This study was carried out to determine the effect of renal ischemia on renal function and excretion of amino acid in rabbit. The animal models of renal ischemia induced experimentally by clamping the renal artery for different lengths of time. These results were summarized as follows: 1. Ischemia for 30 or 60 min produced a polyuria which is accompanied by an increase in $Na^+$ excretion. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and p-aminohippurate plasma($C_{PAH}$) were not altered by 30 min of ischemia, indicating that transient ischemia results in a marked tubular dysfuction before a reduction in GFR or renal blood flow. 2. Reabsorption of glucose and amino acids such as alanine and lysine was markedly reduced after 30 min of ischemia, and the effect was more pronounced after 60 min of ischemia.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is a common affliction of the thyroid gland, accounting for 70% to 80% of all thyroid cancers,whereas mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of the thyroid gland is uncommon. The simultaneous occurrence of both malignancies is extremely rare. We report the case of a patient with both PTC and MALT lymphoma in the setting of Hashimoto thyroiditis. An 81-year-old female patient was first admitted with goiter and hoarseness, which was attributed to an ultrasonographic thyroid nodule. Subsequent fine-needle aspirate, interpreted as suspicious of papillary thyroid cancer, prompted total thyroidectomy. MALT lymphoma was an incidental postsurgical finding, coexisting with PTC in the setting of Hashimoto thyroiditis. Although the development of MALT lymphoma is very rare, patients with longstanding Hashimoto thyroiditis should undergo careful surveillance for both malignancies.
Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 (HSV-1) 감염에 따른 세포내 유리 $Ca^{2+}$농도의 변화

Herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1)의 감염에 따른 세포내 유리 칼슘농도의 변화에 대한 실험을 수행한 결과, HSV-1이 Vero 세포에 감염한 후 4시간째에 세포내 칼슘농도가 최대로 감소한 것을 알았으며 이러한 세포내 유리 칼슘농도의 감소는 감염성 바이러스의 양에 따라 커지며, 유전자 발현 억제제의 처리나 바이러스의 불활성화에 의해 극복되었다. 따라서 바이러스의 유전자발현이 세포내 유리 칼슘농도의 감소에 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 Vero 세포에 바이러스를 감염시키고 미세소관 안정제인 taxol을 처리하여 4 시간째의 세포내 유리 칼슘농도의 감소가 극복된다는 사실로부터 바이러스이 유전자 물질의 이동에는 미세소관이 관여한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 실험 결과로부터 Vero 세포에서 HSV-1에 의해 유도되는 세포내 유리칼슘 농도의 감소는 HSV-1 증식과 밀접한 관계를 가진다고 생각된다. Infection of Vero cells with herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) resulted in a series of changes in intra-cellular free calcium concentration $([Ca^{2+}]_i)$. A significant and maximal decrease $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ was observed at 4 hours postinfection (hr p.i.) in HSV-1-infected in Vero cells. Inactivation of HSV-1 with UV irradiation and heat treatment abolished HSV-1-induced decrease in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ at 4 hr p.i. in Vero cells. And the degree of the decrease in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ was dependent on the amount of input virus. Taxol, which stabilizes the polymerization of microtubule blocked HSV-1-induced decrease in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ at 4 hr p.i., suggesting that microtubule may mediate the transport of HSV-1 nucleocapsid to the nucleus of infected cell. Treatment of HSV-1-infected Vero cells with metabolic inhibitors such as cycloheximide, cordycepin, or acyclovir partially reversed the decrease in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ at 4 hr p.i.. Thus, it is suggested that HSV-1 induced decrease in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ at 4 hr p.i. in Vero cells may play an important role in the multiplication of HSV-1.
Homogeneous 에미터와 Selective 에미터 결정질 실리콘 태양전지의 온도에 따른 전류-전압 특성 변화 측정 및 분석

