This paper presents a study of the other’s gazes and the subject that appear in the white birch. I began this piece of work after sensing the white birch seeming to gaze at me, and I began to become interested in how the subject of gaze was not a person, but nature. And it was this very part I wanted to explain through my work. I felt comfort and rest from the gaze by nature, and wished to deliver the gaze I felt to the audience through this piece of work. For the theoretical basis of the work analysis, I researched the theory of ‘Gaze’, ‘Imagination’ and ‘Mirror’ by French Psychoanalyst J. Lacan, ‘Existentialism’ and ‘the other’s gaze’ by French Psychologist Sartre. I could confirm the linkage between rest and gaze that appears within this piece of work through this analysis. Arranged analysis of this thesis on the basis of my work is as follows: First, it is a Painting project. The image I sensed from the white birch bark, I reinterpreted into gaze by expressing rest through applying Korean painting on sliding-screen paper, expressing the division of sides and showing color. Second, it is a Drawing project. I wanted to give people the opportunity to see how their back sides looked, and so I began drawing the backsides of people. The drawings were displayed and circulated back to the owners. As I drew the drawings I realized what it meant to be looked upon by another person, and also decided it was a time to look back upon oneself and that itself would be a time of rest and healing. Third, it is an Installation project. While drawing the backsides of people, I thought it would be good for audiences to become the subject and be able to see their back sides from a separate gaze. The work was carried out so that when they stared forward at a mirror, they did not see their front side but their back side instead. Afterwards, I worked on the mirror by attaching a broken mirror and placed pieces of rest that I sowed myself, and placed them on the mirror, so that those who needed rest could write their names on the spot after taking the pieces. This mirror work will continue to be displayed until the mirror is completely filled with peoples’ names, and when the mirror is finished, I plan to move on to my next work. Fourth, it will be a video project. Through the video I will be able to include the sounds of nature and the voices of people. I needed to find people in order to start the video work, and there was communication and a message I could send out the audience. The communication I had with the audience through the display, turned into change for the next project. Therefore I will continue my communication with the audience through the video project. I wish to form a direct communication with the audience through painting, video, installation and drawing projects, and hope for artistic healing effects. Through this research I confirmed that the subject of work can become the audience’s gaze, and I was able to analyze the conditions of such a project. As a result, through this project I was able to form the linkage between communication and artistic healing, and have decided that it may become a social function. With a deeper gaze, I will continue to communicate with nature and people and thereby add further depth to my project.
