be one of the most complicated, incomprehensible characters Chang-Rae Lee has ever created. Still, through the character of June, Chang-Rae Lee portrays a life of a woman who overcomes her traumatized past with never-wavering perseverance and all-transcending will to life.

Vol.5 No.2

The purpose of this study was to determine how oral health behavior affected interpersonal relationships among the elderly, make a comparison of oral health behavior and interpersonal relationships by their socio-demographic characteristics, and analyze the factors affecting interpersonal relationships on the basis of the critical idea that the poor oral conditions might prevent interpersonal relationships and good social life for the elderly and could increase their sense of social alienation and isolation. For this purpose, a survey was conducted in 257 persons aged 60 years or more who resided in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, and its results are as follows: 1) The respondents`` oral health behavior differed significantly by such socio-demographic characteristics as age, the employment status, types of gatherings, and the smoking status (p<0.05). 2) The respondents who were male, who were younger, who were employed, and who didn``t smoke, showed better interpersonal relationships (p<0.01). 3) The factor most significantly affecting interpersonal relationships was the smoking status (β=0.269), followed by types of gatherings (β=0.180), age (β=-0.174), and oral health behavior (β=-0.139).

Vol.24 No.1

In A Person of Interest, Susan Choi portrays professor Lee`s harrowing experiences, who, unwittingly, becomes a victim of the relentless surveillance system operating against Asian immigrants in a midwestern conservative community. As an aftermath of a mail bomb explosion at his university, professor Lee automatically becomes a person of interest not only in the FBI investigation but also in the white populated community and in his work mainly because of his race. This paper examines how inherent racial discrimination is in different sectors of society in America and how the ideology of assimilation, in a form of scrutiny, can be harshly forced upon individuals for the ideals of model minority. By reconstructing Lee`s experiences in a literary frame, the author opens up a way toward grievances for the grief incurred to Lee, who is helplessly caught in the process of brutal exposure and self-flagellation for his past errors and misjudgement.