Solar cells exhibit different power outputs in different climates. In this study, the temperature dependence of open-circuit voltage(V-oc), short-circuit current(I-sc), fill factor(FF) and the efficiency of screen-printed single-crystal silicon solar cells were studied. One group was fabricated with homogeneously-doped emitters and another group was fabricated with selectively-doped emitters. While varying the temperature (25, 40, 60 and $80^{\circ}C$), the current-voltage characteristics of the cells were measured and the leakage currents extracted from the current-voltage curve. As the temperature increased, both the homogeneously-doped and selectively-doped emitters showed a slight increase in I-sc and a rapid degradation of V-oc. The FF and efficiency also decreased as temperature increased in both groups. The temperature coefficient for each factor was calculated. From the current-voltage curve, we found that the main cause of V-oc degradation was an increase in the intrinsic carrier concentration. The temperature coefficients of the two groups were compared, leading to the idea that structural effects could also affect the temperature dependence of current-voltage characteristics.
돼지 적출 신동맥에 대한 adenosine triphosphate의 영향과 Ca<sup>++</sup>의 동원

The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which has been known as the neurotransmitter of nonadrenergic, noncholinergic nerves, and the source of $Ca^{\sharp}$ in the effect of ATP on the isolated renal artery of pig. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. ATP caused the contraction and the contractile responses were increased in a dose-dependent manner between the concentration of ATP $2{\times}10^{-3}M$ and $10^{-2}M$ on the isolated renal artery of pig. 2. The contractile responses induced by ATP $(5{\times}10^{-3}M)$ were not blocked by pretreatment with cholinergic receptor blocker (atropine, $10^{-6}M$), $\alpha$-adrenergic recptor blocker(phentolamine, $10^{-6}M$) or $\beta$-adrenergic receptor blocker (propranolol, $10^{-6}M$), and $H_1$-receptor blocker (pyrilamine, $10^{-6}M$) or $H_2$-receptor blocker (cimetidine, $10^{-6}M$) on the isolated renal artery of pig. 3. The contractile responses induced by ATP $(5{\times}10^{-3}M)$ were not appeared in $Ca^{\sharp}$-free medium. As the concentration of $Ca^{\sharp}$ in $Ca^{\sharp}$-free medium was increased, the contractile responses induced by ATP $(5{\times}10^{-3}M)$ were enhanced but were completely inhibited by pretreatment with $Ca^{\sharp}$-channel blocker, papaverine $(5{\times}10^{-5}M)$ or verapamil $(5{\times}10^{-5}M)$ on the isolated renal artery of pig.
Computed Tomographic Features of Plate-Like Atelectasis in Four Dogs

Four dogs were incidentally diagnosed as plate-like atelectasis (PLA) by thoracic radiographs. The dogs underwent thoracic computed tomography (CT) examination with various causes. On the lateral radiographs, PLA lesions were observed as a single linear or curvilinear radiopaque area in all four dogs. Although PLA lesions were observed linear structures on dorsal and sagittal reformatted CT images as in the radiographs, it appeared pulmonary opacification or band shape on transverse images. Therefore, care should be taken to differentiate PLA from other pulmonary diseases.
Clinicopathological features of colorectal polyps in 2002 and 2012

Background/Aims: There are few comparative studies on the historical changes in the clinicopathologic characteristics of colorectal polyps in Korea. This retrospective study compared the clinicopathologic characteristics of colorectal polyps treated at our institution in 2002 and 2012. Methods: The medical records of 1,816 patients who underwent colonoscopy and were found to have colorectal polyps in 2002 (n = 597) or 2012 (n = 1,219) were reviewed retrospectively. Patient characteristics and polyp sizes, gross morphologies, locations, and pathologic results were analyzed and compared. Results: Mean age was older in the 2002 group than in the 2012 group (67.3 ± 11.1 years vs. 55.4 ± 10.8 years, p < 0.001). The 1,816 study subjects had a total of 3,723 colorectal polyps, with a mean of 2.05 polyps per patient. Mean polyp size was larger in the 2002 group than in the 2012 group (0.6 ± 0.4 cm vs. 0.4 ± 0.3 cm, p < 0.001). The most common histology was tubular adenoma and they were more common in the right colon in both study groups. Although the distribution of total adenoma was not significantly different between groups, the location of advanced adenoma differed significantly and was more common in the right colon in the 2012 group (30.4% vs. 63.2%, p = 0.01). Conclusions: No significant change in total polyps and adenoma distribution was found between 2002 and 2012. However, advanced adenoma was more common in the right colon in 2012, which cautiously suggests a locational shift from the left to right colon. These findings indicate that right colon polyps require more attention.
