Vol.5 No.1

Objective: The objective of this research is to conduct a 6 week study of 3 stroke patients - tibialis anterior taping combined with functional electrical stimulation ; measured before and after a patient's balance, and functional ability to move, walking speed compared. Method: 3 stroke patients undergoing study at Gyeonggido H hospital from December, 2012 until January, 2012 were divided into 3 patient; with the tibialis anterior taping combined with functional electrical stimulation. Balance was measured using the Berg Balance Scale(BBS). Ability to measure functional movement was measured using the Time Up and Go Test(TUG). Gait speed assessment was measured using the 10 m Walking Test(10MWT). BBS, TUG, 10MWT before and after wards within each patient. Results: After 6 weeks of experimentation, the tibialis anterior taping combined with functional electrical stimulation of 3 stroke patients showed a more score increase in BBS, TUG, 10MWT. Conclusion: It can be concluded that tibialis anterior taping combined with functional electrical stimulation is more effective in enhancing the balance and gait of stroke patients.

Vol.5 No.2

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of treadmill gait applied with functional electrical stimulation(FES), lower limb taping, or both FES and lower limb taping on stroke patient's lower limb muscle activity and gaits and compare the effects of the types of training using one of the three methods with each other. Method: Twenty two stroke patients were randomly selected and were randomly assigned to a FES treadmill gait group(FTG) of 8 patients, a lower limb taping treadmill gait group(TTG) of 7 patients, and a treadmill gait group(FTTG) combining FES and taping of 7 patients to apply the respective types of training. The training was applied for 30 minutes one time per day, three days per week for 6 weeks and to measure lower limb muscle activity and gaits, the muscle activity of the tibialis anterior, the gastrocnemius, rectus femoris and biceps femoris was measured and timed up and go test(TUG) and 10 meter walking test(10mWT) were conducted. Results: All the three groups showed significant differences in the muscle activity of the lower limb and gait ability after the experiment compared to those before the experiment. In comparisons among the groups, non of the three groups showed any significant difference. Conclusion: Even improvement in lower limb muscle activity and gait ability can be expected from stroke patients with treadmill gait with FES, lower limb taping, or lower limb taping combined with FES.
