The Self-piercing riveting(SPR) is a sheet joining method that can be used for materials which are difficult or unsuitable to weld, such as aluminum alloy and different steel sheet metals. [1] Self-piercing rivet directly pierces into the sheets without drilling the sheets beforehand unlike the conventional rivets. However, conventional self-piercing rivet occurs bulking when piercing the high strength steel. Therefore when new SPR with helix is developed, SPR will be able to drill a hole in the high strength steel. In this paper, self-piercing rivet were designed for three joining conditions with dissimilar sheet metals and various strengths of sheets were considered. SPR was simulated by using commercial FEM code DEFORM-3D. The simulated results were confirmed by experimental trials with the same condition.

In this paper, the development of the simulation system deciding the coiled shape of coil spring from design shape is discussed. The developed system is based on the iterative nonlinear finite element analysis for the hot setting and cold setting process. the developed program calculated the reverse setting value from the comparison between design and set shape after the each analysis and apply those on the coiled formed shape of spring as the initial shape of next iteration of analysis. Self-piercing rivet is sheet joining method. It is being used more to join aluminum sheets. SPR(Self-piercing rivet) is joining method that does pierce sheet and joining it at once. It is benefit to joining limited types of materials such as automobile body combination. Unlike conventional SPR, SPR with helical ribs combined with pierced sheets by rotating. Therefore, the SPR with helical ribs can be predicted for high joining strength and shearing strength than existing rivet. In this study, the forging process was designed for manufacturing self-piercing rivet. Forging process has been simulated by using commercial FEM code DEFORM-3D. The suitable forging process could be designed by comparisons of simulation results. The simulated results for forging process were confirmed by experimental trials with the same condition.
