The Ultra Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) pathfinder is a payload system on-board the Russian satellite Lomonosov, scheduled to be launched in 2013. The main purpose of the UFFO pathfinder is to observe the early photons from Gamma-Ray Bursts. It consists of two instruments. The first instrument is the UFFO Burst Alert X-ray Trigger telescope (UBAT) for the fast-trigger and detection of GRB location, and the second is the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) for the observation of the UV/optical afterglow from the GRB located by the UBAT. It will provide the first-ever systematic study of UV/optical emission far earlier than 1 sec after trigger. We will present the design, fabrication and the preliminary performance of the UBAT.
Test of Langmuir Probes Developed for the CubeSat LINK

We develop Langmuir probes with different gains to measure the electron density in the lower ionosphere and thermosphere at altitudes of 200 − 380 km on board a CubeSat. These probes sweep over a wide range of voltage, but the data are acquired mostly in the electron saturation region, from which the electron density is calculated. The frequency of the voltage sweep is set at a high level (10 Hz) to reduce the effect of probe contamination. The probes are tested and calibrated in a laboratory chamber that simulates plasma densities similar to those of the lower ionosphere. We report here the measurement principles, system architecture, and test results.

Electron energy fluxes in the Earth’s outer radiation belt are estimated using an inverse theory of the Tikhonov regularization based upon observations in geostationary orbits. Particle Detector (PD) experiment aboard a geostationary satellite GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK2A) at a geographic longitude of 128.2◦E provided observations of electrons within a 150–2,400 keV energy range with an unprecedented energy resolution of ΔE/E in the range of 5–25%. Instrument response functions, calculated with Monte-Carlo simulations, are deconvoluted with electron observations. Using regularization parameters determined from Generalized Cross Validation (GCV), the Tikhonov method was applied to observations made during a geomagnetically quiet period. This Tikhonov regularization method, now possible for observations in the Earth’s radiation belt for the first time, allows direct inference of electron fluxes without resorting to predetermined functional forms. Comparisons of our results with those from conventional methods indicate differences among the results as large as ~200%.
